My name is Brian Henry and I am the biology teacher at Broadalbin-Perth High School. We are a small, rural district just a few miles from the Great Sacandaga Lake. I have recently started a fishing club at our school to offer our students an opportunity to enjoy the natural resources that exist in their “backyard”. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. We currently have 40 students (both males and females) ready to participate in this club. I anticipate many more kids will join once word gets out about the experiences the current members are enjoying.
However, we are not an affluent district or community and we often struggle to fund and equip clubs such as this one. It is the reality of the socio-economic status we face daily. The reason for this message is to reach out to people like you to ask for support. My hope is that you will be willing to donate fishing equipment to our club so the kids can enjoy the sport we all covet.
Although we would be more than happy to receive any donations that you are willing to send us, I do want to let you know what I think are important items for our club. Some of our members do have their own gear, but a majority of them do not.
Ice fishing:
· Tip ups and ice poles
· ice fishing line and terminal tackle
· Augers
· Sleds to carry equipment on the ice
· Bait buckets
· Pop up shelters
Open water fishing:
· A variety of poles and reels
· Fishing line and terminal tackle
· Tackle boxes and bags
· A variety of lures and jigs
Again, these items are merely suggestions and we are more than willing to accept any items you are willing to donate. We would gladly take second hand items, gear that has just been collecting dust in your garage, or maybe tackle that you have personally made. I would be very happy to share photos and experiences with you of our kids using the equipment and gear that you donate.
We hope that you will consider donating to our program. Please know that all contributions you make will positively impact our students and give them a chance to enjoy the comradery and love for the outdoors that fishing brings.
All donations can be dropped off at:
Broadalbin-Perth High School
100 Bridge Street
Broadalbin, NY 12025
Thank you in advance for your time and consideration and please feel free to contact me at (518) 954-2600 or [email protected] if you have any questions.

-

im going to send some things out next week. i will work on it this weekend. wished there was more of this up here where i live.
-
Thank you very much for your support! I am looking forward to building great relationships with the fishing community on this site. Our school administrators enthusiastically endorsed our fishing club so I cant wait to get it going. The buzz around the school has been awesome!
-
Welcome Brian, I watch those high school bass fishing shows and I say how cool would that have been growing up. Finally someone trying to get these kids back to the outdoors!!! I have some Bass pro, Cabelas, and Dicks gift cards that have some residual balances on them I will send to you. Put me on record if you need a volunteer to drive the kids around in the boat and get on the BP Payroll I am in. Ha Ha I do not think the kids are allowed to drive the boat at the high school level. I am assuming all bass related items will be fine.
-
Thanks Gadway! All items at this point are welcome. Our long term goal is to establish a competitive fishing team at the school. And yes we may have to take you up on your offer to volunteer! As of this morning we have almost 50 kids signed up to participate!!!!
-
Welcome Brian,
Man what an opportunity. Its good to see you getting the kids interested in something outdoors related. If i ever get anything to give i definately will, until then you can get ahold of me for some volunteer work if needed. This is a very cool idea. I like it!
-
What a great idea, kinda jealous that I didn't have a fish club when I was in school. It's wonderful to see you are getting kids away from the video games/computers and back in to the outdoors. I have a bunch of older tip ups that I no longer use that I can give you, may need new line on them. I also have a couple poles, reels, bait buckets and a few other accessories that are just gathering dust. I drive thru Broadalbin every so often, can I just drop them off at the school?
-
And don't forget the summer site.. ;)
http://www.myfishfinder.com/ (http://www.myfishfinder.com/)
-
Thank you Crappie Killr. Yes you can drop off any of your donations to the high school. I have already informed the secretaries that donations will be arriving via drop offs and via mail.
I will be sure to check out the summer site too. I will also inform the kids about these website so they can become active contributors.
-
I ran a youth fishing club for a number of years (10+). You may want to align with a nation group for liability and 501c3 status. I worked with this organization and they are super people to work with. http://www.teenanglers.org
They are very generous with donations.
Tell them Joe sent you.
-
Thanks for the tip Joe. I will be sure to look into it.
-
Brian,
Does your school have a small engine program? I have a older big dog 10 inch Strikemaster Mag2000 that no one can seem to keep running, I have updated to electric augers. Blades may need sharpening, but if you can get someone to get it running its all yours. You will have to problems pulling a pike through that mammoth hole. If so I will be in Amsterdam next week I can drop it off.. Probably just needs like a carb kit or something.
-
I just mailed out 2 packages of icefishing jigs that I never opened to you guys.
-
Thank you AdkRoy and Gadway!!!
Your help and generosity is much appreciated. We do not have a small engine program, but we have plenty of knowledgeable kids that would be happy to work on the auger. With the number of kids that could potentially join us for a day on the ice we will be drilling plenty of holes. Your auger would be a welcomed addition.
Thanks again and I hope everyone can spread the word for us. I will be posting photos of our trips and meetings once we get things rolling.
-
I realize you are taking in anything available but just a question, what species are you targeting when ice fishing?
-
We will be teaching the kids a variety of techniques from jigging to using tip ups. We will likely spend most of our time on Sacandaga because of its proximity so we will target pike, walleye, perch, and smallmouth bass. As we get settled and feel comfortable with the kids we hope to travel to other lakes to target specifically panfish, or lakers, etc. The sky is the limit. We just want to expose the kids to all disciplines. Thanks.
-
I think this is a great program. I'll get a care package together for you and mail it out next week. Keep the kids fishin & keep them out of trouble. Thanks for your good work.
-
Thanks you Big T!
Your support is appreciated!

-
Hey adkRoy - received your package today! Thank you so much for your donation to our fish club. The jigs will definitely get some good use.
It is much appreciated!
-
you are welcome.
-
Great pictures, looks like the kids had fun. I never realized GSL had so many smallmouth, I always think of it as pike and walleye.
-
Have you reached out to Jim's bait shop, Dave's bait and tackle, and Franks Gun shop to see if they would be willing to make donations since they are all local and near you.
-
Typically we don't get into the smallies in the winter, but we do catch plenty in the spring time. It was a nice surprise. The kids caught a few nice ones.
-
Funny you mention that adkRoy, I am headed to Franks tomorrow to see if they are interested in helping out. I am also going to stop by Runnings in Gloversville. I will also reach out to Jim's Bait shop and Dave's. Great idea! Thanks!
-
Thank you crappie killr for your donation. Awesome stuff!
-
Make sure those kids first learn about ice fishing safety. Tons of videos showing how to check ice thickness, and what to do if you fall through. These are things people need to know.

its the most important part of ice fishing for everyone involved.
-
Yes, we have had a classroom session with some of the kids already. On the ice we showed them the gear we have available for emergency purposes. I even showed them a video of me jumping into a swimming pool this summer with my float suit on to demonstrate the technology that exists to ensure safety on the ice 😄
-
Hey BigT - Thank you so much for your generous care package! Lots of goodies in it for the kids. A few of them were in my class when the package arrived so I let them open it up. It was like watching my own kids on Christmas morning. They were so excited!
Thanks again! I'm so happy to see the support we are getting. You guys are great!!!
-
That's great. As stated I have more for them when they start fishing open water. best wishes to your students & I hope they catch a lot of good memories
-
We took another group of kids out on GSL yesterday afternoon. Its a lot of fun to have the kids out there with us. Love the enthusiasm when a flag goes up! In all we caught 14 fish...1 big perch, 5 walleye, 8 smallies. One of the kids lost a really big eye at the hole.
I also want to acknowledge Frank's Gun Shop for their help in making sure the kids have what they need out on the ice! Yesterday, they donated bait, a bait bucket, new tip ups, and they are allowing us to use one of their augers. I can't thank John and his staff enough for their efforts. They truly see the value in getting these kids out on the water and learning the sport.
Please visit us on twitter @BP_FishClub to get the latest details and photos about our club. Thanks again.
-
That's awesome! The kids sound like they are having a blast and Kudos to Franks Gun and Tackle for donating to your club!
-
thats great . i sent you a small package out last week. should get it today or tommorrow not much but im sure ill be accumulating more soon.
-
Thank you Fishy1. We are on winter vacation right now so we won't get your package until Monday. I'll be sure to let the kids open it up first thing in the morning.
We are also going to have a fish fry for all kids as sort of a "grand opening/welcoming" to the Fish Club when school is back in session.
Thanks again!

We had our fish fry this afternoon. 40 kids showed up to participate. It was awesome! We couldn't fry the fish fast enough. Special thanks to Gadway and Crappiekillr for donating fish to our cause. We all had a blast.

Here is our official logo for our club. We had a few different ones, but this is the one the kids voted for.
I think it is a great choice!
What do you guys think of it?
-
Sweet. I wish I was in school again.....
-
like it . glad to see such a good turnout for the fish fry. just an awsome scene. hope this catches on everywhere in schools.
-
Makes me happy to see kids getting into our sport. Glad I could help out. I'm anxious to see how this grows.

You also have Ross's bait shop close by.
-
Awesome pictures. The kids picked out a nice design.
-
You should get some decals made up for sale. I would be proud to buy one and put it on my boat.
-
Yes, we will be getting stickers and decals along with sweatshirts, hats, polos, etc. I will certainly let you know once we have them available. Thanks!
-
Wish I had you as a teacher some 40 something years ago.. ;D
-
Back then some of us were lucky enough to have grandfathers, fathers, uncles who were willing to teach us the fine art of fishing. It sure took a lot of patience & practice to get us to learn it the right way, but when things came together, and lessons were learned, there were smiles and congrats goin all around. I sure miss those days, but I hope to pass along some of the lessons I've learned, along with a few new tricks someday. The huge proud smile you get when a youngster hooks and lands their first fish is well worth it.......Just my 2 cents worth. GOOD LUCK KIDS!!!
-
Thanks guys!
I am just paying it forward. Lots of people helped to get me to where I am today so I am just returning the favor. I am enjoying the process just as much as the kids ;D
-
Hey Fishy1, we received your second package today! Thanks again! You are awesome.
-
I see in today's Leader Herald that there is going to be an article about the club in Sunday's edition in the travel section.

You are so right.. Fishing with my gramps with a cane pole at the crick with garden dug worms...
-
It may take some time, but I will gather up a mixed bag of stuff for you guys, great idea and I hope your program continues to flourish.
-
Great article about the fishing club in the Leader Herald today. A special thanks to Rob Javarone for writing the piece. He spent the day with us out on the ice and fished with the kids.
The first few months of our club have been outstanding! Looking forward to getting the kids out on open water soon.
-
On another note, I was able to get on Lake George today for the last time this season. Didn't take any kids because of safety concerns, but I did meet up with some friends including Gadway and Crappiekillr. We did extremely well with the perch bite and I was able to land this beauty on my jig rod. I got lucky! Great way to close out the ice fishing season! ;D

It was nice fishing with you yesterday, amazing Salmon glad I was at the hole to watch him come up. The video was amazing and pretty quick thinking of Crappiekillr to drill a hole next to you and stick his arm down in the water to catch it all on the go pro. Ice did get pretty sketchy getting off though, didn't care for that last 20 foot of shoreline.
-
wow great looking male salmon.

you're not kidding... love the big kype
how long was that bad boy??
-
Thanks! The fish was 24 1/2 inches and 5 lbs. And yes that is a big hook jaw!
Check out the video we got on the GoPro. Crappiekillr took one for the team and put his hand underwater to get the footage.
-
I know we have spoken over the past few months and I have some ice fishing gear that I purchased for clients to use but I don't think I will be using them. Knowing you have gotten many donations, I don't want to load you up with gear you don't need. Let me know what you still need or would like and I'll go through it.
I have the old 4-H shanty that is insulated and is 6'X8' that we can put out and I'll give you a key to use while on the GSL. We can coordinate that next winter. Its got a cook stove in it for heat and its great when the wind picks up.
Give me a call - Allwater Guide Service 527-6175

Thanks Iceman! I'll be in touch!
-
has the club made any plans on fishing open water soon or hitting trout streams when season opens.
-
Yes! Once the weather gets a bit warmer we plan on bringing the kids on numerous outings. As well, we are going to help out CaptJJ and the Lake George Fishing Alliance with their salmon stocking efforts this spring. This will be our first official field trip. Should be a lot of fun and educational.

-
Hi fishy1,
Yes we are still taking donations!!! The kids are currently refurbishing some donated traps. They are having a blast. Many of them are learning how they work since they have never ice fished before. Looking forward to getting them involved.
I will post some photos from a few trips we took this summer. The club is really starting to take off!!
Thanks for your continued support

The kids have really learned a lot in a short period of time.
Also, I am extremely happy to announce that I have been contacted by a few other schools who have been inspired to start clubs of their own. We are hoping to get together with these clubs once they get going.

-
Thanks Fishy1!
My dad took me ice fishing when I was a kid and I had so much fun. I am just happy that I can provide the same opportunities to other kids. The administration has been extremely supportive and I am also getting a lot of help from another teacher at the school. I also want to mention that Frank's Gun Shop has gone out of their way to support our activities. They have been very generous and willing to help us in anyway they can.
-
hi: do we send our goodies to you brian at the same address at the school? any hints what they need most?
-
I had the pleasure of meeting Chessieman today. He drove to the school and donated some great gear to the club. We had a wonderful conversation about getting the kids involved in fishing and we shared a few stories.
Thank you very much Chessieman!! Your kindness is much appreciated. We hope to see you out on the ice soon.
-
Hey Fishy1...yes you can send donations to:
Brian Henry - BP FISH CLUB
Broadalbin-Perth High School
100 Bridge Street
Broadalbin, NY 12025
I would say that we need rod and reel combos and jigging gear the most. Although we are not in the position to refuse anything. We still have plenty of needs across the board.
THANK YOU!!!
-
thanks brian . glad you got to meet chessieman.
-
I think I met you on lake pleasant last year. Was it you that jigged up the nice trout? What a great thing for a school to start. Ill see what I can come up with
-
That wasn't me, I believe that was my colleague who is helping with the fishing club. He was up there a few times. We are thinking of bringing a group of kids up there this season. We are trying to spread our wings a bit and get the kids on a few different bodies of water. We took them to Sacandaga and Caroga Lake last season. Hoping for Saratoga Lake and Lake George this season as well.
-
Fishing club still on for 2017?
-
Took a few kids out on Lake Pleasant today. We did really well with the perch. Iced about 75. A few slammers too! The kids got creative and took this photo with the fish we kept. Great day!

Beautiful day out there! We had 5 out on the ice today.
-
Great Fish,Great video.
-
Was curious how the club was doing, great catch, sure a few more members will be with you next time out after they go bragging about their catch ;D
-
Love the perch sign!!!
-
The bragging has already begun! The kids that went today made sure their buddies heard all about their success. The perch sign was them rubbing it in a bit. LOL
-
Great stuff, glad this was successful and still going on👍
-
Decided not to do any fishing this weekend so I made a trip up to Fish 307 and introduced myself to Jeff, the owner. We talked for a bit and he donated some gear to our fishing club. Thank you Jeff and Fish 307!! Your generousity is much appreciated. The kids are slowly building an arsenal that will surely catch them fish for years to come. Great store...great selections...great people!!! THANK YOU!
-
That's another reason why I enjoy doing business with Fish307.
-
Despite the snow, we took a few members of the fish club to Great Sacandaga Lake this morning. We did well. Caught a number of big perch, some smallies, and a pike. The kids did great and I give them a lot of credit for getting out there on a less than ideal weather day. -
Nice fish and keep up the good work....h2l
-
Thanks guys! I appreciate the support. We are still hoping to get the group on Lake George so they can experience the ultimate perch bite, but we are not very confident it is going to happen. The King needs to make a lot more ice for us to venture out there.
-
Awesome,very nice quality perch
-
Hey guys...the B-P Fish Club has a great group of motivated kids this year. Our new group of Freshmen bring a lot of experience and enthusiasm to the club. We are hoping to get them out on the ice in the next week or two. I will be sure to post photos from our trips. Please check out our YouTube channel at BPFishingClub. Here is a link to a video we created last year.
We hope to create a few more this season. Thanks again for everyone’s support. It is much appreciated!
-
Very nice......
-
Awesome video. Great to see kids getting involved in fishing.

Thanks guys!!!
I also want to give a shout out to Frank’s Gun & Tackle Shop in Gloversville. They have really helped us out and have gone out of their way to make sure the kids have gear to enjoy their time out on the ice. If you are headed to Sacandaga to fish, please stop by Frank’s!!
-
Does the BP club still need tackle?
-
Yes! We are always in need of tackle. We have over 40 kids in the club and although we have received very generous donations from a number of our iceshanty members, we still find ourselves looking for gear to accommodate our growing number of students.
Any donations are welcome!
You can drop gear off at the school or mail it.

Yes! We are always in need of tackle. We have over 40 kids in the club and although we have received very generous donations from a number of our iceshanty members, we still find ourselves looking for gear to accommodate our growing number of students.
Any donations are welcome!
You can drop gear off at the school or mail it.

Thanks so much for helping us out!
I'll be sending some your way very soon. I nearly killed myself the other day when I moved my outboard to a different spot in a storage closet and almost tripped over a bunch of duplicate ice fishing equipment.

Thanks Taxi1!!
I appreciate your help.
We ended up cancelling our club trip to GSL today due to the potential unsafe ice conditions. We had approximately 20 kids going. We were bummed, but it was certainly not worth the risk. We will try again next weekend!

I wanted to take this opportunity to say thanks to Chessieman for his very generous donation to the B-P Fishing Club! He has gone out of his way during the past few years to help out the kids! It is much appreciated!
The club is firing on cylinders right now and the members are having a blast. Thanks Chessieman and others for paying it forward. Your donations are making a difference in the lives of many kids.

Finally shipped some poles today! Had trouble finding a long skinny box! A couple of he ice poles are just over 3 feet.
I want to ship an auger but need to find a box for it. I think I can screw it into two pieces but haven't tried it yet.

Great video love seeing the kids into fishing , is there anything that you are needing?

Thanks Taxi1 !!!
I will be sure to look for it at school tomorrow.
We took 9 kids out on Sacandaga last weekend. We didn’t have much luck but the kids had a blast. My co-advisor and I are still using most of our own gear when we take the kids out, but we are slowly getting a great inventory of equipment for the kids. For example, we had a number of old tip ups donated last year. The kids refurbished them and now we have them available to the kids to sign out on the weekends. We also have a few jigging rods they can sign out too.
We will continue to accept any and all equipment. We have over 30 kids in the club so we have lots of needs. Next weekend starts our winter break and we expect to take a majority of the kids out on a few trips.
Thanks again!!!
