Truck through at Willoughby
« on: Jan 30, 2011, 01:11 PM »
Just watched a truck sink to the bottom of willoughby! Most uncool scary thing I have seen. Guy made it out but just barely.

It was pretty bad, got a pic of the top of the truck dissapearing into the water.  Fishing was slow, caught a few little lakers but kinda lost interest after the truck going through.

Not at all surprised, I was there yesterday and the ice was only good for walking, and there were trucks all over, unbelievable. I steered clear of large vehicles and heard a guy mention to people at the landing about the sketchy ice where this happened. The sad thing is exactly 0 people needed to be driving anywhere as the fishin was all done within 500 yards of the landing. I really don't get it...

No not mine, my truck was on solid ground.  Me and MHC were fishing about 500 yards away and heard the ice crack, by the time we loooked over the guys were out of the truck and I just snapped a pic as the thing sunk.  Will post pics tommorow.

Just got back.  Walked on from the north end and fished the north west shore.  Could see a vehicle with a yellow strobe light going at the access,  thought it was tow truck pulling somebody off that got stuck driving on.  And he probably was as a truck through the ice 200 yards from the access isn't getting winched out from shore.  200 yards from the access can get you to 100 fow too real easy.  Lake gets deep quick. Glad the dude is ok.

Boy it happens every year and I still don't get it.  Why risk your vehicle for a chance to get skunked?  I do drive on in some areas but not until everone else has been driving on for a week or two.

I have no problem driving on, but my stipulations are
1)Dont be the first to drive out!
2) If you stay on the plowed road on the ice, I'm Guessing you will be okay
and 3) Don't be a wanderer, Stay in someone elses tracks!

Just like today, we had never fished holiday harbor and if we hadn't talked to anyone, we would not have known about the spring their and the soft ice! do your homework people and don't let tired legs influence your decision on safe driving
Tight lines everyone!

I fished out there saturday there were people driving all around the access and one guy drive way out to the middle till someone started yelling at him. there's only 4" of crap ice and 3"-4" of solid ice. On a good note I did watch a guy catch a 15lb laker and a 5lb salmon. Our group of 4 caught a real nice 24" rainbow about 4lbs and a 22" lake trout about 3-4lbs.

I just read a article this morning, on the WCAX website.  The Truck is sitting in 75 Feet of water.  State Police are looking for the owner!  You get fined for everyday, that Vehicle is sitting in the water.  Lake Willoughby takes along time to freeze over, during the winter.

Yeah does anyone know the protocol for that?  I heard they have 2 days then its 1200 dollars a day plus cutting a trench from shore, hiring a diver and something to pull it out, and a regular fine and some sort of environmental fine, not to mention the loss of the truck and everything in it.
