Title: Brant lake
Post by: Millingtonj on Jan 04, 2017, 03:50 PM
Good day on the lake today, caught some big perch out there. Still 6" of ice with about 2" of slush on top from the rain. Should look beautiful out there this weekend!

Should be fine to use the side by side. I saw a couple of atvs and sleds driving all over the lake. Plus the next couple of nights are suppose to be bitter cold I see no issues.

Thanks for the congrats put in a lot of running today. I've been up there twice this year and jigging has been slow. Tip ups seem to be the way to go for the perch.

I was up there on sunday 1/8.  Plenty of ice, 9-10" everywhere i went.  Had the Quad out with us.  Bite was slow and finicky, but managed some nice perch and monster crappies.  Probably heading back up this weekend sometime.

what kind of stuff do you guys target on brant for perch/crappie? do you stick to shallower vegetation area's, or deep water area's?

I usually fish the deeper flats for perch, usually 30-45 fow... there's always fish there, trick is getting away from the dinks and finding the bigger ones.  I used to do fairly well in shallow water  (10 - 15 fow) but they put mats down to kill the milfoil in the area where I was having the most success about 2 years ago and it turned into a dead zone.  I haven't been able to find another spot that's as productive.

Never had any luck with the crappie, whenever I find structure that looks promising I just end up with a bunch of smallies.

Anybody that is up the next two days that can report conditions out of jimbos would be great. May head up on Saturday. A few years ago I did great on brant for big perch and lots of them. Hardly spent any time on lake George that year that's how good it was. Hopefully it is getting back that way, the past few seasons has been a lot of small fish but I don't use tip ups much. May have to bring them.

Probably Jimbos. The state launch is a pretty far walk from water deeper than 5 ft, so avoid that unless you have a wheeler or you want to get some exercise.

you can access the lake with an ATV at Jimbos too! You just have to park your truck and trailer up by the tennis courts

I see a lot of guys right out in front of jimbos.  So not a far walk at all. If you have a sled or atv you can access the whole lake

It gets pretty deep pretty quick so you don't have to walk far. There's some decent structure just north of Jimbos/point of pines.

Went up Monday out of jimbos and kept 16 perch and 1 crappie. Is it just me and the areas I'm in on this lake or do the perch not seem to group up. Just have one or two show up at one time on the vex. Most of our fish came on tip ups but did get some good ones jigging. Anyone been up since then? Heading up in the morning and assume the edges are just a little wet.

I've experienced the same. I find a hot hole once every 25 I cut it seems. They never hang around under me for long.
I've had a hard time finding many perch over 8", but I'm not beyond cleaning a handful of small one's.  ;D
Title: Re: Brant lake
Post by: hot4trout on Jan 20, 2017, 07:51 AM
The perch there do roam around a lot. I usually fish with two rods if I find a hot hole, that way I can catch a fish on one while the other is being let down. I think the additional action also keeps them around and interested for longer too.
Title: Re: Brant lake
Post by: prchslyr on Jan 20, 2017, 08:17 AM
On the 3rd day it happened I almost gave myself an anxiety attack knowing the window would be short.
Up with the fish and back down as fast as my hands and brain will let me. 5 minutes later I'm starring at an empty screen.  :P
I've always got a 2nd or 3rd rod suspended a little up the column.  ;)
Title: Re: Brant lake
Post by: hot4trout on Jan 20, 2017, 08:29 AM
If you stick around sometimes they'll come back after 20 - 30 minutes.

I move around all day and fish anywhere from 30-50 different holes in a day looking for bigger perch.  My fishing partner will find one hole with a decent bite and stay there all day.  Sometimes one of us does better than the other, but more often than not we end up with pretty close to the same amount of keepers. Go figure.

I don't think there are pike if they do there are in very very small #s
Title: Re: Brant lake
Post by: hot4trout on Jan 20, 2017, 11:09 PM
The sign at the boat launch says pike are present, and the lake stewards I have talked to at the boat launch say they are in there, but I've been fishing brant year round for four years and never heard of anyone catching a pike.  Far as I know the predatory fish are trout, bass and pickerel.

I think the perch move around to chase the smelt. Most of the jumbos i catch are loaded with them.

Post by: Fishmon on Jan 21, 2017, 07:33 AM
Depending on where you are fishing, you can run into a lot of pickerel and some whopper bass.  I have never caught a northern in there, but there are probably a few of them roaming around. Smelt are the primary food source for bigger fish including perch.

I didn't know there was smelt in there. That explains why they are roaming around. I have heard there are giant bass in there as well. One of the baitshop owners on LG in bolton landing showed me 3 pictures of bass around 10lbs that he said they came from Brant lake...and they were bass around 10lbs.

My biggest was about 6 pounds on a jig rod with a plastic swim bait minnow.    Surprised the heck out of me when I looked into 6 inch hole to see his mouth taking up much of the hole.   LOL.  Quickly got him back and I am sure he gave some bass fisherman a look during summer.

Yes but not because of predatory fish. Brant doesn't have the big grass beds like Lake George, so they seem to follow the food around.
Title: Re: Brant lake
Post by: prchslyr on Feb 02, 2017, 06:47 AM
I think the smelt might have a lot to do with those schools moving around so much.
It may also be part of the reason the nicer fish are found over that deeper water.
I'm trying small white swimbaits the next time I fish there to see if I get some different results.
Worth a shot with the luck I've had there.

Iv fished brant 3 times in the last two years. Biggest we caught was a 5lb large mouth that i caught at first light on a frog. The rest of fish we caught were 2 lbers with the occasional 3 lber mixed in. Now, with that said, the first day i fished we were creeping through an area 7 - 10 fow and we spooked two largemouth that were swimming together that were appsolute monsters 7lb+. This was pre spawn to spawn time period for the record.

I think the shores are shot.
A buddy from work fishing Brant last sunday 2/26, said there was 12" of ice but had to use a canoe to get on the ice, lol.

Yep, ice fishing gear is getting put up and getting the boat and kayak ready for open water.
