Auger modifications

Has anyone using the clam plate modified their hand auger with a ring near the blades to prevent locking up when breaking through the ice? I know they sell augers specifically for it, but I have 3 hand augers already that I wouldn't mind messing with and saving the money. Thanks

My buddy bought the clam plate to try this year, buuuuuuttt...he hasnt had the opportunity to use it...
