How come I can't see the picture? I bet I seen it before fishing in Oneida Lake. Jaws are tough, look like a bull head with more dorsel fin? Snake like?

Had a heck of a time getting hook out of jaw?

thanks guys i appreciate it. yea when i got to the tip up the spool was moving real slow so i took it out and set the hook. then i just kinda sat there and enjoyed the show. as soon as i set it the line ripped out of my hand and i just watched the spool race. i knew right away that we had something differrent because we cought about 20 pike yesterday and a couplle outher species ;) and nothing took line like that. when i got it out of the holes i ended up breaking the hook off in its mouth trying to get it out. didnt want to hurt it but after seeing how hard that mouth was im sure its fine.

  • who cares if it rains the fish are already wet
I'm supprised you only got one they often traval in pairs and you get two at a time.  they can be a lot of fun my bro got one nite fishing black lake once that must have been 15 pounds what a monster.  I have fished for them on purpose before they eat anything a pike will plus anything a bass will.  I usually get them shallow especially as the water warms up they get way in the back of bays  I love catching them theyll snap at you if your not careful I have broken a lot of hooks with them to.
get the kids fishing its more fun that way

Thanks for fixing the pictures. Yes that is what I caught in Oneida.. Strong fix pulled like heck. Got it in the boat and it gave me a lot of trouble getting the hook out.

Appreciate it,
Bob

everyone is right with the bowfin ID. we eletroshocked one of them back when i majored in fishery biology at SUNY brockport. it was in sandy creek in Hamlin. they like the weedy areas like bass and pike and feed just like them. you can see in the pic the bowfin's gular plate is sticking out. it is a hard plate right below its lower jaw

I really hope you didn't kill these prehistoric (and amazing) fish just because they eat your precious over-populated bass and panfish eggs (not to mention that they probably eat whole bass and panfish)...

Burbot (Lota lota), also called Ling, Cusk, etc, are a different species than the Bowfin.  This one is a bowfin.
