The bottom picture is a tip down.  The auger is a spoon auger and one heck of a workout.  By the picture it looks old but in great shape.

I bought my spoon auger about 30 years ago.I believe they are  Sweden made.If that dude is sharp it probably cuts better then any other auger but dull or out of whack its no good for nothing.

My first "auger" was a Homelite chain saw.
2nd auger was an ice spoon like the one you are showing.
When it was new (and sharp) it was way better than a chainsaw... much quieter too !

I still have the spoon, but missing the handle for ours. Remember Dad buying it at the local general store when I was 5. Wow almost 43 years ago. I still have his old fishcrafter tip ups he bought around the same time. They need new flag rods and flags but work like new. My uncle had tip downs like those for perch, using small minnows and getting into a big school can be a blast.
My uncle used a large stone like the ones for scythe to sharpen. He was pretty good from what I remember.

I bought a spoon auger a couple years ago, hung it on the wall for conversation.

Back in the 70's Mora's were out but I watched a few nimrods with spoons.  Most were worthless. Once in awhile though you'd see some guy fly thru the ice with one.

I have some wall hanger hand augers from lawn sales. Never used any of them but, thought about it when gas was heading towards 5.00$ per gallon >:(
