I worked with the DNR in Michigan City a few years ago and asked about the ice. The biologist said they get some ice on the harbor there in Michigan City and in other harbors along the shoreline and that people do fish them....With the possible shipping traffic its hard to say what areas might be safe farther away from shore...check the Lake Michigan reports on the DNR webpage or call the DNR office in Michigan City.
