How come I can't see the picture? I bet I seen it before fishing in Oneida Lake. Jaws are tough, look like a bull head with more dorsel fin? Snake like?

Had a heck of a time getting hook out of jaw?

thanks guys i appreciate it. yea when i got to the tip up the spool was moving real slow so i took it out and set the hook. then i just kinda sat there and enjoyed the show. as soon as i set it the line ripped out of my hand and i just watched the spool race. i knew right away that we had something differrent because we cought about 20 pike yesterday and a couplle outher species ;) and nothing took line like that. when i got it out of the holes i ended up breaking the hook off in its mouth trying to get it out. didnt want to hurt it but after seeing how hard that mouth was im sure its fine.

I'm supprised you only got one they often traval in pairs and you get two at a time.  they can be a lot of fun my bro got one nite fishing black lake once that must have been 15 pounds what a monster.  I have fished for them on purpose before they eat anything a pike will plus anything a bass will.  I usually get them shallow especially as the water warms up they get way in the back of bays  I love catching them theyll snap at you if your not careful I have broken a lot of hooks with them to.

everyone is right with the bowfin ID. we eletroshocked one of them back when i majored in fishery biology at SUNY brockport. it was in sandy creek in Hamlin. they like the weedy areas like bass and pike and feed just like them. you can see in the pic the bowfin's gular plate is sticking out. it is a hard plate right below its lower jaw

I really hope you didn't kill these prehistoric (and amazing) fish just because they eat your precious over-populated bass and panfish eggs (not to mention that they probably eat whole bass and panfish)...

Burbot (Lota lota), also called Ling, Cusk, etc, are a different species than the Bowfin.  This one is a bowfin.

They are, and cusk are an atlantic ocean fish, but burbot are called all sorts of common names by fishermen.  I'm not sure if bowfin have many common names.  That is why biologists must use scientific names instead...

The fish in the picture is not a ling its a bowfin.  The bowfin has bigger scales, bigger teeth and is uglier than a ling.  The ling is a freswater member of the cod family also called a burbot.  The bowfin is an ugly,  prehistoric looking fish and they are not fit to eat whereas the ling can be cooked up and has been called the poor man's lobster.

sorry for keeping this post going, but it is a bowfin. the best way to ID them is a gular plate (like i mentioned earlier) which is easier to see in person. also, look at the anal fins. you'll see

nope thats a burbit  ! plain and simple  , you can't see it's gular plate in the picture  but it clearly does not have a eye spot   just before it's tail !  i suggest you look at the two web sites i posted ! the trouble with  iding these fish is we do it by what we learned locally  ,thus all the different names for the very same fish.

Burbot/Ling are actually much different than a Bowfin.  Burbot are more slender, almost eelike, and have a head similar to a catfish with "whiskers". Bowfin tend to be a little beefier. This fish is lacking the spot on it's caudal fin simply because it's a female.  They put up a really great fight.  Many people around here fish for them with live minnows and cutbait during open water fishing.  It's not uncommon to catch them throught the ice.  Nice fish!

There are many credible websites out there for identifying fish.  If you go to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) they have alot of informative information on some of the more popular species of fish, as well as detailed images, making it simple for anglers to identify fish.

Check out this link.  You can clearly see the difference between the Burbot and the Bowfin! Tight lines...

That is wrong, it is a bowfin.  Plain and simple.  Look at the fins.  The ventral, anal and caudal fins are distinctive of a bowfin.  Burbot will have a much longer, more eel-like posterior and the anal/ventral fin is much longer.  This bowfin is very robust toward the tail and has a very short anal fin.  The pelvic fins give it away as well.  The absence of the spot is not enough to rule out a bowfin, because sometimes colorations vary and the spot could be difficult to make out if it is there.

And to those of you who think they are junk fish, they are not.  They pre-date most fish on the evolutionary scale, much like sturgeon.  They are a top predator, and should be treated with respect (not thrown on the ice and left there).  Burbot are also not trash fish, and, as part of the cod family, many people love to eat them and even target them.

dont worry i released it. i would never leave a fish on the ice unless i was going to be keeping it. i may be totally wrong and might have got some bad info but, i noticed that every fish i cought was very light in color. a gentlman on the ice told me it was because lake champlain has a clay bottom. maybe this is why some people cant see this black spot by the tail. im just sayin i reall y have no clue.

That's what you want to do, kill it.  All because of your ingorance.  Why would you kill anything for no reason?  "They eat bass" is NOT a good reason.  If you don't want to eat it, put it back.

I'm going to chime in again because I am a biologist and thats what i do this is a bowfin also known as a dogfish.  ling is a name many use but only because they are not fully familiar with it ling is more appropreat for the burbot any one who fishes onieda can tell you about them.  The spot is missing because of the sex and age of the fish.  the spot can come and go with time.  For reference we actually sell this fish preserved and for special orders as a skeleton pm me if your interested.  More important to note this is the fish that occupies the nich that the northern snakehead will most likely try to move into.  The bowfin will provide the most direct competion for food and resources.  there established presence is the most likely thing to limit the populations of snakeheads.  However the bowfin is a fairly slow growing and long living fish where as the snake head grows much more quickly because of that if bowfin are removed it opens up the door for snakeheads to occupy.  Please release them as they are the resident and there continued presence poses no real threat for the fish currently in presence as they have been there longer than we have snakeheads however would have an unpredictable effect on current populations.  Also I love catching these things they are big and mean and toothy and that spells perfect sport fish to me.

Just because you can spout a scientific name and a bunch of (misspelled) words does not make your fish ID correct.  The fish in the pictures is a bowfin.  I have an education and work experience in fisheries, and that includes fish identification.

To IFISHY:  well said.

again i suggest you look at the  web sites i posted!  thats a burbit!  sorry i don't care who you are or what you do , now  lets also state  that no biologist would  make a statement without examining the fish and not  just a photo , reason i make  my statements is simple  one can not clearly see the fins to count the rays this leaves  one thing to look for  the spot found  by the tail whisch is not found on that fish ...(The most distinctive characteristic of the bowfin is its very long dorsal fin consisting of 145 to 250 rays, and running from mid-back to the base of the tail. The caudal fin is a single lobe, though heterocercal[1]. They can grow up to 109 centimetres (43 in) in length, and weigh 9.75 kilograms (21.5 lb).[2] Other noticeable features are the black "eye spot" usually found high on the caudal peduncle) like i said you all have computors  try using google ...... thats a burbit!!!!!
Title: Re: OK LETS TRY THIS AGAIN. SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THIS FISH IS

Actually, a bowfin does not need to be looked at that closely to distinguish it from a burbot (that is the correct spelling of burbot, by the way).  I have used fin ray counts and specimen dissection to identify many fish, but it is not necessary in this case.  It would be like counting the fin rays on a bluegill to make sure it isn't a brook trout.

Bowfin would be more commonly misidentified as a Northern snakehead by the general fishing population, but it is not one of those either.

If you don't want to listen, fine.  But it is your loss in not correcting your fish ID rather than mine.  Your spouting of wikipedia's references doesn't mean much except that you know how to read.  Knowing how to interpret the words though, and apply it to fish identification, that is a different story.

do you see  a black eye  by the tail???? are your  telling me  bowfins  don't have them?????

it's real easy!!!!  and i'll show you the differance  between a  sunfish and a brook trout next week

i am surprized at how many biologist  jump out of the woodwork everytime this is  brought up! my

Post by: IFISHY on Jan 25, 2010, 06:29 PM
the black eye spot is a characteristic of the bowfin yes however it is not present on all bowfin and therefore cannot be used as a sole identifiying mark.  burbots never have the spot bowfins sometimes have the spot. so spot means bowfin no spot means nothing.

I don't think you understand the point here.  Not having a prominent black spot does not make the fish a burbot.  You are basing your fish ID on one part of the color pattern, which is a leading mistake of most rookie fish identifications.  They can have the black spot, at least at times, but not every fish will have one at all times.

I'll switch it up a bit...here is what makes this fish NOT a burbot even at a quick glance:

1)  A short anal fin.  Burbot have a long, narrow anal fin which is about as long as the dorsal fin.

2)  Ventral fins set back in the mid-section of the body.  Burbot have ventral fins right under the throat area, even farther forward than the pectoral fins.

3)  A robust body shape.  Burbot have a very slender body when compared with this fish, especially in the tail region.

4)  Large scales.  Every burbot I have encountered in my work has had very tiny scales that are embedded, with the appearance of having skin like a bullhead.

Still, neither of those species is a trash fish.

Dude, it's a Bowfin (Amia calva)

Burbot (according to Cornell):
http://pond.dnr.cornell.edu/nyfish/Gadidae/gadidae.html (http://pond.dnr.cornell.edu/nyfish/Gadidae/gadidae.html)

Bowfin (according to Cornell):

Looks like you may have to contact the biologists at Cornell University and tell them that they are wrong, that they have them backwards!!! :roflmao:

the difference

If I catch a redfish and it has no spot, does that mean it isn't a redfish?

again  a misinformed  person ,bowfin belong to a family called Amiiformes! which also include  gar and sturgon! again the picture the person wishes  idenified is  a burbit!  the scale and  skin ling again is locale names give , which are  great  if you are  talking to someone from that ares however  that is not there names elsewhere.and  a majorty  does not make  anything right... i use  our presant political arena  as a example
its spelled burbot and ths fish is a bowfin and they are not in the same family as a gar or sturgon if you are going to post arogance get your facts strait sturgon dont even have bones they are in their own classification with a cartilage skeleton. if you are going to attempt to insult know what you are talking about.
bowfin- family= Ammiidae its ancesstor were around 130 million years ago it is the last in its family
gar-family =Lepisosteidae there are seven species in north america they are considerd the living fossel since virtually all their relitives are extinct.
sturgon-family=Acipenseridae along with paddle fish thei skeleton consists largely cartilaginous . considered living relics they are the earlyest typs of bony fishes
and the two referanc names i put were to diferenciate the two hence scale and skin.
if you read you would understand what i was saying.  before you post and try to make someone look ignorant learn how to spell BURBOT not BURBIT and get your facts strait! again another misinformed toolshed biologist showing that someone should read up before they look like a A$$

Bowfin

he didn't photoshop the image on the bottom... one has a spot because it is a male bowfin.  The other has no spot because it is a female bowfin.  Just go to any reputable, credible source and type in Bowfin.  It will state that.  Some may not because it is common knowledge.  If you go onto Encyclopedia Britannica, one of the most well-known and most credible sources in the world on all topics, it states this information.

It was pretty fun though, posting something and seeing others posting something to counter what you said, just to see what your next response would be... guess that explains why you have a picture of an Atlantic Salmon as your avatar... if it was me I would have a picture of a Rainbow Trout...

he didn't photoshop the image on the bottom... one has a spot because it is a male bowfin.  The other has no spot because it is a female bowfin.  Just go to any reputable, credible source and type in Bowfin.  It will state that.  Some may not because it is common knowledge.  If you go onto Encyclopedia Britannica, one of the most well-known and most credible sources in the world on all topics, it states this information.
i was being sarcastic   ;D

funny you mention that  there is now some scientfic evidance that support  this!  recent studies  by the utt (uneversity of trapper technoligy)has shown that natural cross breeding between some catfish spieces (brown bullhead) and  eels  did in fact occure! recent fossil records also support these findings and a  on going study at tax payers  expense  is now in processes ....  further more these natural hybrid  can in fact reproduce... the correct  term and  spelling is hybreds...they make a off spring that is  very close looking to a  bowfin but in fact it is  a  b u r b i t ....please do not confuse oneself with a  burbot as  this is a different fish also.... in closing i feel i should be given a government grand  to further my studies of fish in gereral thank you for  your support....p.s. please do not attempt tp correct  my grammer  nor spelling as   i am a doctor in fisholigy and  have a phd in bullcrapoligy...

You need to roll your tongue in the middle of the word for the pronunciation to be correct.  Serious.

Thanks for making me laugh while reading this thread I hurt like hell from a hernia and every time I laugh it bulges out of my gut BWahahahaha this is awesome. Oh by the way it is no way a Burbot or ling or whatever name you want to call it. I was scuba diving lake erie off cattaruagus creek back in the mid 80's and came across a monster burbot 28 inches long in some rocks my buddy told me I just about ran across the water trying to get out of the lake, LOL but i went back and got the thing in a net and put it in my kids pool till the DEC game warden came and looked at it. It was a 28 inch Burbot, lingcod, eelpout all names for it and the fish in this thread is not a burbot for sure. PEACE  ;D
