I USE ABOUT A 10' LEADER OF 20LB FLUOROCARBON TYED TO  A BARREL SWIVEL TYED TO THE BRAIDED TIPUP LINE. I USE A #8 TREBLE HOOK AND A SMALL SINKER. FOR BAIT I LIKE MED TO HEAVY SHINERS, BUT I PREFER MED TO LARGE SUCKERS WHEN I CAN GET THEM

braided line, 10' of 6lb fluro leader, sinkers, med shiner - single hook through the back, treble through the tail. If I'm doing c&r, then I forgo the treble. Incidentally, this is the same set-up that I use for mudpuppies...  :)

I like a 5'+ leader of 17lb flouro. I started using VMC SureSet(?) hooks, they are trebles with one larger hook, good for using on different sized baits without changing hook. Also allows you to put a larger bait on a smaller hook.

Leave the tipups home and jig em ....  ;D

If you are gonna use the tipups then you need to cover the water column from bottom to mid depths ....  have a bait or 2 just off bottom, one up 10 feet and the other 2 spread out at varying depths.

I prefer suckers to shiners and use a small treble (#10).

But  ....  you'll catch 10 on the jig for every one on the tipup.
Goin' where the wind don't blow so strange,
Maybe off on some high cold mountain chain.
