Title: what's the strangest, scariest, bizarre experience you've had on the ice?
Post by: LP Steve on Feb 13, 2015, 07:56 AM
Hi guys just wanted to change things up a bit and hear some stories from you guys about years past on the ice. I think mine would be when I fell though many years back when I was in high school. Small pond but couldn't get out, ice kept breaking. Also one time I was at long pond fishing alone along edgemere Dr. Two people a woman and man came all the way from the houses on the east side directly at me. Both took a hard spill on the ice about 100 yards away from me and laid on the ice for a minute or two. They got up walked slowly to the road and took it back toward where they came from. Not too exciting but if you have a story to share I would love to hear it.

Was out on a sub zero day had my new flip over set all the tip ups. Next went to light my colman power cat turned it on then hit the ignitor then. The entire heater ignited like a fireball. I grabbed it and heaved it out the door melted part of new shanty and roasted on ice for long time till ran out of propane.

quite a few years ago my brother and I went to fix lunch in our Shappell 3000 portable. I had a coleman 2 burner stove. When we lit it, the flame was really low and weak. We couldn't figure out why when all of a sudden the whole stove blew into a fireball with us in the shanty! After screaming fire we managed to kick it out the door (which I had left open thank god). Once it was outside we kicked snow on it until the flames went out. After looking it over, we saw where the fuel line had crack and it must have been spewing fuel and that's why it blew.

Well this wasn't me but my dad, he went up to lake Simcoe with my cousin and my cousins father in law and their buddies with his hut he got for Christmas (It was a Cabelas hut) and he was going "ice camping" as he calls it so he was staying overnight in his hut. The winds kicked up to like 75 mph during the middle of the night, he had the hut tied down with the crappy  little strings it comes with (he now uses ratchet straps) but anyways the wind snapped the strings and tore off the skirt from the bottom of his hut but he grabbed on to it before it blew away and started yelling for help. As soon as my cousin ran out to help him he lost his grip on the hut and the hut just barely missed hitting my cousin. He never found that hut again and now whenever he fishes with the guys they call him Mr.Cabelas. Pretty strange experience for him for sure so thought i'd post it here.

Alone, in the middle of a large pond. Three miles from the nearest person, if he was home. Wilderness. Sitting on my bucket and almost dark thinking its about time to get going, which i usually do when the coyotes howling changes from pretty cool, to a bit creepy.  But always invigorating.  That night was silent. Then, i see the pack. Seven or eight coyotes moving at a good clip, single file perpendicular to me at maybe 100 yards. Hmm, thats interesting. They stop, look in my direction then start quartering towards me, it was obvious they were taking all cues from lead dog. Now, very interesting. Half the distance closes and they stop. Not just heads facing my way now, but bodies are turned looking like a string of linebackers. Silhouettes against the snow. Lead dog only, starts walking right towards me head carried low. OK, now its TOO interesting. I stand up with bucket in hand. Really, this is my weapon, a bucket with a couple pounds of beer in it.  Lead dog stops, head goes way up. Stare down. I only perceive wolves. Now what? Do I be the aggressor? Move slow, move fast? Does ANY movement trigger bad things?
Head starts to move up and down side to side like a deer checking you out. Turns, looks back once, then trots towards and passes his posse and they follow in the original direction.  My bucket got super light real quick. That was GREAT !!!!

Here are two of the more bizzare things I have seen on the ice over the years:

1. Fishing on Rockland Lake, where there is a walking path around the lake, we used to get some strange people go by. The strangest was the day a hipster looking guy was playing his guitar while walking past us across the lake. He never stopped to talk, just kept playing away as he crossed the lake.

2. On Pontusuc Lake in Mass., we saw a full size yellow school bus doing donuts and jumping a pressure ridge for about half an hour. Sure hope there were no kids on board!

This was probably most bizarre for me.
It was February 18, 1989...  I lived in Michigan at the time and I built a permy that I had on Lake Macatawa...My two roommates Killer and Brooke use to help me take care of and used it all the time...   One sunny after noon we were out side and heard a noise like a lawn mower..   We looked up to see an ultralite plane coming in for a landing..  Once he did we went over to talk to him..  He was an instructor from a neighboring town...  Only instructors can have a 2 seater and take up passangers...   He took each of us for a ride around the lake..  Open cockpit and all ...
Here is a picture of a picture of what I wrote on the inside of the shanty later that day...
I was just texting those roommates  to tell them our anniversary was coming up....

1) Saw a fairly fresh deer kill on the ice at Putnam Station one year.  Wasn't much left, coyotes.

2)  I took my male Brittany spaniel out on the ice on the South end of Saratoga Lake 40 yrs ago.  He distinguished himself by marking a guys thermos and the back of another guys snowsuit.  I was going to yell at him (the dog) but neither guy noticed so I kept quiet.

Fished a pond in MA and had a small Cessna land on the ice.
Pilot knew the guy that was fishing, shot the breeze for awhile and then took off again.

Saw another guy using a kite-surfing kite with skis on Lake Chocura in NH. He was quite proficient at it and made it seem effortless as he "flew" across the ice.

I was ice-fishing Lake George many years ago and this father and son from Jamaica came out on to the ice. They asked all kinds of questions about icefishing. Well a truck drives by and you should have seen how big their eyes got. They asked about driving on the ice and all that we told them as long as it was thick enough that you could (it was 20 inches at the time). Well they leave and walk into shore. A few minutes later we see this rented honda civic drive out on to the ice and the son gets out with a video camera and starts videoing his father driving on the ice and doing donuts and stuff. It was hilarious.

I was fishing the south end Silver Lake in Wyoming County a few years back. Not many people out that day, as it was a weekday. I was just about in the center of the lake, with nobody else say within 200 yards of me. I step out of the hut, to er uh, check the drainage. As I'm standing looking due north, I notice a small plane is flying straight down the lake towards me, probably a few hundred feet up. I think nothing of it. As it gets closer and closer, it drops lower and lower. When it gets about a quarter mile out from me (still flying directly at me), I start to get that weird feeling, kind of like when the ice cracks when yer walking around during early ice season. At about 30 yards out and maybe 30 feet off the ice, the plane takes a sharp turn to the left and up..... and flew away.

trapping on a small pond about a mile behind my house i fell through with hip waders on. very heavy when they filled up with water i thought i was a goner. every time id get back up on the ice id break right through again. ended up smashing the ice with my forearms all the way to shore bloody arms and all i was in survival mode it was nuts. emptied boots took clothes off and squeezed the water out of them and had to walk back to my house, including open field with 20mph winds. by the time i got back my whole body was stiff and i was shuffling my feet. thought that was my last day on earth

Years ago as a kid I was fishing the Small Boat Harbor with my Dad and brother.  Fishing was real slow so we figured, lets walk out around the wall.  Was ice and snow as far as we could see, so we ventured out.  Stopped 60 - 70 yards from the wall and I took the spud to cut a hole and in a single hit it blew right through.  We quickly headed back into the harbor, how we didn't go through is beyond me.  To this day I still get butterflies in my stomach just thinking about it.  In hind sight it was a really dumb thing to do and we were real lucky nobody was killed.

I never tell my wife about that story either!   :o

Another time fishing Kodaks Honey Hole tournament I went through then guys all around the lake started falling through state trooper helicopter rescued a few of the fishermen. Another time I pooped in the hood of my snowmobile suit, fished all day. On the way home thing warmed up then we found it. I'll never live that one down.

A guy next to me caught a trout,   put it on the ice, and a hawk flew down out of a tree and took it, he looked at me and said did you. See that. And I said I sure did. I never leave my fish flapping on the ice. After that.

One year I was fishing, and the wind kicked up and you could not see a thing.  When the wind stopped blowing. I was the only one on the lake, then it started blowing again, and this guy showed up , and started preaching to me about god, told me he was walking on water. It was really strange, He walked away, and disapered . and I caught my limit of trout, and I went home. Very strange.

Funny as I was reading stories trying to remember things that I have seen on the ice this one reminded me of the strangest thing.

It had to be back in 1988. My dad and I were in the middle of Oneida on the four wheeler towing a trailer with our lab. We see something on the ice that we thought was a tip of a buoy. It turned out to be a loon. The dog jumped out and tried to grab it. We grabbed the dog before the bird pecked the heck out of him. We ended up picking up the loon and bringing it to shore. My dad had me drive the 4 wheeler while he held the bird. I remember the bird pecking me in the back. We called the DEC and they took it and released it in the Oneida river.

We figured the bird landed on the ice at night. It was glare ice so it probably looked like open water. The bird would have died if we didn't pick it up.

A few years ago while ice fishing a state lake in the Poconos in Pa there were two Bald Eagles watching us fishing , each was perched in a tree about  200 yards away , every time we would catch a fish we would place it on the ice and one of them would fly in to us and pick up the fish and fly off to an apposing tree . This when on for hours and the eagles would come as close as 20 yards to us and swoop  down and pick up the fish on the ice at full speed  that was quite the show mother nature put on for us that day, I will never forget it..

When I get done with a week of night shifts I will take off to go fishing at around 1-2AM. Get good spots and get holes drilled early. Nothing is creepier than being alone on a 30k acre lake in the middle of the night. Every crack and every slushy area you go through is scary when no one else is around even if you know better.

Just a month ago I was ice camping on Lake champlain in Ticonderoga. I was the only one there after dusk which by itself is not new for me. What was new is that I brought my skates and took off on a late night adventure, leaving my shanty at 9 PM. This adventure has been on my bucket list for a few years and the weather was perfect for it, about 30 degrees out and no wind. Well, I skated an easy 6 miles from the shanty and loving the eerie solitude on the big ice. After I turned around the cloud cover made it a lot darker.

I tripped in a foot wide pressure crack that I could not see and went down hard, really banging my knee. My right leg was wet to the knee. I was looking around and the area did not look familiar - I thought I had turned around a point of land on the way back that I should not have, and now I am panicking thinking I headed into a dead end bay where I would not be able to get back to the shanty. I was calling myself a MF'er and wondering what I should do. I just kept going the same direction and 10 minutes later I recognized a landmark and knew it was the right way. I got back to the shanty, drank a celebratory can of Bud or 3, and turned in for the night with the heater blasting. I slept very well that night and enjoyed telling the story to everyone I know.

A few years ago I watched several US Coast Guard members in cold water gear push a 17ft aluminum rowboat across the snow and ice for about 400 yards on Braddocks Bay. At some point they stopped and cut a big hole in the ice and spent the next few hours practicing an ice rescue. Once training was complete, they pushed that boat all the way back across the bay. Impressive.

Had a small herd of about 4 deer cross Hammond lake in Pennsylvania also  in PA there was an airplane doing touch and goes on the lake right over the shanty that was a little spooky at first thought the dude was crashing.   Thought I saw a catfish swim by the hole. The whiskers turned out to be an otter which decided to surface in my hut! scared the hell out of me, and I put my foot over the hole as he went back under. On Lake Erie collapsing my clam suitcase style hut a 40 mph gust caught the hut like a sail. I was moving fast, and my friend tackled me. I was messing with him on the 2 hour walk in. I could have been back to shore in 10 minutes. He learned to wear cleats after that outing due to several falls on the slick ice. One of our first times out surprised he didn`t get a concussion. Lake Erie again walking in with an East [ offshore wind] My friend Jim, and I came to where a crack opened up, and we could not jump that far. We just kept following the crack towards shore until we thankfully found a spot where we could run, and jump 5 - 6 feet. Fell through in my pond twice up to my neck in water 17 feet deep. Late ice 6 inches thick but looked like frozen snow. Both times figured it might be iffy had hand spikes, and cleats with goretex clothes on, and actually got out very fast, and not to wet. Cabin was already warm so not life threatening. Last one Erie again with my friend Paul. Walked out about 2 miles out. Wind picked up bad, and total whiteout. We figured we were out far enough, and started fishing 50 feet of water seeing nobody anywhere. Few hours later wind stops, look around, and there is like 20 guys all around us. Never saw or heard anything. Taught me to always carry a compass on Erie, and bailed him, and some guys out last year on Erie whose GPS was not working in a snowstorm, and ended up down by 18 mile creek in Hamburg. My buddy followed them with because they had a Gps but thought they were going wrong way. Ended up getting back to Sturgeon Pt. parking lot with compass.

Many years ago (70's  I think) my two buddies and I were fishing Peach Lake (NY/CT border).  About mid-day an Ice Storm hit the area and we decided to get out of there.  By the time we reached shore, all of us were actually "coated" with ice.... we "cracked" as we walked !!  The worst was yet to come !!!
Arriving at our car, we found it was completely coated in about 1/4 inch of ice and we had to do some major banging and scraping to get the doors open and the windshield cleared.
The back road we parked on was a sheet of ice....driving was death-defying.  We finally had two guys walk alongside the car to keep it from sliding off the road, while the third guy drove.  The drive home was hair raising, to say the least !!

Early last January I was out on a local lake first ice. The majority of the lake had 4-6", but there was an area over the deep water that was still open which I reported about on here each day I was out.
On this particular day late in the afternoon, a few trucks pull into the launch area and 4 younger guys in there 20's unload their motorcycles. They fire them up and stay in fairly close tearing up the ice and making an oval track like they do most years.
For whatever the reason, two of them break away from the oval and start dragging each other full throttle straight up the lake....right at the open water just before dark.
I'm watching this in disbelief hoping like hell they see the water, but they just kept going faster and faster.
Finally, the guy on the left must have seen it coming and let off the throttle hooking his bike to the left and getting out of there just in time.
His buddy never let off the throttle, and in between me saying " Oh my God " all I could see was a huge fishtail of water going up in the air!
I called 911 immediately figuring he was dead for sure....he was out in 60' of water, deepest part of the lake about a half mile from the boat launch.
Next thing I noticed was his buddy who saw the water in time, drive over towards the other side of the open water and help his buddy to get on his motorcycle. Then they came rocketing back down the lake.
Call it dumb luck, or whatever, but when he hit the water on his bike, he got thrown over the handlebars and skipped off the open water onto the ice on the other side! Talk about luck....
Within 5 minutes after my call, there had to be at least 15 fire trucks, ambulances, Troopers, Sherriffs, EnCon, etc.
His brand new bike went to the bottom, and I think it sat there until Spring.
The icing on the cake was he was all pissed off at me for calling 911 like it was my fault.....
I just shook my head and told him he didn't how lucky he was that he wasn't on the bottom with his bike.

trapping on a small pond about a mile behind my house i fell through with hip waders on. very heavy when they filled up with water i thought i was a goner. every time id get back up on the ice id break right through again. ended up smashing the ice with my forearms all the way to shore bloody arms and all i was in survival mode it was nuts. emptied boots took clothes off and squeezed the water out of them and had to walk back to my house, including open field with 20mph winds. by the time i got back my whole body was stiff and i was shuffling my feet. thought that was my last day on earth

many years ago my father taught me this and it works!  if you fill your  hip waders with water when you get out DON'T TAKE THEM OFF IN THE  COLD!!!!  instead  lay on your  back  and lift your legs  yes it makes a cold butt  butt  the water in the boots will warm quick   you take them off your  temp  drops like a rock.....

15 winters ago, fishing with my black lab, cold, windy, and snowing, I start having a heart attack. As I realize whats happening, I decide I'm not going to leave my gear on the ice. I am the only one on the lake. So I gather my stuff, and start walking off the ice taking several breaks along the way. I remember saying to myself "you are in big trouble". I guess at the same time, I would'nt admit it was happening because I brought the dog home, even took a hot shower hoping it would go away, then finally left, walking past my girlfriends son saying "I gotta go". Then drove myself to the hospital. 8 days later, I was home pretty much unscathed. I took that winter off,  gave up hand augers and have been at it ever since.

About ten years ago, we were fishing on Braddocks Bay.  This older gentleman was sitting on his bucket a hundred or so yards away.  All the sudden we look over and see him fall to the ice.  I started running ver to him when I saw him stand up and start swearing and jumping up and down.  I walked over and asked him if he was OK.  He muttered to me that he was pissed off because he dropped his hearing aid down the hole.  If you looked down the hole, you could see it sitting on the bottom.  I felt terrible for the guy.

About 5 years ago my brothers and a friend and I were fishing a large unnamed lake in mid-March -- I was driving a Polaris Ranger and was heading back to the truck to get something -- unbeknownst to me, the lake currents had changed over the last couple years due to a new channel cut in a nearby stream that entered the lake, and the ice in the area I was driving was compromised from underneath.  Well, next thing you know the Ranger was dropping through the ice -- as it was going down, I dove out of it as far as I could and spread eagled myself on the ice -- it held, and I combat crawled for 50' or so, then stood up and started to walk -- immediately my one leg broke through the ice, and I was going down again, but I used my other leg to kick me forward, spread eagled again -- this time I combat crawled for more than 100' and was able to get to solid ice to return to my buddies, minus one Ranger -- fortunately, ice-out came early that year and I was able to hire a salvage team out of the Capital Region and we were able to locate and remove the Ranger all within a day -- I was a very lucky guy...!

One more scary incident dating back to the early 80s -- we were at our camp on the Vermont shore of Lake Champlain for an ice-fishing weekend -- we were going to have a card game that evening and a good friend of ours who lived across the lake was going to join us -- he started over the ice from the NY side on his Honda 3-Wheeler -- when he was about halfway across the lake, his headlight suddenly disappeared...!!  I grabbed a coil of rope and my brothers and I ran out to the center of the lake -- his machine had gone through a thin section of ice cover and was floating upside down with the balloon tires on it -- by the time we got there, he had gotten himself back on the ice by kicking off the floating ATV -- when he went over the handlebars, his forehead had broke the forward ice and he was bleeding like a stuck pig!  He was one tough guy though -- he had us tie the rope to him and he went back in the water to retrieve his ATV -- he held onto it, while we pulled him back out and then wrestled the machine back onto solid ice -- needless to say, his wife wasn't very happy when we got him back home all bloody and froze-up...!!

Not something you see all the time here, but at least 20 years ago I was jigging smelt on Lake Bomoseen in Vermont.
Went into the shanty before dark and came out 5-6 hours later when the sky was filled with northern lights.
It was very cold and clear.  The lights were red and moving all over like rays and hanging drapes.  They were around the
next night also. FM

been through the ice a few times , once over my head  (not a good time ) , had shantys blown down the lake in gale force winds , pulled a few people out and had a mink 2 times a muskrat and a otter all use my holes while fishing. had a small group of coyotes sneek up behind me before daylight to see what I was.

Ok guys let me set the scene. Honeoye Lake, late 70s.While ice fishing I had to GO, so I hoofed it back to what is now Sandybottom Park. Back then it wasn't built up like it is now just an old shed that fallen down, so I went behind it unzipped my snowmobile suit pulled it between my legs and did what I went there to do after the paper work I pulled my suit up and looked back and thought to myself damn there should've been more oh well. Then went back fishing for the day, walked around and talked to a few guys. Then on the way home with things warming up my father said " ok who #hit themself and I said I didn't I did it hours ago on shore. Then my brother saw it laying in my hood.

me and a buddy use to go to sandy pond a lot back in the 70,s/80,s and stay at the old wigwam hotel.rent a room above the bar, which was an experience in itself and fish all weekend.one day we left and decided to fish across the pond by the sand dunes/ lakeshore. I haven't been there in around 25 yrs. so some of my geo. descriptions could be off but this is what I remember. at dark a bad storm came in with blowing snow and whiteouts of hardly no visibility. it was bad.i use to pull a small jon boat with a towbar behind my old Polaris.a idea I got from going out of tripps at Oneida yrs ago. so anyhow we start back trying to keep the wind direction with what I thought would get me back to the wigwam. we had no compass.no cell phones or electronics back then.so we're going and going and I know I,m lost and getting nervous hopeing I hit shoreline somewhere before I hit the lake. I think that,s possible there. it,s dark and nasty and cold.all of sudden a ghost appears out in frnt of me and my budy is yelling in my ear for me to stop. like I wasn't going to stop ::)so I kid you not here's this guy alone walking around out there in a leather jacket and desert boots. couldn't believe it. tells us he owns a cottage over on the lakeshore and left just before dark when it was nice and was heading across the pond to the wigwam for some drinks and dinner. gives me a wind direction to stay on says it's close and could he catch a ride in the boat. sure go ahead. and we're going and going and finally my buddies yelling for me to stop. the guys trying to tell us something.he jumps off talks to the guy and comes back just about crying.he says he thinks the wind changed and doesn't have any idea where we are.and we're going and going I'm afraid this guy is going to be frozen solid by the time we get back.then a glow from a light on shore appears and that's where this guy came in handy. knew it was seber shores or Selkirk shores or something like that and if we just kept following the shoreline to the right we would make it back. and we did.

Some great stories !!!
I've been through the ice a few times, but mostly close to shore in less than waist deep water...except 1 time.
Way back, when I was married(1977) , I was up early, getting ready to head out and check my trapline on my way to work. My wife gets up say's she was going to need the van that day for laundry  and shopping. So I wait for her , and we head up the road. I park the van, put on my hip boots, and tell her i'll be back in about 10 minutes, gotta cross the pond to check a couple of sets....got halfway across and through I went to the top of my head. I remember that fridgid water literally took my breath away , and I could not even yell back to her for help....ice kept breaking as I tried to get out...finally did some kind of lift and barrel roll, and got out.
Ran, slipped and fell several times , tripped on logs, scrambled up the steep bank,  clawing my way for most of it, back to the van half froze. My wife frieked out when she saw me and I told her "drive to Hancock" as I climbed in the back of the van stripping down naked. Thankfully, in the back of the van were bags of our dirty laundry and towels...Got dried off and dry clothes on in record time.
When I got to work my boss said "are you OK " "You look like you seen a ghost"

I went through in the mid 70's. A pond down the street, about 300 yards from home, in weather like this, single digits. Only up to my chest. By the time I got home, I was frozen solid! My brother dragged me to the shower to thaw me out so I could get my clothes off! In the 80's fishing in Harriman, 2 people tried to come and see what we were doing. Roach kickers and high heels, fur coat, and fell on the ice! Never laughed so hard! The water level had dropped, and they couldn't get up! I live 45 minutes from New York City. Lol!

Don't know about this guy but many years ago we had a buddy of ours do the same thing. We were fishing on Oneida out of Tripps. He had one of those old Refrigerwear one piece suits on and didn't get the hood tucked out of the way because he was in a rush situation. He was just about to flip his hood unto his head when he smelled it just in time to avoid adding "insult to injury"!!

A more recent strange occurance on the ice was one that i'm sure a few Oneida die hards remember. ....I was on the ice off jewell a few years back,  when that unbelievably thick ground cloud marched down the ice and reduced visibility to zero. It was surreal,I didn't know what the heck was going on, as the cloud wall got closer and closer and closer, then finally enveloped us.
I've been in plenty of foggy conditions, but this was off the charts  the way it formed and rolled in on us.

1.  I was fishing Cranberry Pond back in the 90s.  It was a little slick, but I didn't think I needed creepers.  I was shuffling along carrying the minnow bucket, but I slipped so bad that it felt like my feet got pulled out from under me.  I went down, minnows went up.  I hit my elbow pretty hard.  So I am writhing on the ice in pain in a puddle of water with minnows flopping all around my head.  Must have been quite a site.  My Dad didn't know whether to laugh or be concerned.  I still have the bone chips in my elbow (can't really lean on that elbow to this day).

2.  I fished Long Pond late one afternoon by myself, just a few yards from the road.  Shortly after I arrived, everyone else left (fishing wasn't so good).  Then, just before sunset, fishing turned on and I was catching perch left and right, and I had the place all to myself.  If that wasn't great enough, a van pulls up and 3-4 attractive young women come out to tal k to me to see what I was doing.  They were travelling nurses from the University of Rochester.  They were all from Europe.  I felt like I was in a Budweiser commercial!  The only thing missing was the beer truck.

Nope, but don't live too far from you. I was given the name One Bucket because Two Bucket Mike was already taken by a Mike C. who also went by Indian Mike.
We did a few trips up to Oneida in the Good Ole Days in the 70s. Getting too old to stray far from home these days.

That was back in the 90s, before I met my wife!

When I met her, she was a grad student at the U of R too.  I met her at a party of Physical Therapy grad students (my friends and I were living in an apartment above them).  I tell my friends, if you want to find a woman, go to those parties!  We walked in and there were about 30 women and 5 guys.  I like those odds! ;D

My friend was there too, and said sparks were jumping off his eyeglasses that day!
There was lots of  electricity in that ground cloud. I could feel the hair on my neck and head trying to stand up...I put my jigging rod down on the ice,and got away from my shanty too. I wanted to get to shore, but I was on foot and to far out, near the deep 40 foot drop. So just rode it out and stood there in awe of the spectacle .

I personally did not get any pictures(always carry a camera now)..but a few guy's got some great shots of it coming down the lake.I can't remember who posted the pics...but they were really good.

I have two...

My first shanty (Clam 2000) was known for icing up if you took it out one day and neglected to set it up that night to dry. It was a chore getting those poles to extend the next day. I had it partially up on Blind Sodus with two heaters going inside. My rear end hit the prop pole and the shanty fell on top of the heater. I was inside and it was on fire. It did a number on the shanty...thankfully they were only going for $150 back then.

The second, and much more serious, was when I went through the ice with my four wheeler. My babysitter's son was on the back and we just happened to stop over an iced-over gas hole on Oneida Lake. The left two tires settled and I didn't think much of it since I figured I had just broken through the crust. Well, I looked over the edge and that is when the hole opened up. We were treading water in 20 ft of water before we knew it. We both managed to scramble out and had a long, cold (12 degrees and breezy) mile walk back to Williams Beach. We recovered everything except my Fish TV a few days later. Many thanks to the awesome people on here and my buddies John and Mitch who offered assistance with everything.

I was fishing a favorite lake of mine back in Wisconsin about 15 years ago.  It was early December and I had about 4, maybe 5” of ice.  Much to my disbelief, a pick-up truck pulls up next to me, and asks, “How much ice you got?”  I think the driver was a bit conflicted because I was scrambling to put as much distance between him and me, as I was lobbing every nasty insult I could think of at him.  At first it looked like he wanted to rip my head off, but then...I think he realized he was in a full size truck, on thin ice.  The look on his face at that moment was priceless.

On a sunny day, icefishing the Allegany River, had a few tip-ups out. Sitting on my bucket jigging for crappie, and a muskrat pops up out of the hole! Not sure who was surprised the most, but we both had that deer in the headlight look!

One other time, fishing with my father on Silver Lake. He always took a little bottle of Black Berry Brandy with him in his coat pocket. After taking his first swig of the day, he capped it, and attempted to place it back in his pocket.  SPLASH!  Down the whole it went!  I was using an underwater camera at the time, so I turned the camera a little, pointed to the screen, and witnessed a grown man cry!!!    Miss ya dad!

3 things;

1) seeing the fish I just caught and iced starting to walk away (mudpuppie)

2) one evening fishing for the after dark bite, got caught in a rare winter thunderstorm on the lake, lightening strikes too close for comfort, and with the fog rolling in, very eerie.

3) years before portable shelters, I used to use a small tent.  One windy day, I watched the tent and what gear I had inside go rolling end over end down the ice.

Not got any real good ones of my own, other than a couple break throughs in thigh high water. But i remember reading about some jack wagon in minnesota who took his brand new truck on the ice and his bird dog. They listed him as an ice fisherman in the news but i doubt it. Any how he was lighting half sticks of dynamite and throwing them to blow holes in the ice. His bird dog jumbed out of truck to retrieve what he was throwing. As a good dog would do. As the dog runs back toward him with said lit stick he panicked and shot dog with birdshot. Poor dog didnt know what to do and hid under truck. Kaboom. New truck gone and even worse the poor dog. Very sad story i love my dogs. Needless to say guy recieved plenty of tickets and hopefully jail time. Does anyone ever remember hearing this.

Actually i do got one of mine. First trip ever to chaumont bay with 3 buddies, one of them being a heavier guy was in my shanty. We were crushing the perch and flags flyin like crazy on the pike. The wind picked up big and my buddy jumped out of shanty to get flag. Next thing i know my hole dissapears as well as my rod. Im now flying down the lake at what felt like mach 1. Im trying to get to the door but im spinning. Was late ice and was super slick. I look out and seen i was headed toward a huge open water spot. I decide to go for it and leap out of shanty go spread eagle and grab rope of shanty all in one motion. Finally hit a rough patch a couple of feet later and came to a hault. Prob 50ft shy of open water. I bashed my knee up bad, blood filled my boot. Chipeed the bone and still cant kneel with all my weight at a certain angle. I was about 200 yards from where i started and had to walk back to the hot bite and fish through the pain. Plus mile and a half to shore later on. Cant believe this slipped my mind.

1) Fishing w/ my dad and one of my buddies late in the season on Cayuga lake. The march temps had warmed all of the snow and the lake was like a mirror, with many, big random puddles. I sat in my Clam while the other two jigged outside. It was breezy that day but not too bad - I did not bother to anchor down. As I'm jigging away, a big gust comes up and I watch my jigging hole go zooming out from under the shanty, eating all of my line and then breaking me off. As I'm blowing down the lake at a good rate of speed, I stand in the door way and watch the shorelines go by. The shanty starts to spin and I see my buddy running down the lake after me. I am helpless at this point, just along for the ride. My buddy hits one puddle, does and amazing one boot slide and stays up right. He keeps trucking and hits a second puddle and it happens...He goes down hard and not only with a big thud, but with a big splash. He was soaked from head to toe. I slid about 200 feet and then came to a gentle stop. What a ride...
2) Watched - well I didn't watch, but I was there - my buddy (a vegetarian) poop on the middle of the lake with no cover. He always has to poop. I bet the next guy that came across that said, "that must have been one huge goose."

3) Fishing for an hour or so w/ my cousin, both of us on buckets jigging away and he says to me, "Hey, you know what sucks? There's yellow stuff all around me." Neither of us had taken a leak and there were guys on that spot the day before...

1993, fishing in Wabasha, MN - my friend (a grumpy old guy named Max) got angry with me cause he thought I stole a girl he liked. She had just moved on our street recently and had gotten both of our attention. Anyway, Max thought she liked him and he took her to dinner. Soon after, she had me over for dinner and (for me) some long missed, bedroom desert afterwards. When Max found out, he got so angry with me that he rammed his truck into my shed, while I was jigging in it, and pushed it all the way towards the unsafe ice. I managed to jump out just in time to see it sink.

Don't worry.  No dogs were harmed in the making of this story.  It is an urban legend that was making the rounds on the internet some time ago (see: http://www.snopes.com/critters/cruelty/dynamite.asp).

A few more:

1.  A few years ago we were fishing in Wilson Harbor on a very windy day.  One particular strong gust blew my tip-up out of the hole and sent it flying down the ice.  I started chasing after it, as it was heading towards the open water.  My fishing partners were laughing and cheering me on, and I was able to make a dive and catch it before it got to the open water.

2.  Last year we were fishing at Cranberry Pond, and is often the case, we were joined by some ice boats sailing their way around the lake.  We heard what sounded like a crash or muffled explosion off in the distance.  Didn't think much of it at first, but turned around a minute or two later and saw that one of those ice boats was zipping along the ice, and hit an open patch of water.  They hit it so hard, that it actually shattered and splintered their boat, and the guy went in the drink.  His buddies helped him get out and back to shore.  On our way out, we saw splintered pieces of wood tens of yards away from the open hole.  He must have really been flying when he nailed that hole.

3.  The biggest thing I ever caught ice fishing was a black lab.  I was jigging on a small pond when a walker and his dog came out.  His dog ran right up to me and under my line and then took off, pulling my line out of the hole and burying my jig in his fur.  I would have loved a new dog, but sadly he was out of season.

Ice fishing out of Port Clinton, Ohio one year we had a coast guard helicopter land on the ice a few 100 yards from us and motioned to us to come over. The down wash from the blades made us crawl to the copter.  They told us we had to leave your gear and go with them now, because there was a large opening between us and the shore.  We said no and went back to our set-up.  They lifted off and hovered over us and using the loud speaker said we could not stay.  We did not feel any ice movement earlier or  see any shove in the distance so we kept fishing.   They got so close to us that the backwash from the blades destroyed our set-up and we decided to start in on our own.   They kept flying along side saying stop there is open water ahead.  Well, soon enough we saw nothing  but open water and white caps at least 1/4 mile split on 30" of ice.  We looked along the split and saw a bunch of people off in the distance so we started toward them.   When we got to them the ice was only opened about 10-12 feet and  there were at least 25 groups of fishermen with all kind of machines and gear.   One guy said I can skim across that narrow split and he tried but his skis on the snowmobile hit the edge on the other side and stopped his sled.   Snowmobile and dog sled with all his gear went to the bottom, the coast guard throw him a life ring and pulled him out.  All other fishermen instantly shout  off their machines and the coast guard started moving fishermen across the split with a hovercraft and the helicopter.  All machines and gear was left behind and we walked the last 1/2mile to shore.  Once on shore a few local guys said they were going to get a few 2X12X16' planks and use them to span the split.  The coast guard said the 1st recuse was free but if they have to come out and get any of us a 2nd time it would cost us.  Everyone pitched in and helped.   We slide 6 planks doubled up over the split and dragged each machine by ropes across the planks back to the safe side.  It took quit a few hours to move all the machines huts and dog sled but we got everything across.  And as I said earlier, the ice was 30" thick.  I do know one thing I will never go out on lake Erie with the wind in my back.

One year my brother and I were fishing in his shanty when all of a sudden flames shot out the woodstove door filling the shanty with smoke and soot. We had a chimney fire in the shanty  :woot: ! We dove out  the door and I took the following pictures. Luckily it did not catch the shanty on fire but we did have disassemble the stovepipe and clean it in the pouring rain. Everything in the shanty ,including us, was covered with soot and creosote. Just a friendly reminder to shanty owners with woodstoves, clean those stovepipes!

I can relate all of us going thru the ice. I believe it is like getting Christianed to hard water fishing. Yes I went thru. My deceased brother was a die harded fishermen that lived in Rochester NY. I always traveled from Buffalo to his house after work on a Friday and we would fish Saturday and Sunday. One Saturday we fished Cranberry Pond and it was slow. So he said let's check out the other ponds. We were passing Long Pong and he said lets try it after he mentioned nobody has been on it yet. We unloaded our sleds, jumped the guard rail and headed out. Not thinking to spud check the thickness we walked. We got about 75 to 100 yards from shore, he was out in front of me and me walking in his tracks, I went thru to my neck. Mind you he is short and built with me being talk and a little heavier. I remember he was to busy busting a gut rather than throwing me a rope to get my fat butt on the top side. I managed to get out and I ran to the truck. Soaking wet cold, teeth chattering, my gear still out there and he walks up and offers me a beer. Took a while to forgive him but now I laugh about it. LOVE AND MISS YA BRO..............

i had tip ups fly out of the hole and the hook would catch on the edge of the hole and the tip up would fly across the ice until it was spooled.
I hope you can look back on that now and laugh.  That's pretty funny!

A few years ago, someone posted a story of a tip-up blowing out of the hole with a pickerel on the end of the line.  That's awesome!  An automatic tip-up, catches its own fish!

Many thanks to the awesome peo,ple on here and my buddies John and Mitch who offered assistance with everything.

Forgot to mention...if you're wondering about my screen name, reference story #1 :)

So back when I was in college I used to work at Apps (Oneida Lake) on the weekends and on breaks. There was another guy that helped out back then, think his name was Chris. Anyway, this day I was telling him about what gasholes were and how sometimes they were exposed and sometimes they weren't.

Later that day we headed out on the 4 wheeler towing Ricks big hauler (big trailer on skis from hauling shanties and people). We were planning on moving a couple of the shanties. It was snowing decent so we were having a tough time finding the shanties out in the middle of the lake. The ice was mostly bare with some blowing snow. Chris was driving and I was on the back facing forward. All of a sudden we come to a dead stop and get tossed off the wheeler and we slide across the glare ice. I look back and the hauler had broke through and caught a ski under the ice. The 4 wheeler was still up on the ice. I remember looking at Chris and saying, "now that is what a gashole looks like!!!".

We quickly got the hauler unhooked and got the 4 wheeler away from the gashole. The hauler was still sitting upright and stuck on the ice. So we headed back in and got my dad and Rick and some ropes and winches. We get back out there and the hauler was gone. It must have broke loose and sunk. We lost a power auger as well that was in the hauler.

Rick took it pretty well, at least we didn't lose the 4 wheeler too. We drank quite a few fish tank PBRs that night.

I was on silver lake in Wyoming county a few years back.  Ice was perfect no snow at all so I figured it was a good opportunity to walk a ways to try some new spots since the drag was so easy.  I had a cabi style shanty so I unfolded it got set up snd began fishing.  After an hour or so I saw the sun was now gone and an ominous dark cloud was coming.  I thought nothing of it but soon the wind picked up and I began to slowly slide until my hole had disappeared.  I quickly realized what was happening but too late.  When I opened the door to break down my hut I created a wind sail and I began moving quickly.  I thought quickly and decided if I dove out of the hut but held on it couldn't possibly drag me.  Wrong my hut was cruising down the lake with me holding on dragging behind it.  I had to wait till I reached shore a good 1/4 mile down the lake.  Folks having their morning coffee got a show that day.

One of the weirdest things happened a few years ago on one of the small Madison county lakes.  It was late winter and there was very little snow, and we were in the middle of a warm spell. The lake level had dropped quite a bit and we had to cross about 10-20 yards of lake bottom to get to the ice.  As we reached the ice you could see black things crawling slowly on the ice every 10-15 yards.  Our end of the lake was covered in crawfish that must have found themelves awake and high and dry and tried to make it back to the water.  I picked 25-30 of them and put them in my bucket with some water, and put a couple on tip-ups. No luck so I put the rest back in the lake.  Never saw that happen before or after and I've been ice fishing for about 50 years. My dad was with me and he had never seen that either.   The crows and sea gull had a feast that year for a couple days.

I was on Oneida Lake with a work mate 1 year and had walked a long way out when storm hit - neither one of us were that familiar with the lake and we couldn't see shore in any direction so we packed up all our gear and sat there till there was a slight break and we could see shore and high tailed it back.

Had a plane take off right on our tip-ups last year on Erieville res. - that might have been the only flags we got all day - haha.

Fell in once almost up to my waist on my way on the ice - minnows flying everywhere - picked everything up and fished for 3 1/2 hours
 - left when I knew I was wiggling my toes but couldn't feel them - took the whole ride home with the heat cranking to start to get some feeling back in them.

Good times !

That's awesome. Would have joined the gulls and made them a feast for myself!

Chief10point, your story sent chills up my old spine. I would be changed for life no doubt. My story is shorter but more of a **censored** moment. I was walking out on the west end of dunham island on onieda lake where there was much sled and wheeler traffic and was following the tracks as I believed that was the safest route. WRONG. I was suddenly 4 feet shorter with my arms instinctively straight out. I climbed out of the hole with a little help and of course being an intelligent and logical man, I fished for three hours. The perch bite was on!!!!!

A good day of early ice fishing on Raquette Lake Dec. 2014 - pouring rain and so windy the tip-ups would blow out of the hole , partially helped along by the toilet bowl action of a lot of water on top of the ice.  We picked up just in time that day to save our tip-ups from going down the enlarged holes from the toilet action.  However the walk off was awesome - pitch black outside with a full moon and floating sleds.

However the walk off was awesome - pitch black outside with a full moon and floating sleds.

years  ago  we  were  on a  crappie night bite in fulton  new York  and  it  started raining and  I mean raining  where  were  were  set up was  fine  but  we liked toward  shore and  it looked  wet ... walked   all the  way  in water  that  was half  way up our lacrosses  and  shantys floating ...then on the  way  back in we  realized  ...we can't  see any holes!  thank  goodness  it wasn't real  windy  or  cold .  but It was a bit  spooky

wouldn't say it was strange or scary but had a small plane land on the ice 100yds away, pilot then got out walked over and asked how the fishing was. ( Lake Erie) eastern basin.

A few years back, 2 guys stopped and yelled from shore and asked how thick ice was. We told them it was 6" and safe to come out. They went back to their car and got a big bag of rock salt and started to throw it out on the ice. We asked them what they were doing and they said (no lie) they were melting the ice to throw a couple of lines in the open water.
We still laugh about this to this day.

Great thread some crazy stories.  I just got into ice fishin thanks to my buddy Smokinss on here and now im hooked!  So i dont have any good ice fishing stories yet but I have a crazy ice story none the less.

My buddy and I raced quads for a while and his camp over near Fayville Rd on the Sacandaga lake so we studded them up and ripped around the lake all the time.   One winter it was blue bird sky's and we were riding all day, went over to Lanzies to hang out at the drag strip.   Coming from the north we see clouds coming and knew a storm was on its way down.   So we decided we need to get back to camp which is across the widest part of the lake but dead east so its not that bad just head straight.

Now if you guys know this lake its dangerous on a normal day with all the heaves everywhere so you have to be very careful riding across the lake.   We got about half way across when the snow picked up and the storm hit us, came in way faster than we thought it would. We could see the wall of whiteout coming and we were about smack dead in the center of the lake.   Snow hit and we couldn't see eachother 5 feet apart, just hear the motors.  we stopped and decided to stick together in 2nd gear and be careful not to lose eachother and just head for land and then figure out where we are from there.   Every 5 minutes we would hear a sled coming at a suicidal pace and buzz past us probably no more than 20-30 feet away.  It was sketchy.   We rode and rode and must have slowly turned to the left a bit because we couldn't find land, then all of a sudden we almost ran straight into one of the concrete pillars to the Edinburgh bridge!  about 8-9 miles away from where we hit the storm and we over shot the camp by 6 miles! somehow we made a long sweeping 8 mile arc and never saw land.   We got turned around and followed the shore line, and not more than 1 mile back into the crawl home I hit reserve on my machine, then he hit reserve on his.   we made it back to camp just as the storm started to lift and both ran out of gas when we hit the beach at the camp.

thats all i got sofar but I am sure ill have some nutty stuff to post about the more i get out there.  My name isnt krazykid for nothing! lol
