Title: 09' MN Get Together..Second Annual!
Post by: Skipper on Oct 31, 2008, 07:37 PM
We want all Iceshanty.com members to attend this gathering regardless of where they are from or how long they have been a member. Feel free to bring a friend with because Iceshanty.com always welcomes new members. If you don't have transportation on the ice you can "carpool" with a guy with a 4x4. If you lack the current fancy gear, you will fit right in.

Please make sure you have a current fishing licence with you and you understand Minnesota fishing laws. This is not a derby or a contest. No admission fee will be collected by Iceshanty.com. All we expect of you is to come and have a good time. This gathering is not going to be fancy, just a bunch of guys drilling holes and swapping stories.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK guys, here we go again!

I am thinking Saturday, March 14. Mille Lacs Lake.

This year we will get some chow cookin and some fish biting!

Anyone have any input?

People are riding their motorcycles to go vote! Definitely not an average early Nov day. :(

I think we should have ample ice for our get together. ;)

Sounds like fun skipper, my fiance had an idea that we should go on an ice fishin trip instead of getting each other gifts for xmas! Its a real tough decision, since i already put her gift on her finger last week. I have only iced mille once, at dickies, not a good time, but your get together sounds like a good excuse to try it again! Any places that you recomend staying? Thanks ..................Kell y

The Casino and the Econolodge on the west side are good bets if you want a cheaper room. Both have Jacuzzi suites for you and your bride to enjoy. The Casino has good eats and plenty of places to loose your money too.

As this thing gets a little closer, I will call a few resorts and look for some group discounts. Don't count on getting a sleeper fish house, because the resorts have to get them off the lake by the end of February. It would be nice to have this gathering before the houses have to come off, but the weather is way too cold to stand around and b.s. outside. :-\

You move?

working on it..

Taxes wearing you thin? ;D

Everyone is welcome to attend, even those guys from Maine. ;D

It should be as kid friendly as this site. There may be some beer drank, but the Minnesota guys are pretty civilized. We go to fish, share stories, and have a good time. I do not forsee any problems with kids out there. :)

That was tough out there, I forgot my cleats at home. I couldn't even drill holes with Hard Ice's Lazer Mag auger without getting the merry-go-round treatment.

A few days of melt followed by a hard freeze makes for a slippery day on Gull.

That sounds like a good idea. I liked ice fishing on that lake. I did a bachelor party, rented a really nice nine man shack from Izatys. Caught a nice 27" walter that weekend. We also limited out on perch.
I hope to make it.
Its gonna be a cold one this weekend on Boulder.
I love ice.

If I can swing the time I'm in too!  I was bummed that the weather stopped us last year.  I'm still anxiously waiting to pull a Walleye through the ice as it's been about 25 years.

March is about the only time we can count on good ice and temps above zero.

I would really like to attend this event, sounds like a great get together of Minnesota fishermen. We planned a week in Florida this year and unfortunately we fly out Saturday morning March 14. If I have to miss it, Florida is a pretty good trade off though. Maybe next year, I bet you guys will have a blast though and I hope the fishing is the best ever that day! Warmfeet

Any suggestions? We can still move dates, and Mille Lacs is not set in granite either.

The biggest thing is lake access, Mille Lacs has plowed roads. We can leave from a publick if the snow is not to deep on any other lake.

This thread is pretty dang quiet. I am going out and catching football mamma perch with or without most of team MN! ;D

Remember too guys, your fishing licenses do not expire March 1st like in past years. Your 2008 licences are good till 4-30-09. That should save some dough for ya. I always thought it was pretty dumb to have my fishing licence expire a month before the season was over. Fishing licences now cover ice out to last ice, thank you legistlature. ;)

My son and I are committed to being there! Here is a pic of him with our Clam on Mille Lacs January 2007. Brandt's road to Sloppy Joe Flats 8 miles out. Sloppy Joe's is a gravel bar that gave up only perch, no walleye that day. Brandt's  plow driver drilled our holes, as we had no extension on the auger. The ice was too thick!

I just checked the weather. It looks like we are going to have a little warm up, followed by a little cool off. The ice should still be 120% by the end of next week. :)

If any of you guys don't have cleats, I suggest you invest in some! We should have a slick one again this year. I forgot my cleats last year and it sucked!

The Perch bite is really starting to heat up.  It should be in full swing by the IS Gathering.

I fished yesterday with Tony Roach and a few of our other guides and we pounded the perch :D

What is the status of the ice w/ regard to being able to drive on it? That warm weather down here (SE) has played havoc w/ some of the lakes....

Can a truck be driven on/off ok - or should we be bringing a wheeler along?

Thanks

I see some single digits and a -10 this week, that should firm up the top layer pretty good. The ice is still in great shape and safe to drive on up here. If you want to send Paul Waldowski an email, he would know what kind of shape his roads are in better than anyone.

Sun glasses would be a good idea to - could be very bright out there - being snow blinded could make it hard to drive home......

Here is a link to local guide Tony Roach who fishes out of the area we are going to. Looks like 1/16th oz jigging spoons in gold or orange tipped with eurolarva. Tony was finding perch in 26-28' of water, and larger but scattered perch in 29-30' water along the gradual dropoffs, not the steep dropoffs. Driving conditons are good, but watchout for old snowdrifts, and ice heaves. Here is the link to Tony's weekly report posted yesterday.

I'm in. I will be bringing me, myself and I. A buddy and I fished on Banana flats and 5 mile flats last weekend we drove on at Twin Pines on the west. You could drive anywhere with a 4x4 pickup then, thie ice was in great shape, about 30" . We couldn't find the jumbos, just a bunch of little guys. It was a good time though. I'm leaving the wheeler at home. We used red spikes and minnow heads on jigs, I heard gold and silver Kastmasters and buckshot spoons are the ticket for the big guys if you get on them.

Erick,

As of two days ago they still were out deep.

I will be around Saturday a.m. and then will be out fishing.

We plowed our road yesterday for your gathering, so truck travel is still possible.  If guys really want to be mobile, they should be wheelers or sleds.

Tom and I are bringing wheelers. My shack is heavy and I didnt pay five grand for a wheeler to leave it home. ;D

That's it, another one in the can!

I would like to give a special thanks to Mr. Paul Waldowski from Appledoorn's Sunset Bay Resort (http://www.sunsetbayml.com) for hosting us. Paul even took the time to lead us out to the perch grounds by Hennipin Island and gave us a few tips on how to catch them.

I would also like to thank Uncle Grump for bringing lunch and the means to cook it.

Here is Spear Chucker with a nice tulibee..

Here is Tommy with a perch..

What the heck is this? Hard ice thought it was a baby pout. Goby and sculpin were also mentioned. We caught a few of these out of the rocks.

I think we had a good time, and I hope everyone returns next year. The attendance was up over 100% from last year, lets see if we can double it again for next year.

I think next year I should take Friday off of work and scout out some fish (please! anything but miss work for fishing! ;D)

If anyone wants to volunteer help, we can split up and do some seek and destroy, full contact, attention deficit, full tank of gas burnt in the ATV, hardcore fish finding. I move fastest by myself. I can be on and off of a spot in 15min, and done with a piece of structure in an hour or two.

I wouldn't imagine Hard Ice or Tommy would need their arm twisted to help. ;)

That way the rest of you guys can come up and have a better shot at some decent fish, and I have an excuse to take off of work to fish!

Do we want to do Mille Lacs again? I like it because it is in the center of the state so no one has to drive too awful far, and a guy can get into some pretty good schools of perch. Pelican and Gull up by Brainerd are also an option. Gull is top notch, and Pelican makes some nice crappies. Leech, Cass, and Winnibigoshish are a little far for the metro and southern MN guys to make a day out of. I guess there White Bear and Forest Lake near the Metro too, but I know nothing about them at all. The only other "destination" lake I can think of within reasonable drive for everyone is Minnetonka, but again I know nothing about it.

The Milaca Super Slab (Mille Lacs) is still my first choice, especially if I can scout ahead of time. If we gang up on the old girl and do some work, Id bet we would up our chances by quite a bit. :)

Any lake south of Mille Lacs is going to be very different ice conditions come mid March. My son and I were going to fish Minnetonka the next day, it had standing water all over it, just a handfull of people fishing on it. I would like to propose an early ice get together at whatever lake makes sense in December. We can use the ice fishing show in St Paul as a good time to start planning the trip.

Haywood tried to put together an early GTG on West Rush, and no one came. :-\ I think it is a great idea to have a early get together, maybe in mid December on a small lake. I should have my snowmobile done by then (I hope) so someone could borrow my sportsman to toodle around for the day. Plus my snowmobile is a 2 up, so someone could ride girlfriend with me. ;D

I am busy as hell during ice show time, so we may want to steer clear of it a bit. I want to but together a booth next year that will make Ice Team's look like a church garage sale (yeah right!).  ;D That was a good time down there, and I look foreward to doing it again.

I don't think that Ice team has much to worry about! :D We have a 10' by 10', and Mr. Genz has a 100' by 100'! They have new Arctic Cats, Vexilars, Strikemaster, and the ultimate draw, Dave Genz! Somehow they got their booth centrally located and directly across from the Ice Fishing Bikini Team. ;)
