have had good luck on bigger gold jigging rapala.  seems like bigger flashy colors are working well in shallower water this year. nothing much has been coming out deep

I was wondering if anyone could tell me how the ice is on Carmi, and how the fishing has been?  I am planning a trip for this weekend or next up there.  Is the access to the lake easy to find?  Is a 4wheeler necessary? Any advice for catching a walleye?
Thanks!

Walleye bite has been very slow there this year, it got a ton pf pressure this spring and it seems to have really taken a toll of the Walleye.  The Perch have been good but have seem to have come to a screeching halt as of this weekend.  Folks have been driving trucks all over it for a week or so.

Thanks guys.  There will be 3 of us going with our limit of tipups and jigging poles.  if we combine for one walleye we will be stoked  ;D Where is the best access?

There are (2) accesses on Carmi.  One in the state park which is off Rte. 236 on the southeast side of the lake; the other is on Rte. 120 on the north end of the lake.

Thanks!  Either one preferable?  Closer to best fishing, or safer?  I know the lake isn't huge, but is a 4 wheeler recommended?

Both are fine. The one in the state park has a nicer parking lot  if you plan to leave a vehicle. The other parking ais next to the road.

There's 15" +/- of ice on Carmi......I drove my truck out last weekend.  Couple pressure cracks to watch out for......but they aren't hard to spot we don't have much snow up here.

Thanks Guys.  I will not be driving the truck on the ice if there are dangerous spots, not worth the risk!  Do the walleye bite better at a particular time?  Is it worth it to get there before sun-up? Any special live bait regulations?
Is there a bait shop close by?

I've always had better luck with the night bite. But we have been able to get a few while pike fishing during the day.I've never done that well in the early AM.,unless I'm in my boat.If you have a wheeler, you might want to bring it.It can get you to alot of places out there you just wouldn't want to walk to.
