   Many, many years ago, a group of us rented a sleeper shack on Oahe reservoir in South Dakota and we had over two feet of ice under us. It was colder than a witch's mammary gland and it cracked and boomed all the time we were there. As many have said on this thread, I'd love to hear that sound again, SOON! :icefish:

I remember once I would hear the boiing, and cracking running across the ice sitting on my bucket.  I asked my partner if this was normally and should we worry (my heart was racing with fear).  He said the same thing, we are on thick ice and this is the lady of the lake making ice.  I took a deep breath, exhaled, relaxed, and turned around to make a new hole.  There was a 2 inch gap in the ice that wasn't there 5 mins ago.  I wouldn't have soiled my pants if the gap wasn't between me and land....    yikes !!! :o  :o  :o

Yea the ice that season was unreal ... in that second vid with that crack that went through my hole, opened to about 2 1/2" 15 mins later. I bent a pole on my flip over trying to get the heck outa Dodge. Think I set a sprint record on ice for distance traveled in least amount of time ....for my age group ...  @)

here's a question - how do you think a constantly "booming" ice say affects the fishing?

I say it doesn't...and here's my scientific theory ::)

The booming in most lakes goes on throughout the winter whenever it's making ice, right? Ok...so the fish probably get used to it even though it might not have bothered them to begin with. Now...if it did affect them I would say it would be those that are closest to the surface where the booming takes place. And if the fish are deeper, the water above them is probably going to absorb the sound and vibration....the deeper the water, the deeper the fish, the less noise and vibration...so fish deep!

There it is ...are you buying it?  ;D

 I wonder that too. I never put two and two together but I will pay more attention to the bite vs crack thing this year.

   Just a reminder for some of the new fishermen out there...don't cross the pressure ridges(heaves) with your vehicles without a thorough inspection first. Best if someone else has already crossed first. Carry a spud to poke around those kind of places and if you are unsure go around them if possible.

when the ice cracks like that its shifting......ice forms at any temp under 32.....and when ice melts it doesnt melt from the top down its opposite.......it melts from the bottom up.....if there is 4 inches of ice I wouldnt be too worried about going through as long as your out there on foot you will be just fine.....I always take my spud bar with me and slam it in the ice as hard as I can before I even take a step....if the bar goes through the ice obviously its not a place that you want to be but if it doesnt make it through on the first good smack well then I take a couple steps and do it again and again I have been through the ice a couple times and its not really a fun time especially when your a couple miles from home on a wheeler.....be safe out there this year guys............and as far as the ice cracking and the bite being affected I would say no it makes no difference.....I mean the fish hear it year after year around the same time every year as well so i.m.o I dont think it makes any difference at all.....

I had a buddy on the ice for the first time years ago and while we were sitting in my compact flipover a crack went directly under us and bumped us about three inches up off the ice. He jumped up and rang his bell on one of the roof support tubes. Gee, now that I think about it, I took a buddy to a store yesterday and he bought a rod, reel and other ice fishing stuff because he is going with me for his first time shortly. He has never been on the ice because he doesn't it enough to even walk on it.  :whistle:
