MC and a few other bays were locked.  Not enough to do much unless you got nads the size of Europe.  Weather coming the end of the week isn’t too promising.

I saw a post yesterday that guys have been ice fishing marilla resivor in bradfod they said six inches yesterday. 2 to 3 inches clear ice 3 to4 white ice hard to believe but if temps stay down all this week may have to try Sunday. Long drive from pgh but i gotta get on some ice.

Please be careful Tom . Clear is good , but white ice can be questionable . I certainly wouldn't trust , but that's just me being extra cautious .

I know what ya mean, and thax if ice dont feel safe i dont go out, i like at least 6 inches and with a float suit on i still feel uneasy, what ever happened to the days of 15 to 16 inches on aurthur.     Ppray for ice all and be safe.

Well , what do you guys think of the forecast ? The next 8 days look promising to make ice . If we can fish by the end of the month , we should have a decent 6 weeks if we're lucky . Come ooooon polar vortex !

Drive by on the way over to Sarnese Taxidermy.  The snow was coming down on the way there.  There was still open water between the 528 launch and the Maples which is kind of weird.  Tons of spots that looked wet on the ice   And there was 3 people probably 20 - 30 yards off the bank at church didn’t drive down to see how thick and didn’t have any desire too until after these super cold next two days roll through.  I just hope people use their head and don’t get too antsy. LA doesn’t need to claim another life over a fish.

Off the zion church 2 1/2” at best about 15’ out  .. couple guys walking on that ice like it was 2 ft of ice.  If you went past 30 ft out you were really taking a big risk.  Was raining most of the day and about 4 started to snow pretty heavy.  Lots of ducks and geese could be seen swimming around the maples so watch that area after the snow fall

Fished with chute and couple others. Ice very sketchy. Bouncy around a hole too risky for this fat guy. Give it two days then you might be able to get to some fish without swimming. Be smart

(new to the forum)
I was coming home Friday the 18th from Cranberry and stopped at the launch off of 528. Saw foot prints out about half way. Ice was about 2 inch thick, and that's being generous. Hoping to go out for my first time with a buddy or 2 a week or two from now; waiting for 4-5 inches.

muddy creek has the best chance of early ice due to the influx of cold water from MC. ive been way in the back on 5 inches of ice when it was open every where else, i can only guess but id say you could get on back there and work your way out today.you need to start shallow and work towards the deep where ever you go ??? ??? caveaut :nono: too many variables to say fosure thats what its all about get out there and see

A couple guys from work invited me to go Friday or Saturday to Moraine for a few hours (something about a tournament???) Sunday they talked about going out to yellow creek since its suppose to have 4 inches now, building to more.

Ordered an auger and some extra items last night to get me started. Ice picks were a must!

The tournament at LA is the 27th I believe.  Anyone have any word or seen that open spot that was out to the right of the Maples since the snow and weather? Thinking that may be a dicey area if it got skimmed then the snow stayed on top and it doesn’t build much especially for the tourney coming up and them going out from under the bridge.  Just hate to see someone walk on that spot and go in the drink even though with this weather I’m sure itll be at least 3 by Saturday

Looks like its promising for this weekend.

I have a couple certain nats in my house that tells me not to go fishing this weekend, and I do appreciate their care for my wellbeing, 6 inches of ice is pretty safe. (If only I could get my old man to chase winter walleyes with me instead of him having cabin fever until Lake Erie opens back up for him)

I'm just hoping to have some reports of yellow creek roll in. If not, this weekend might be a bust for me.

It’s the same as always. Check as you go.  Stay to the safe ice, wear picks.  4 inches is reccomended for a reason. Guys fishing 2 1/2 inches of ice are asking for a serious accident to happen.

That's what I keep reiterating. Some people I talked to say 3 inches is good enough for a group,  but I feel otherwise
I think 6-8 is enough for a group. I told the old man that he'll be good with a foot on Erie, but he is still resilient to the idea.

Maybe someday. I try to fish as much as I can with him, even at me being in my twenties. He'll always be my fishin' buddy.

That's good to here. I started ice fishing with my dad at age 4 on Arthur. Hes 67 and I'm 41. Because of work he goes a lot without me now, but I'm rarely out there without him. Lots of guys on here have run into him out there over the years. He still parks at 528 and walks to fish the bells by the prop at least once a season when the ice is good. If anyone doesn't want to head out alone hes always game to go. He just got his 1st cellphone last year ;D

Quite a few people in MC.  Ice about 5-6 but as mentioned closer to the mouth / out from maples it goes from 5 to 2 real quick.  Mt Zion had similar ice to MC.   Nothing but dink’s this AM for me.  An absolute ton of dink perch, quite a few dink crappy, and some dink Gill

Anyone have any luck with tipups today?  We unfortanutly got skunked in the spots we hit.  Bout 10ft deep, fishin near bottom with shiners. Slow bite or rusty angler?

I had good luck jigging in 7ft. Had tipups out with a mix of bait with no luck. It was a really light bite today. Between me and my buddy we caught 22 keepers and a pile of dinks from sunrise to sunset. Good bag for sure but we worked all day for it.

So I was fishing during the tournament today from 10am-2pm at Lake Arthur. I have a basic marcum sonar unit. We were tipping swedish pimples with minnows and using wax worms as well. In 4 hours, all we caught were 5 bluegill. We saw guys at the weigh in with buckets full of massive crappie!!! ... I've only been ice fishing for a few years. What am I doing wrong???! Any tips you guys can give me? I'd just like to go out and catch a few nice crappie.

most of the big bucket o crabbies fish structure, brush piles, downed trees, old foundations, bridge piers, cribs and channels. once you find structure youll see your catch improve.make friends with the shanty crowd they will steer you to structure hope it helps

Thanks Tony . I'll give it my best shot .

Mknott , Wal Mart and other  bait shops have Hot Spot maps of most of our local lakes . They show you where structure has been planted around the lakes . Obviously it doesn't include structure that private parties have placed , but it gives you a good start . Tight lines .

Could make the tourney due to having to take care of some things in the AM but had a pretty good afternoon on the ice.  Bite was consistent with a 30 minute window at dusk where it was on fire.  Had to work them, and they were picky with what they wanted but once I found it it was game on.  In total iced 49 crappies, a pile of gills, and a small LM.  Kept 20 crappies smallest being 11” biggest 16.5”. Everything else after 20 went back into the drink.    Long term forecast isn’t looking too good for the following week hopefully it’s long.

Good afternoon at LA only brought home 8 crappie
Nothing under11 inch! The vex lit up at 5 you had to jig really hard than let it sit and they would take it. Be safe ice isn' equal changes quick 6 inch one spot 2 inch 20 feet away

Perch were full of roe, going to fry it up with some venison tonight. If you have not tried it you are missing out.

So I'm a first timer on the site. I've been reading up alot just trying to figure out how to set up and get on some fish. This is only my second year trying to ice fish and I'm going to give it a try for only the third time ever and would like to be prepared. Last year I fished by the Mt Zion Church in shallower waters. Looking at the map I see that around an island by McDaniels boat launch get really deep. My question is, do both spots produce and am I at least in the right direction. I like the idea of deep water also. Just didn't know if one was better than the other.

Both can produce and be a hit or miss that’s why it’s fishing. What you’re trying to target also depends where you should focus.  Structure is key (weeds, rock, channel, railroad bed, brush, etc)   The church and muddy has more Structure than the deep in my opinion. You can spend along time in the deep abyss and not catch a fish. Don’t be afraid to move around.

Sounds about right. I like to Target bigger fish and was hoping for walleye but am willing to Target anything. I'll explore. It what I like to do anyways. Thanks for the info. Does any know if the ice is safe in the deeper partsof the lake by McDaniels. That may make my decision for me.

Good luck on the walleye. It's mostly a good bass lake with some pike mixed in. If your a jigger, crappie are pretty nice this year. As to your question about the deep,if it was good some guys would be venturing to the wiper spot. lol

I understand your urge to explore the deep water , but my general rule is to never venture beyond 200 yds ( screaming distance ) of a partner or other fishermen . Just from reading most of the SUCCESS posts on here , most fish seem to be caught in less than 10 feet of water on or near structure .

Go north for Walters.  They’re in there but your odds are better at pyme.  Unless you’re in with the few who consistently catch them and they’re tight lipped at that.

I'll, for sure, be going out Saturday. I may go out Sunday, warm weather permitting, as well. I'll be either around the lower 528 launch, old 422 launch, or towards bear run if I can find a spot of weeds. I drive a newer grey Subaru hatchback, so look out for me. If you guys see me, come up and say hi! Hopefully I'll get into the fish this weekend since this may be the last chance of the season. If I do, you guys will be the first to know.

Parked at Zion walked over to MC fished from 8:30-7:00 caught over 50 fish between 3 guys (2 brand new newbies that loved it) and only one flasher. Early bite was gils, mid day was slow, dusk into dark got a hot bite with a few gils and alot of thick slab crappies. Good day overall and I know we will have 2 more guys on the forum and hardwater.

Started the day off at McDaniels in dink city. Nothing but dink gills and a few dink crappies majority of people I talked to experienced the same thing.   Left there and ventured to the south end in the park and got on the X.  Had to work them a little with some being super aggressive but managed a decent bag of 39 crappies 11-16”’, and a bunch of throw backs.  Hopefully this warm spell doesn’t hurt the ice too bad.

Don’t know where this is but if it holds true it defies all that’s know about ice.   A week of 50 degree weather and rain and it’s only lost an inch or two.

The ice is strong at the end of the concrete docks. Getting 5" of ice at MC & old 422

Post by: toocheaptosmoke on Feb 09, 2019, 09:51 AM
Be careful around the creek channel that weaves through MC, I've seen it undercut the ice in really localized spots with runoff water flowing.   Might have 4-5 inches, then all of a sudden be on 2".  :o

Post by: BostonWhaler21 on Feb 09, 2019, 10:54 AM
I checked the ice at old 422, 528, and beer run launches last night at 9. Lots of open water near the shores, but ice looked solid and black out in the main channels. Cant give an ice thickness since I was too sketched to walk out on it in case I hit a rotten spot...

This is probably old news, but I'd figure I'd give out some info from what I saw.

Got out on MC today. Plenty of people out, not a whole lot of fish being caught. I got the big skunk, Gambler caught a few bluegill. Some around us were catching bass on tipups. Ice held up way better than I thought through the warmup. About 6 inches of mostly clear ice. Watched for 1MO, but we saw no smoke signals or any signs of he and his tribe.

422 from Butler . Pass the Fairgrounds , first ramp 528 exit . 2 miles to 528 bridge over lake . Turn right at end of bridge . As you go down the hill to the boat launch , you can make a left and follow the shore line up the Muddy Creek  branch or you can just go out from the boat launch . STAY AWAY from the bridge ! ! ! ! The bridge pillars heat up in the sun and cause thin ice . Very dangerous ! Tight lines to you .

Went out at upper 528 launch area. Caught decent amount of small gills and a couple of crappies mixed in. Very light bite though. 6 inches of dark ice, but a couple pressure cracks that went across the whole lake. Edges were a little sketchy and open water under the bridges. Be careful

Enjoy the weather . We're going down to 11° tonight and a mix of snow& ice in the next 24 hours . We should have good ice when you get home . Watch out for the crazies out on the strip at night . They'll pic your pockets and dump you in an alley . My buddies & I went there in 2005 and rode Harley's to the Grand Canyon and around Arizona . One friend hit for $5,000 and was immediately propositioned by a drag queen !  :woot: :roflmao: :cookoo:

Tournament was held at 528 My Zoin church parking lot. Follow the dead end road to Shannon Run. Go to the other side and find the channel, crappie bite is almost always good a dawn and dusk. I've not fished there in two weeks so be cautious of ice and spud. By looking a the video of the tournament ice looked good, gotta to be better with the colder temps that we had.

Somehow seems like the ice got worse since last Saturday. Way more open water in from the church. Actually a boat in the small open section of water out from the 528 launch.
On muddy creek now. about 5-5.5”., but starting to get soft near the shoreline and some wet looking spots on opposite side of the dirt road which probably are soft too.
If you do go take a spud bar. I also think Sunday and afternoon it’s going to get real soft and either be dangerous or start to open up In the back coves that are still fish able.

Going to take a ride out . If anyone is on the ice this evening , give me a shout . Will be driving a red GMC extended cab with a black brushguard . Should be poking around about 6:15 - 6:30 .

6:10 pm ,  lots of open water from 528 bridge up towards Shannon & Propagation branch . Looks like a couple people up Muddy Creek . Definitely chancy conditions .
