I'm wondering what everyone's preference is when it comes to setting up your Tipups. Straight line, circle...etc. Me personally, I like to set mine up in a tight and longer zigzag or a shorter but wider zigzag depending on the depth I'm trying to cover. I will sometimes run them in a straight line shallow to deep and sometimes scatter them to find an active area and move the inactive ones closer, especially when fishing a flat. What's your preference?

Fished a lot this season with tip ups for the first time in a long time and have been doing great.. Only because the ice is nice and the weather has also been good...
The biggest thing I have done this year is to use my MarCum to be sure of the depth of your bait in the water column..... ;)
-
I usually set mine in a T or a line depending but I like t be able to see all the dip ups in one window of the shanty and that window is right in front of me ...but I only set tip ups for northerns or tiggers I have no idea about lakers
-
I try to set mine up randomly around structure. Failing to find that I will go with 2 straight lines about 20 yards apart or I will do an L shape.
-
depends on what I am fishing for I will fallow structure for some species where others its about fishing the water column
-
It usually starts out like this for me
o o o
o o o
then after about an hour or 2 without a flag
o o o o
o o
then if frustration sets in
oo o oo o ooo o o o o o
o o o o o o o o
o o o o oooooo oo o o o oo ooo
o o o oo oooooo oooo ooo o o o oo
o o o oo o

I do the same thing and I do like the beer in the middle pattern. :roflmao:
-
I prefer beer at each tip-up with more beer at the center where I am jigging. Always concerned about myself and the fish being properly hydrated!

Depends on the species and structure. Many times I'll run a straight line in open water, in a channel or weed edge making it easy to look straight down the line. When fishing for muskies I'll set up on weed edges but the tip ups could be anywhere from 75 -150 yards apart. So never end up being straight as the weed edges come in or out or around coves etc.

i either run them down weed edge or shallow to deep sometimes it matters

I will start in a diamond pattern one inshore, two where I think and one offshore a bit. Once I start getting flags this will turn into a square or line.
-
I normally go in a straight line

Yep, I like your beer can mindset for placing tip ups
-
if only colorado looked at tip ups like they do jugs or trotlines we can have 10 jugs or 50 hooks on a trotline but a tip up counts as a pole so we can only have 2 poles total
-
Sounds interesting. Wish we could do that in New York. All fishing violations carry a heavy fine. New York State is still in the dark ages when it comes to fishing and hunting rules.
-
When do our annual trip Saturday is basically a tip up day. We set up base camp and drill holes in a big cricle around it. Then drill holes back to the camp, imagine a big wagon wheel. We spread out the tipups at first then rotate to where the flags are going off. We can cover alot of ground with the 30 or so tip ups for the 10-12 guys that show up.
-
Straight line so I can glance up quickly from my shack. No blind spots. If fish haven't been located they are perpendicular to a drop off so the depths are varied and once flags start flying they'll be set in the depth where the action was and I'll turn my shack so they are in my sight line with a quick glance.
-
We usually stagger them and try to follow structure. I like to drop them down with a lead depthfinder and pull them about 2' from the bottom.
-
New spot; a line shallow to deep, I give each "Hole" 45 min. then move, letting the fish tell me were to move the tilt to...
