Splake on a tip up
« on: Feb 06, 2010, 07:51 PM »
Looking for some tips for catching splake on a tip up. Caught a 13" and 16" this morning about 30 minutes after we set up, then nothing for the rest of the day. Maybe using to large a bait (about 4 inch walleye shiner)? Thanks

Splake are nomadic, meaning they move a lot

After the sun comes up, the bite will generally slack off (like all trout)

Keep moving, using a camera will help find fish if the water is clear enough.

I wouldn't worry about the size of your bait.  If they want it, they'll get it.

Try some Rosie Reds,  It's a little different and may be the "magic" bait for a day.

I have a question. I want to put some tip-ups out the next time I go bluegill fishing on a lake that I know has splake. It's your your typical Michigan trout lake with a lake bowl with steep drop offs down to around 35 ft. Would you stay shallow and suspend a minnow under the ice of go deeper. Thanks for any help.

good luck man.  Ill be fishing a lake that holds splake in the morning.  Since live minnows are not allowed there, i plan on jigging with a pimple or buckshot spoon on the jig rod and using a night crawler on the tip up.  If i get any ill post a pic..Tight Lines Chris
