I usually keep from 13'' up.  Don't need to keep as many that way 8)  Love it when you can go home with only a half dozen perch 13"-18" inchers and call it a meal.

Wishin I read this post.... caught about a dozen 7 - 9, what a pain to clean for the amount of meat.  I'm going 10" & up next time with a limit.

Hey gumpy2 I had not problem nor did I doubt the 18" measurement. I just figured your ruler had the 1st 3 or 4 inches broke off. By the way sorry to hear about the trout but we won't hold it against you.

I would like to say 9" and up but the lake i fish alot is stunted and there are literally millions around 7 1/2-8 "   I keep those trying to help the fishery out  and the meat tastes just as good just a little more work for a meal.  I am not saying that my limit is made up entirely of 71/2-8" perch i do get some big ones usually in a 50 fish limit 20-25 are the dinks i speak of   and usually a few 10 1/2 11" . My 6 yr old son has snuck much smaller ones in the bucket before and they taste fine just watch those fingers ;D

I'm with you on that on. Sometimes it's not a bad idea to take some of the runts makes more room for the slabs. Maybe even need to let some of the fat females go. I'll tell you what you let the pigs go. I'll let you know how they tasted. ;D

You can not take out too many perch, no matter what size. The biomass of a lake determines how many perch a lake can support. You will have a lot of little ones or many large ones, it is the poundage that the lake can support that you have. Your failure to harvest enough perch causes the perch growth rate to be stunted down. Old time regulations like numbers and size are not the way to go. Total weight harvested is a good control on the quality of the fishery. Failure to harvest enough perch results in a failure to recruit new classes of other fish like walleye. The uncontrolled perch masses feed on the new hatches of walleye fry and fingerlings resulting in poor recruitment of new year classes. Blame the do gooders who want size and number limits on perch fishing when the walleye and bass fishing collapse. When you have good walleye classes, a lot of small perch are forage and the perch that are left grow to goodsized eaters faster because the competition for the forage is managed. Do not let some do gooders screw up a good lake with unnecessary limits because they claim it is good "conservation" when it is poor stewardship of the waters.
You can not take too many perch, unless you can not clean them, give them to your friends and neighbors to clean and cook. The more perch you take, the faster and bigger the rest  will grow. The walleyes and bass will survive from fry to fingerlings.

The Lake I fish (most) is also stunted, I do get usually 5 or 6,  8+ inchers with the rest being 6 1/2 to 7/12
with that being said I usually only go home with 12-15 fish........ :'(

The Lake is only 5 miles down the road so it's hard to go other places not to mention the Pike fishing is excellent.  I set tip-ps out then jig while I waite for the pike...
