Title: 2016/2017 Lake Louise reports
Post by: Akhardwater on Nov 03, 2016, 12:07 PM
Let's get this year rolling.  From the looks of the web cam the ice has been locked up to at least army point now for over a week and a half.  It sounds like another forum member was able to walk to army point and reported 4 inches of ice with possible open water out in the main lake.  Good luck to everyone this year.

7-9" in Larson Bay.  Fishing is decent ;D

Was out on the ice Saturday. I too found the ice to be about 7" thick. Plenty of 22-23 inchers, but no big hook ups.

How far did you venture out from shore still finding 7'' of ice?

I'm guessing with the temps they've been having there should be close to ten inches by the weekend.  I think Im going to drag the shack out week after next.

It's looking good, not super cold, but no snow and it's been well below freezing the last few weeks.

I ventured about 40 yards and it was still about 7 inches.

Thinking about heading up this next weekend and putting the shack out.  Any body punch holes through the ice this weekend?  I figure there should be enough ice around the shorelines, but don't plan on venturing all over the lake.

Iced and a couple others said there was a suburban towing a trailer with four wheelers that drove out to Larson bay.  I think I'm heading up Thursday to drag the shack out they said there was 9 inches of ice with pressure ridges all around the islands.  Seems just a little sketchy to be driving on the lake this early.

Parts of the lake just froze last week.   Won't be long before someone goes through.

Oh I know the complete lack of common sense is going to get someone killed.  Has anyone been over to Susitna yet.  I know it generally freezes before Louise.  When we were there duck hunting in October all the protected bays had at least 5 inches.

You mentioned a webcam of the lake. Do you have a link or info so I can do a Google search? All the cams I can find aren't pointing at the lake.

Yes you can.  It's best to pay for the whole season just in case he's not around when you are there.  I don't know what this years prices are.

Thanks, I thought we could.

I had talked to him about a year long pass. I was going to keep an ice house at his place throughout the summer. I think he said that was $300. This was last spring though.

Haha, I have a few friends with places on Lake Louise, as well as friends of friends, so that is ultimately what I am hoping for. I do like the security of having it at the lodge though. Knowing someone is usually around.

I will be watching this thread all year, as well as contributing some brag posts (hopefully) :)

I am craving some LL updates! I have a trip planned on Dec 10th. I have a family friend who has a nice cabin on one of the islands I will be staying in. Much nicer option than the bringing the Arctic Oven out.

I'm still on the ice coming home wend.  Lots of caribou around had two buddy's come up this weekend and they each got one in like 20 minutes.  Now I'm just watching their gut piles in hopes a wolf comes out.

Pretty sure it's about 20" now but I forgot my ladle, so what do I know.  Fishing is okay, no pigs but steady action.
Got fuel from the lodge today, Jon said they are there most days if you need anything.

Heavy snow has been holding off for years now...wondering when we are going to get a real winter.  It is going to be -30 this next week up there, so ice will be ah makin.

Yup now we just need a bunch of snow to keep the trucks off the ice, but not before I move my shack it's kind of in an overflowy spot.

Yup. -30 certainly is going to keep the snow away Jiggenfrog but as you said......makin ice.  Great idea Akhardwater, get that shack moved out of there and in a prime spot so I can come join ya.

I caught my first laker ever yesterday. 2 of us went and drove out on the ice I think we were near Larson bay.  We each caught 2 fish in 20-30 ft of water. Mine was small to medium, his was a bit larger. I definitely want to go back some day. I will try to post a pic but I don't know how to. We got there just before the cold snap.

Does anyone have any advice on catching whitefish through the ice? I had some success last summer with dry flies, but i've yet to catch one through the ice. What should I be looking for as far as structure, depth, etc. And what jigs are effective in the lake Louise area?

Ask AKhardwater.  I'm pretty sure he knows.

Post by: Akhardwater on Dec 12, 2016, 10:12 PM
Right now whitefish is more precious than gold so if you can figure out those little buggers let us know.  There's only a certain time of year I'm able to catch them with any regularity and I got skunked last year.  I've tried everything during this time of year and have had no real success.  I mark them all the time when chasing lakers but can't bring myself to fish for them cause lakers take priority.  Maybe setup in shallow water and spear them.

Post by: Bushwhack Jack on Dec 12, 2016, 11:57 PM
Has anybody ever tried to go up to the Chatanika river in the fall time and tried to spear them?  I heard there is a personal use spear fishery up there some time in the fall (like sept-october maybe???).  Anyhow, I wonder if that might be a good place to try to stock up with whitefish for bait.

Went up this last weekend, it never got warmed than -20F. We stayed in the Arctic Oven, and fished out of the Vestibule. It worked alright, but in -30F the holes were constantly freezing up. I feel like anything -10F and warmer it would be perfect.

I did lose my auger bit on my 3rd hole. The bolt popped out while drilling and i didn't notice. After I finished the hole, I pulled up the power head with no bit attached. That was an awful feeling. It is currently sitting at the bottom of Lake Louise lol.

We managed only 1 laker, 27". We marked quite a bit, but never could get them to strike. We were using Jigs and herring for the most part. Not having an auger really limited us, but we managed to stay warm and fish next to a wood stove haha.

As far as whitefish are concerned, Ive heard from people who catch whitefish that just putting an egg or piece of shrimp on a small pole on a JawJacker or something is how to catch them. I will say though, I have done that almost everytime I have gone out, and never got one......

Post by: kwackkillncrew on Dec 13, 2016, 04:39 PM
sorry to hear about the auger bit! had that same thing almost happen to use with the auger bit.  Now we just throw a piece of electrical tape around the bolt.
Title: Re: 2016/2017 Lake Louise reports
Post by: Akhardwater on Dec 13, 2016, 06:36 PM
Did you guys run into any overflow I'd imagine with those temps that crap will start poping up.  Also has there been any new snow.  Sorry to hear about your bit that really sucks.  If you know exactly where it is you might be able to get it back with a high strength magnet.  I've had the bolt pop out on me before to and like kwack said a piece of electrical tape works wonders.
Title: Re: 2016/2017 Lake Louise reports
Post by: DannerAK on Dec 13, 2016, 07:37 PM
I'm also interested in current overflow conditions out there. An aquaview or any type of underwater camera could help with locating and recovering your auger blade. Use heavy line or thin rope and don't use a rod to try and reel it up. Don't ask how I know such things...
Title: Re: 2016/2017 Lake Louise reports
Post by: jiggenfrogs on Dec 13, 2016, 10:20 PM
We need snow to have overflow and we have a complete lack of it so I would be shocked to see any overflow.  With the cold snap it should be locked up tight with good going.
Title: Re: 2016/2017 Lake Louise reports
Post by: J2theD on Dec 14, 2016, 02:37 PM
There was no overflow anywhere that I saw. Only 6" of snow maybe. I didn't cruise around the lake much due to the extreme cold.

I have thought about doing the heavy magnet technique. I know exactly where it is at. And it is standing straight up and down on the bottom. I dropped my camera down to look at it. I have a guy who is going to sell me a 10" bit so I can fish in the meantime, but I think I am going to try to get it back this winter :)

I would for sure.  How much water?  Punch four holes and chip out to make one big hole and you should have no problem getting it back.

The magnet has been purchased on Amazon. Next time I head out (probably right after New Years) I am going to try to get it. This is a super strong magnet, so I am optimistic. I will post that update on here as well :)

Spent December 16-18TH OF December on crosswinds lake, rode in from lake louise,  a buddy and I did very well on lakers and burbot, we lost count on how many fish we caught and released, lots of fish between 22-28 inch and few that were around 12-14 pounds,  the trail was rough and slow going but well worth it,   ice was 15 inches thick we were surprised,   met bushwhack jack on the way out, cool dude, nice meeting you man,     fish on!! @)

I will be heading up for a day trip Monday. The wife wants to do some fireworks with the family on Memory lake New years Eve so it will have to be a day trip. I don't know if I will make it to Susitna the the chain case on the snow machine might have a problem form the trip to Crosswinds, there is a lot of vibration coming from the track. I am hopeful that it is just ice build.

seen a lot of posts on lake louise on facebook,  the lake is getting fished pretty hard, I seen over 14 fish over 15 pounds being kept, I find it pretty rediclous. I seen theres been a few guided trips out there now,  just wanted to let everyone know who likes to fish lake louise I find it as a conern, would be nice to see more catch and release of the big boys, I know most of the people on here do it,  pretty soon we will have to find another lake to fish!

Yeah it's pretty sad.  I went to the public access on sat to get something out of my truck and there were three trucks parked on the ice right there at the public access.  Somebody put a white hardside with no reflectors right next to the trail 200 yards from shore so be careful coming on to the lake not to run into it.  I'm still a big fan of catch and keep your one fish and you have to stop fishing. Treat it just like king fishing one and done.   I would also like to see barbless hooks in the refs as well.

Hey Wes when you see stuff like that on spacebook you should say something.  It's possible that those people are just ignorant and don't know any better.  I don't think the guiding will last very long especially if they are keeping fish, once the lake gets some more snow and starts getting overflowy that should hopefully keep the lazy truck fisherman off the lake.  Fish and game will eventually just shut the lake down to winter fishing if it gets to bad.

I think you'd have to join to see it.  It's just a bunch of folks sharing photos and asking for advice.  Of course a few know it alls, brand loyal fan boys and egos can ruin it.  Any mention of CNR or call out on fish handling and it goes south real quick too.

Maybe if someone explains to them nicely that lake trout are highly susceptible to over harvest.  I know some people are just ignorant and once they are educated they might make better decisions.  Although some people are just selfish and they can't accept any advice no matter how nice you are.  I wouldn't mind seeing these Facebook pages as well.

Alaskan ice fishing and open water seems like a popular one right now, there's a lot of them though, that's the only one I'm actually a member of, the cover photo says it all.

We tried explaining to them last year how overharvest will destroy the lake but they just kept saying that we were trying to keep people from fishing "our" lake.  We also tried to explain to them how Louise is not a lake to be driving trucks on and that got the majority of us banned from their stupid site.  You can't argue with stupid people they'll just drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Sounds like Kurt out at crosswinds. I got told multiple times that it was closed to sport fishing because he had "rights". Sucks he didn't get busted with the rest of his friends. He boasted about all the bears he had piled at the end of "his" runway.

I am a member of that ice fishing group, and have fished with some of them, even at Lake Louise. I have never ever seen a Lake Trout kept. The guys I fished with, like me, refuse to keep a lake trout. We only CnR. The occasional burbot gets kept obviously, but the guys I fished with from that group understand that these lakers are 30+ years old and can be over fished easily.

There are obviously some hot heads in the group as well, that'll be the case whenever there is a group of 1500+ people. But please don't think the majority are like that. Many are just helping sharing tips/tricks, helping other people who are new the sport, or, and probably the vast majority, just showing pictures. I know members from this site and Alaska Outdoor forums clash with them, but I am apart of all 3 communities and can promise you they aren't quite as bad as people make them out to be.

Not to open a can of worms, but the thing I would worry about at Lake Louise regarding the fishery are some of the Russian (that's what the locals told me) set netters....

Anyways, I will be back up there this Thursday to Sunday, so if you see an Arctic Oven on the lake, feel free to say hi :)

I agree with you that the majority of the FB guys are CnR oriented and that's good we need more people with that mind set.  The problem I have is their lack of respect for the land and the lake Louise community.  The lake Louise community spends allot of money every year to groom and maintain trails so they can safely haul freight to there cabins and transport their family's to and from.  Last year we warned those guys not to drive their trucks and wheelers on the lake because it was a safety hazard and they laughed at us and proceeded to tear up the trails.  I know of two people that rolled freight sleds damaging their materials and one guy was injured all because some jerk tore up the trails with a truck, I'm sure there were other incidents I didn't hear about.  One of the guys on there put his truck though the ice and then proceeded to bad mouth lake Louise lodge on social media because they wouldn't drive their own vehicles on the lake to pull them out, John even warned the guy before he drove out on the lake.  Now I'm sure it's not all the guys on there but a few bad apples will ruin it for everyone and I'm not kidding when I say that fish and game will simply shut down the winter fishery.  Back in the 90s when they used to plow roads on the lake the burbot fishery was almost wiped out so fish and game shut down all burbot fishing for something like ten years.

I agree about driving the trucks. Once the trails are marked out, groomed, etc., then it is common sense/courtesy not to drive through them. Best thing that can happen is heavy snowfall, but the last couple years have allowed people to drive vehicles all winter.

I just wanted to bring up the C&R. Every buddy I bring with me fishing I tell them before we go, "you will not keep a laker or rainbow, regardless of regs." I offer up salmon or halibut from my freezer if they really want the meat. I plan on buying property up there in the not-so-distant future and I want my children and grandchildren to have the same experiences I do out there.

I have an unrelated question though...What are all of the hard side shanties fishing for at the end of Susitna Lake, right before the slough to Louise? Burbot? Every year I see quite a few shacks concentrated in that spot and wondered what they were going for...

And for the record, the cover photo got blasted by many members for the lady grabbing the gill plates on the fish (Harding Lake Laker). It was released, she apologized, admitted it was a mistake. Just a disclaimer before people assume all 1900+ members handle fish like that.

From the Wolf Pack who's responsible for the trail and grooming.

"The January 7th Work party has been canceled. Over the Christmas & New year’s break several volunteers helped mark the lake trails. Special Thanks to all who helped, Harry Holt, Barry & Wendy Simpson, John Hicks, Pete Probasco, Eric Olson,  Jim Davis & his friend Elliot, and Bill Fair.

We'll continue the next week or so to get the map signs out at the intersections and groom if we can get the pickups and SUV's will quit driving down the snow machine trails. Please pass the word that driving vehicles on the snow machine trails is unacceptable and dangerous for snow machiner’s."

Anytime I'm at the lodge I always try to donate some money to the groomer fund.  It's real expensive to put gas in that thing they not only groom the lake but all the surrounding trails as well.  It would be nice if we could get a little more snow, the off lake trails are pretty nasty right now.  What's really cool is if you pitch the groomer a few bucks they will groom a path to your ice shack so you can drag it out in the spring.

How much snow is there AKHD?
We have next to nothing in Yellowknife.
My lake has 2"-3" and there may be 4"-5" in the bush.
Not enough to run the trail from the lak up to my cabin without bouncing off rocks the whole way.
  :'(
I'm going to have to start moving snow off the lake to my trail so I can haul in more building supplies for this years work.   ::)

I would guess between 6-8 inches in most places.  I think the groomer needs at least 12 to groom the off lake trails.  No where near enough snow to create overflow and keep the trucks off the lake.

So I checked out that guys web page and his prices are absolutely ridiculous.  For a day of fishing on Louise a guy could book two days of saltwater fishing with a charter boat.  I don't think we have to worry about this guy to much I met him last year at the big lake tournament and he's a truck fisherman so wants he puts his rig in the drink with clients in it his business will be over.  If he was smart he would hire a couple of us locals to take guys out at least we know how to release fish for another day.

Do you have questions?

Currently at the Lake in my Arctic Oven. -26F out.

Fishing was slow today, 3 good hits, many marked, but couldn't connect. Making this trip a challenge is that I forgot my tackle bag in my garage, so we currently have 1 jig and one jighead lol. Gonna see if I can find someone on the lake tomorrow and trade beer for a few lures.

Last trip I lost my auger bit, this trip forgot the tackle bag. I'm on a roll! Hahaha.

I have heard from someone who I feel is a very reliable source (He owns a fishing tackle shop and he has always given me solid advice) that when there is a high pressure system (blue skies and bitter cold weather), the laker fishing is generally slow.  Is this an observation that you have found to be true?  It seems like it to me but I confess I am new when it comes to ice fishing for lakers.  I've caught a lot of them in the summer trolling or fly fishing, but I haven't had the best luck in the winter.  Do you think this might be why fishing was slow for you or something else (lack of tackle?)
Title: Re: 2016/2017 Lake Louise reports
Post by: J2theD on Jan 08, 2017, 04:17 PM
I think lack of whitefish for bait is my problem. We mark them pretty consistently in most areas, but getting them to bite is a whole different story. Two of the best days I've had laker fishing were when it was clear out. I can't find any consistency out here while laker fishing, honestly.

Also, big shout out to Jiggen for being awesome enough to let me borrow a bag of tackle! Also, seeing pics of his ice house is one thing, but being inside really shows you just how nice and comfortable it is!

I'm probably the wrong guy to ask because I'm definitely not an expert, but we were catching most of ours in about 5-10 feet of water.  But I did catch one burbot on a tube jig in about 40 feet of water on the bottom at night.

Definatly, I'm hoping to head up next weekend if I get fri off.  I have to take care of a little otter problem so I need to talk to the guy that traps that area to see if he is going to go after them or not.  Do you know trapper Paul, he works the tyone area?  Supper nice guy and the stories he can tell are unreal, he's in his 70s and still traps out there by himself.  I ran around a little with him last spring and helped him put in some muskrat sets.

No, I haven't heard of anyone named Paul who traps up that way.  But I do know a friend that traps otters pretty regularly up in that area.  If you want I can give him your phone number and have him call you.  I bought some 330s that I planned to use this year to trap some otters over by my place, but I haven't seen any sign yet this year.

I have a hot spot that always produces in the summer, but dead in the winter,  do you guys find the summer spots produce in the winter as well? Or should I bounce around a bit, I was thinking 25-30 foot of water is good, also did 100 foot last year and got the smallest lakers I have ever seen.

Watch out for falling rock around long lake and the other usuall spots lots of rock in the road on my way home.  Also some moron in a truck got stuck out in front of Larson bay and tore the area up pretty good trying to get it out so be careful if your in that area the ruts looked real deep.  I'm starting to feel like a broken record here, please stay off the lake with wheeled vehicles.  For you greedy lurkers on here just keep in mind your making it extremely dangerous for other people who use the lake responsibly.  It's not worth getting people hurt just so you can go out and catch a fish, man up and walk out like the rest of us did when we first started fishing out there.

Just got back yesterday and the snow is goin fast.  It's still freezing really good at night but during the day the sun softens the snow including the hard packed trail.  I pulled my shack and got it put away in the morning while the snow was still hard.  It's real easy right now to tear the trails up so take it easy on the trails.  There was a couple side by sides on the east side of the lake on Saturday so I can only imagine  they tore the trail up when they went to leave so be careful if your on that side of the lake.  Bring your sunscreen and plenty of water cause it gets hot out in that sun.
