I drove out to Lake Winnipeg today. I was able to walk out about 50 yards, it was like walking on a water bed but the ice (if you can call it that) held. 2 Miles north of where I was, the lake was the same consistency as a slurpee. Lots of frazzle too.

I'm going this afternoon, there was 3-4 inches on a parkland lake I checked yesterday, I should have a more detailed report this evening.

The parkland lake I mentioned and fished this evening is Lake of the Prairies.  Average ice is 4-6" although I did find 3" one spot over the river channel, however where I was it was 6".  Got my limit of walleye, threw one small one back, lost a few, and got one nice burbot.  I left early, could have caught for another half hour till dark but I had my limit and wanted to pack up while there was still some light, and I had a long walk back to the truck.  It was awesome to finally get out there, might go again tomorrow or tuesday.

I should mention that was on the north end of the lake, the south end likely doesn't have that much ice yet, but should in another day or two.

Ice on the lake now, but not safe to walk on yet.  This warm weather isn't going to help.

Try some of the smaller ponds and lakes.

Your short changing yourself if you only fish LW and the RR

I flew out of Winnipeg heading to Toronto this morning and saw all the little ponds and small lakes frozen over. The Assiniboine River is choked with ice at the bends but wide open everywhere else. Westhawk and Falcon are wide open except for some of the shallower bays but the adjacent shallow little lakes are frozen. Same for Shoal lake and Lake of the Woods. This warm spell is not going to help but at least it looks to be short lived.
Won't be long though ;D

In and around Manitoba's capital region with ice fishers the term "The Lake" usually means LW....and "The River" refers to the RR....
