Title: Missing the ice already. Central Iowa
Post by: teamhardcorefishing_cc on Dec 16, 2014, 10:44 AM
Since I didn't have anything going on today I went out to check on ice conditions.  Everything is open. The warm weather the last few days and rain yesterday killed the ice. :'( Man they go fast. Just last week I got into a pile of 9 inch gills and 10 inch crappies. Best bluegill day on the ice ever. Kept 23. Wishing mother nature would give back the ice already.

Is there any fishable ice within an hour of Iowa City?  We're headed that way this weekend to visit family.  I'll bring the minimum essentials if there's 3"+.

There's a shaded spot on my favorite lake (in nw IA) that didn't Thaw.  I should be back on that soon. It was as thick as 6" before the warm up.

I'm heading back to my hometown of Madrid over Xmas break (25th and 26th) and was wondering if there is any ice left on local ponds/lakes (like Big Creek)? And if you think any bodies of water in area will have fishable ice?
I'm hoping to get out and fish on the 26th.
we don't have any fishable ice left in SW Iowa as of now--and it doesn't look like any forming in near future with temps in high 30's and low 40's.
thanks

I don't have any hope in central Iowa this season >:(.  Looked at the extended forecast, to many ups and downs in the temperatures.

We had a lot of skim ice around IC by Thursday, but what isn't already gone will be after the rain tomorrow. Temps start to look better by the end of the week.

January and February are still ahead. We'll have some good ice yet this winter.

With gas around 2.00 guess I will drive north to find good ice if mother nature does not cooperate.

I will be doing the same. Looks like central Iowa is done until mid January.

You should check the rivers the boys and I got on some crappie yesterday. First time I ever fished the river in December. I'd rather be ice fishing but long poles are better than no poles.

Might have to take you up on that. There's nothing for me around here in Newton.
