canadice/ hemlock lakes.
« on: Jan 05, 2015, 08:23 AM »
Looking forward to getting out on both of these lakes. Water Temps made it into the 30's. Hopefully they grow some ice this week. Will keep updating post as conditions change.

Colorado Springs-you are a long way from home!!  It's going to be cold enough but they are not forecasting much letup in the winds. I'm holding a good thought for you.

Hemlock has a lid at north ramp as far as I can see south. Open water between north ramp and dam. Ice formed today.

Candice has a lid from ramp, north to dam. Open water as far south as I could see. Lots of ice and slush floating in water. What ice is on is less than 24 hours old.

Did not try to get out on it. Was in work truck with no spud or pfd. Will update tomorrow night with ice thickness.

On canadice! Fishing 14fow. Sketch as sketch gets. Spud, picks, pfd and rope recommended if you want to play. Shore is soft went out a few feet found 3" of not ideal ice.

Tonight's forecast below zero temps and low winds may finally put a cap on Canadice.

It capped last night. Ice is much better at the spot I fished last night. Spud still needed. On 5" now 10' away is less than 2". Ice at ramp was .5"

Tonight had 2" at ramp on canadice.

Headed out off south end of hemlock about 1/3 of the way across the lake, ice thickness varies 3-6 of ice. Ice got pretty hallow sounding the farther I got out.

If anyone could message me with some pointers for crappies on this lake I would greatly appreciate it. Just looking for a starting point.

Howdy, fellow hard water fanatics!

I was out on Hemlock last Sunday afternoon/night, 1/18/15.

I walked out to the new ice past the drop off on the south end and started setting up shop just as it started pouring down rain.

The ice was 4-4.5 inches thick, but super quality.

There were a few other fellas fishing the drop off, I went out a little deeper, onto the new ice.  It was plenty safe.  Really clear, quality ice.

It wasn't long before I started catching smelt on my Swedish Pimple in broad daylight.

After it got dark, the smelt got real friendly.

I only had one flag before dark and none after.  The flag tip up had lost a lot of line, but no fish.  I ended up icing just over forty tasty smelt, though.  So, I went home happy!

I hope to hit the ice again this week!

Have a nice day!

Personally haven't fished for smelt on hemlock but have been doing well on canadice in 15-25 fow on the south end, actively jigging towards the bottom of the column. Would guess it would be the same at hemlock. South ramp, find the drop off and actively jig for smelt.

Good luck.

You can access Canadice Lake anywhere along the east side of the lake from Canadice Lake Rd. There are many spots along the road to pull off and park.

I've never fished for smelt, looks like you just chop off their heads, split them and fry them? are the bones are small enough you just eat them? is there any trick to them?

Using scissors, zip them up anal to throat, clip back of head...then pull head down...everything comes right out.

Fished 4:30am till noon today. Caught 50 smelt and had one dropped flag. Dropped it because it was running so fast the spool backlashed and tangled before I could set the hook. Probably a bass or pickerel. Jigged all over from 3'-30'. Large spoons small jigs. Mousies. Waxies. Spikes. Niagara's etc. Not even a nibble. Moved to south end of canadice with same results. Smelt stopped biting at day break. Plenty of coyotes biting at 5am. I considered busting out the ice picks just in case they smelled my pile of smelt.

Last time I caught a smelt it was in a dip net 20 years ago... this post has gotten me intnerested in perusing them once again.

Couple of quick questions :

What time of day seems to be better.. sundown into dark ? or early before dawn into first light ?

Spend a lot of time on these lakes in a kayak during open water...  What are my chances of using a lantern and jigging them in the spring / summertime ?

Had a very large pickerel check above bait for line today. Damnedest thing I have witnessed in a while.  Caught his little buddy that came in after he left.

In case everyone has not checked, NYS has a health advisory out for lake trout in canadice and hemlock. women under 50, and kids under 15 do not eat.. everyone else 1 meal a month, and nothing over 24in. PCB's are the culprit.

Icerougue, you have posted partially correct information.  The PCB health advisory is on Canadice Lake ONLY for Lakers and Browns.  Hemlock Lake is general statewide advisory of 4 meals a month.  No PCB concern in Hemlock Lake.

Here is the current information
