Silly Question . . . "Shorty" Ice Chisel
« on: Feb 27, 2024, 12:32 PM »
A friend recently gave me a 2.5 foot long Mille de Lacs ice chisel as a present.

I hate to look a gift horse in the mouth, but I have to ask - - What is the "point" of a shorty chisel?

I would have thought the body mechanics involved would make it difficult to use a 2.5 foot rather than 5 foot long chisel.

But there presumably must be some advantage/use to the "shorty" or they would not make/sell them, right?

I had one and my kiddos used it.  As stated above use it to re-open old holes.  If you let youngsters use it expect it to be at the bottom of the lake sooner or later even with lanyard.  I was gifted a shorty eskimo by someone before and thought it was a joke about well...nevermind about that for today.
If only God would come down in the form of a man and explain everything to us.

Thanks, guys!

That makes sense - - I guess I was just "overthinking" it.

I use a XL craftsman pry bar as a spud because it's lighter and fits in my sled better than a regular spud, I have a regular one to.

I have 2. One for checking ice and one for opening old or frozen holes.
They're both long enough to use while standing though. My ultra light hole opener is only a bit over 2lbs and cuts like butter.
Made from a 2½" wood chisel welded to a 5' pipe.
