It looks good starting last night. In quite a few places there should be good ice in less than a week.

I googled ice growth on a lake and it looks like we need the average daily temp to be 25F for a week for 4 in of ice to form.

What really helps is if you can just get a couple days back-to-back where it only avgerages 20F or less and a couple other decently cold days.

What really helps is when it's not 50° and raining...  :(

There are a few lakes around me that I can get on in 3 days if...

The water is already (very) cold
Night temps less than 15*
Cloudy with little or no wind
Daytime highs not above 30*

I'll be on Wednesday 😉

Cold is great but wind is crucial too, it has to die done so the lakes can cap first. then its game on usually an inch per nite in this cold. The other factor is the water temp was up over these last few weeks so it takes awhile to go the other way. I was getting crappie in areas I get them in march the last couple weeks so the fish felt the warmer water also.

NEPA guys, how do we make out with the snow from Saturday?
Anything that will mess up the ice making this week?

Snow totals were fairly low across the area.

Things to watch are some lakes haven't re-capped with the wind, and the temperatures are currently forecast to be a bit higher than they had been forecast to be.

Thanks Esoxnepa, I was way south this weekend below Baltimore and had mixed reports on snow. Just got back to PA and agree it seems warmer than the predictions were a few days ago. Fingers crying seed we have some cold calm. Junta t lock things up. Ice and tight.

I can’t spell for $#!T! And I’m half blind when using tablet and phone so apologies for inarticulate post.
That was supposed to read “fingers crossed for cold calm nights” rather than that garbage in the previous post.

Past two days of cold only iced up edges, middle still open on larger lakes.  Was out on a small lake in Wyoming Co this afternoon and there was about 3/4" that pumped with every step.  Took two slams with wrecking bar to get thru, and no I was not out in middle, at shore.

Checked same lake as previous post, Wyoming county, currently just over 3" ice. So there's your growth rate. ..3/4" to 3" over two nights...single temps at night, water must have been warmer from runoff past two weeks ..

Just checked same pond same area now has 4".  Out approx 50' down to 3" ice.  Slightly warmer evenings ahead will slow growth considerably...

As much as I hate to say it, the rain is going to do a lot of damage to the ice.  At this rate I'm going to start taking up a collection for a tanker of liquid nitrogen so we can freeze a lake.

With this weeks temps we may need air conditioning. Sad state of affairs.
