Good day on the lake today, caught some big perch out there. Still 6" of ice with about 2" of slush on top from the rain. Should look beautiful out there this weekend!

Looks like a good day on the ice. Lake locked up with ice?? Wanna go up with the side by side.
-
nice catch, congrats :icefish: :icefish: :icefish:
-
nice catch! I plan to be out there this weekend!
-
Should be fine to use the side by side. I saw a couple of atvs and sleds driving all over the lake. Plus the next couple of nights are suppose to be bitter cold I see no issues.
-
Thanks for the congrats put in a lot of running today. I've been up there twice this year and jigging has been slow. Tip ups seem to be the way to go for the perch.
-
very nice perch. no browns?
-
There was 9" of ice where I was and no more slush. Somebody was running around on a 6x6.
-
Nice catch might be heading back up on Saturday
-
I was up there on sunday 1/8. Plenty of ice, 9-10" everywhere i went. Had the Quad out with us. Bite was slow and finicky, but managed some nice perch and monster crappies. Probably heading back up this weekend sometime.
-
I saw a guy out there yesterday in a Jeep pulling an ATV on a trailer. Not exactly sure why you would chance that, but, It ain't mine!
-
what kind of stuff do you guys target on brant for perch/crappie? do you stick to shallower vegetation area's, or deep water area's?

I usually fish the deeper flats for perch, usually 30-45 fow... there's always fish there, trick is getting away from the dinks and finding the bigger ones. I used to do fairly well in shallow water (10 - 15 fow) but they put mats down to kill the milfoil in the area where I was having the most success about 2 years ago and it turned into a dead zone. I haven't been able to find another spot that's as productive.
Never had any luck with the crappie, whenever I find structure that looks promising I just end up with a bunch of smallies.

Hmm. Thank you for the info.

That was me ;D

Anybody that is up the next two days that can report conditions out of jimbos would be great. May head up on Saturday. A few years ago I did great on brant for big perch and lots of them. Hardly spent any time on lake George that year that's how good it was. Hopefully it is getting back that way, the past few seasons has been a lot of small fish but I don't use tip ups much. May have to bring them.
-
Fished the northern part today managed half dozen to a dozen perch all about 9".... ice was 10" with 1/4-1/2" of slush where snow was and about 1/4" of water on top
-
I was thinking of going to brant soon for the first time, what's the best place to access the lake
-

Probably Jimbos. The state launch is a pretty far walk from water deeper than 5 ft, so avoid that unless you have a wheeler or you want to get some exercise.
-
Is the state boat launch the only place to access Brant with an ATV?
-
For the general public yes.
-
That was me ;D
with 100 tipups in the back of a pickup?
-
With this warm weather and rain this lake is still arc worthy? Looking to head up tomorrow morning north end..
-
atv* not arc
-
Had 10 inches yesterday off palisades
-

you can access the lake with an ATV at Jimbos too! You just have to park your truck and trailer up by the tennis courts
-
last year there was a sign at jimbos you had to park your truck and trailer at the state launch and go off from there
-
Fished today till round 3 overall slow day but managed baker's dozen of perch smallest was 9" biggest 13". Thank God for ice anchors or shanty woulda turned into sail boat haha. Lake still got 10" of ice wasn't water or slush on top only by shore here and there by bubblers. One ATV out there today
-
is that true that Jimbos no longer allows parking? Please confirm
-
Besides Jimbo's and the boat launch, does anyone have recommendations on where to access the lake? Looking to head up with a buddy for the first time this weekend.
-

Haven't seen a sign stating that only one that says ice fishing parking . Was there last weekend
-
That was me ;D
We were insanely jealous. That thing looked like a lot of fun!
-
i have personally parked 3 times at Jimbos this year and have had no problems whatsoever!
-
How far of a walk out of Jimbo's to any decent fishing water? I got married at jimbo's 5 years ago and have yet to fish the lake.

I see a lot of guys right out in front of jimbos. So not a far walk at all. If you have a sled or atv you can access the whole lake

It gets pretty deep pretty quick so you don't have to walk far. There's some decent structure just north of Jimbos/point of pines.

I do have a atv, but I would make enemies if it goes out on the ice lol
-
Went up Monday out of jimbos and kept 16 perch and 1 crappie. Is it just me and the areas I'm in on this lake or do the perch not seem to group up. Just have one or two show up at one time on the vex. Most of our fish came on tip ups but did get some good ones jigging. Anyone been up since then? Heading up in the morning and assume the edges are just a little wet.
-
I had the mother load under me for 3 minutes last week and then the rest of the day was I here and there
-
I had the mother load under me for 3 minutes last week and then the rest of the day was I here and there
I've experienced the same. I find a hot hole once every 25 I cut it seems. They never hang around under me for long.
I've had a hard time finding many perch over 8", but I'm not beyond cleaning a handful of small one's. ;D
-
The perch there do roam around a lot. I usually fish with two rods if I find a hot hole, that way I can catch a fish on one while the other is being let down. I think the additional action also keeps them around and interested for longer too.
-
On the 3rd day it happened I almost gave myself an anxiety attack knowing the window would be short.
Up with the fish and back down as fast as my hands and brain will let me. 5 minutes later I'm starring at an empty screen. :P
I've always got a 2nd or 3rd rod suspended a little up the column. ;)
-
If you stick around sometimes they'll come back after 20 - 30 minutes.
I move around all day and fish anywhere from 30-50 different holes in a day looking for bigger perch. My fishing partner will find one hole with a decent bite and stay there all day. Sometimes one of us does better than the other, but more often than not we end up with pretty close to the same amount of keepers. Go figure.
-
Do you think the perch roam around more there due to predator fish? They stay on the move?
-
Brant doesn't have many predator fish
-
Brant doesn't have many predator fish
It has Browns and rainbows right? Pike? Largemouths and smallies?
-
I don't think there are pike if they do there are in very very small #s
-
The sign at the boat launch says pike are present, and the lake stewards I have talked to at the boat launch say they are in there, but I've been fishing brant year round for four years and never heard of anyone catching a pike. Far as I know the predatory fish are trout, bass and pickerel.
I think the perch move around to chase the smelt. Most of the jumbos i catch are loaded with them.
-
Depending on where you are fishing, you can run into a lot of pickerel and some whopper bass. I have never caught a northern in there, but there are probably a few of them roaming around. Smelt are the primary food source for bigger fish including perch.
-
I didn't know there was smelt in there. That explains why they are roaming around. I have heard there are giant bass in there as well. One of the baitshop owners on LG in bolton landing showed me 3 pictures of bass around 10lbs that he said they came from Brant lake...and they were bass around 10lbs.
-
My biggest was about 6 pounds on a jig rod with a plastic swim bait minnow. Surprised the heck out of me when I looked into 6 inch hole to see his mouth taking up much of the hole. LOL. Quickly got him back and I am sure he gave some bass fisherman a look during summer.
-
Thinking of heading up to Brandt on Sunday anyone know how are the ice conditions? Was thinking of heading out by Jimbos.
-
There is a tournament this Saturday. I'm not sure if it runs Sunday also or not.
Plan on a bunch of extra traffic there this weekend.
-
Thanks...will do
-
How was it out there today? Any slush? Headed up in the morning with the wheeler.
-
drove by ..a lot of people fishing and wheelers were on the ice
-
Where is this lake located?
-
Where is this lake located?
West of Lily Pond.
-
West of Lily Pond.
That is hilarious man! My kids love playing with the 10" bass up there.
All jokes aside. North of LG. South of Schroon.
Take route 9 to route 8.
-
Exit 25 on the Northway. Turn right on 8.
-
Your destination is on the left. ;D
-
It's the flat area. ;D
-
Anyone fish today? How was the bite, and how is the ice?
-
Just a few moire posts and you'll be able to see the reports and conditions page. I think you'll find 10+ inches.
-
Do you think the perch roam around more there due to predator fish? They stay on the move?
Yes but not because of predatory fish. Brant doesn't have the big grass beds like Lake George, so they seem to follow the food around.
-
I think the smelt might have a lot to do with those schools moving around so much.
It may also be part of the reason the nicer fish are found over that deeper water.
I'm trying small white swimbaits the next time I fish there to see if I get some different results.
Worth a shot with the luck I've had there.

Iv fished brant 3 times in the last two years. Biggest we caught was a 5lb large mouth that i caught at first light on a frog. The rest of fish we caught were 2 lbers with the occasional 3 lber mixed in. Now, with that said, the first day i fished we were creeping through an area 7 - 10 fow and we spooked two largemouth that were swimming together that were appsolute monsters 7lb+. This was pre spawn to spawn time period for the record.

I have been doing decent toward the north end, the fish come and go but the average size is a lot better.
-
How thick is the Ice? You guys aren't fishing open water are you?
-
I think the entire lake has 10" now. Maybe 12
-
We are headed to Brant tomorrow. Is it safe to access he lake from the DEC boat launch with an ATV?
-
How about accessing the ice from Jimbo's? Can you park there with a trailer? If so, where do you get on the ice with a machine at Jimbo's? It will be dark when I get there and I have never been there before. If anyone has this information, I would greatly appreciate it.

I believe you can park with a trailer, I've seen them parked there the past few weekends. As far as getting on the ice, just follow everyone else's tracks.

What can you catch at this lake? Any lakers or eyes? I'm looking to target some bigger fish with tip ups
-

Perch, crappie, pickerel, brown trout, smelt
-
We fished Brant today from sunrise to 3pm. 6 pickerel and about 10 perch. No trout.
-
Took a wheeler off jimbos Friday plenty of ice 12+ inches where I was not saying that's everywhere tho
-
Anyonecsee those idiots (kids) driving about 70mph down the middle of the lake in a car on Saturday? They missed running over my buddy's tip ups by about 3ft.

Yes, lol. They were out there a couple weeks ago too.
-
Boys in green have shown a presence up there this year.
Let's hope they're there the next time the yahoos come out to play.
-
Glad I missed that show ...I know it's a long shot but did anyone happen to find a tackle box Saturday morning at jumbos ?! Will give ya 20$ for it back lol

I live in the Burgh and know plenty of people fishing that lake every weekend.
I'll holler at the Facebook network. It's worth a shot.
-
Thanks man I appreciate it like I said I know it's a long shot but worth a shot Almost positive it was right in those trees next to the path right where everyone steps on
-
Heading to the lake for the first time this weekend. Trying to target yellow perch wondering if any one can give me pointers on general location or anything thanks.

Find smelt and you'll find the big perch on Brant.
-
Thank you that helps for what bait to use. I read previous post about the acess. So I can acess the lake from jimbos correct?
-
Yes you can. They have plowed area as you come off the road to the left.
-
Going to try the evening bite tomorrow out by jimbos anyone have any luck here during dark?
-
Anyone been fishing recently? Last comment was posted 2/7/17 regarding Brant.
-
Tried the night bite about a month ago in the cove directly across from jumbos. Bite was heavy right before dark but died quick after dark. Got to be aware it gets shallow over there in a hurry
-
Hey guys, how is the shoreline ice? Can you still get on at the boat launch or Jimbos'?
-

I think the shores are shot.
A buddy from work fishing Brant last sunday 2/26, said there was 12" of ice but had to use a canoe to get on the ice, lol.
Yep, ice fishing gear is getting put up and getting the boat and kayak ready for open water.
