Lake George is way too commercial for my taste, and besides being good for lake trout, I have no other use for it. If you are a forager then you are a survivor, not someone to be ridiculed. My foraging does not include ginseng, but gathering spring ramps, summer berries of all kinds, and fall mushrooms makes me a man of all seasons. Mushroom hunting and ice fishing are the only 2 things I have ever been skunked on in a day.

Happy foraging mdougla

If he spent as much time fishing as he does Foraging for Bigfoot droppings we’d all be better off.
If you need me, I’ll be ripping Crappie lips on Brant Lake.

There are as many inches of ice thickness as there are trophy pike left in the whole bay. 7-10

I haven't been out there personally but my friends have been driving four wheelers out there for weeks. Avoid the areas around the bridge and the railroad trestle and you should be fine.

or

Hey everyone. Heading up this weekend with some friends to go hiking the high peaks. I want to get on the ice for atleast a day or two though. Anywhere I can find perch? We are staying close to willboro bay. Does anyone ever fish that area? If not about how deep do you need to get to to fish perch on South Bay? Thanks for the help everyone

Willsboro Bay is a good place to look for perch...easy access via the state boat launch.  But I hear the ice is questionable.  A better bet would be the Port Henry area.  The perch bite has been good.

I was on South Bay today and I started drilling a hole with my Mora and it seemed weird, no ice shavings or even that loud grinding noise. Instead the " ice " was very soft and the auger went through it like it was hard butter. About 10 inches thick.

Shortly after making the hole, I fell through while walking a few feet away to get my Jet sled. The water was not cold, or even cool, as it measured 78 degrees Farneheit on my portable thermometer, just like taking a dip in the lake in August.

With the water that warm, I did not panic at all and took my sweet time getting out and back to my car. I brought a chunk of the " ice " with me and had it analyze at the State Police forensic lab in Albany - they told me it was PARRAFIN WAX ! How it got into Lake Champlain is anybody's guess. Hairybagpipes do you know  :-\

To many city people on here ( Kingston and South with city included) ice is safe down there you can catch great perch down that way.
