Title: Testing phase
Post by: Bignass56 on Jan 06, 2019, 07:39 PM
Always wanted a way to tell if the fish is running from a distance on heritage tip up. Was bored at work and borrowed a few things. Every revolution of the spool the metal screw will trigger the proximity sensor and trigger the red led that i wired into my old head lamp battery pack.

Great idea! It will be interesting to see how the sensor functions under water. Keep us updated.

Neat idea! Any other components or does the prox sensor act as a simple switch for the LED?

I took my power supply from my broken head lamp which uses 3 triple A batteries and took it apart added the +/- leads for the prox sensor. Every time a metal object comes within 4mm it will switch on. Added the small red led light and soldered it all together with the led circuit board. Just need to field test  and see if this was huge waste of time.  ::)

That’s clever as hell.
Hope it works but even if it doesn’t, def not a waste of time.

Very slick! Prox sensor on Amazon is around $8. I'm runnin' rail style Polars so I'll have to think about position. Probably could be above water and trigger on the crosspiece.

Thinking...

Out of water would best.. these sensors from my work are designed to with stand the elements but not sure how long this will last.. hopefully we get some ice locally soon

That is truly awesome.  All the fun of a polar traps T spinning, in light form, on a laker.  Sign me up..I am sold...

This is obv a crude setup i made to do a little R&D. Iv already looked into price point and if it makes sense to possibly build and install these with simplicity. If everything works out i might make a few of these light setups who knows. Just sucks sprinting across the ice to ur furthest flag and nothing there lol

Dude!!! that is wicked sweet! does it add significant weight and does it make the trap cumbersome/ top heavy?

If someone would want to buy a couple of those from you, how much would you charge? I'm not very good with electrical components.

Ill try to make a set in next few weeks maybe give a few to some dudes that fish alot more than me to put them thru some rigorous testing.  I tested the original design lastnight 8 hours in a 5 gallon bucket overnight and the light worked after 8 hours submerged. Ill order all the stuff tonight and make a few to see where it goes.

Pretty awesome! I wonder how hard it would be to incorporate Bluetooth to send alerts to your phone with speed and distance estimates. Heck we wouldn't even need flags anymore!

Nope, but I would expect a ticket in some states.  I can see where guys would sit in there cottage or house waiting for a buzz on their phone.  I've heard of guys getting tickets for watching tip-ups, out of their cottage window and running out for flags.  Don't know the outcome of them though.  One can argue that they were in a place where they could observe them.  However, you could also argue they weren't in the immediate area!  That's one of those judgement calls on the part of the CO!  And, most of us know how that goes in court!
If I was to get caught in mass doing this than just give me the ticket I deserve it lol. I'll also go and play all my lucky numbers too because I just beat a much harder odds.

Got all the parts in and i redesigned everything to run inside the sealed copper tubing to match the the trip mechanism. More pics to come
