Are you fishing so deep that you may not be able to see if they are trout or not, or using a flasher to detect the fish? I'm only implying that if on a flasher or out of view, if could be another species of fish. Sometimes it takes a lot of jigging with a flashy lure to draw them in, but when they arrive it's not what they want. Where I fish, once the fish shows up, no jigging or very subtle jigging will
get the best results. This may be why you had more success on the tip-ups. Changing colors is good, but change lures also. If you catch a keeper, check its stomach contents. Depending on the last
time it ate, you may be able to tell what its last meal was. Try to match what they are eating. If you can use a live fathead, just use that. Are you fishing drop-offs,inlets,weed beds, etc.?

Try using something different now and then. Whether it's a rattle spoon, tube jig or pimple let it dance and then set foe a couple of seconds. You can predict the lake trout, when they come after it reel fast, they are aggressive and will chase after it....BANG/WHAMO! you got them.
