On a couple of local lakes I used to catch most of mine on small shiners below a tip up just below the ice over water 20 feet or deeper. I also caught them jigging with kastmasters and panfish jigs, and they are attracted to green weeds if you find them near the bottom, much like other fish. Probabably feeding on invertebrates.

Also, for some reason there is a small pond that forms an outlet on one of these local lakes, and they are attracted to this area. It can be dynamite icefishing there some years and some years not.
I live in the midwest now but have fond memories of fishing in New England as a kid.

Mostly corn around here but I've always had good luck with small fatheads also.

Small pimples, Forage Minnow spoons and some 1" crappie tubes in a variety of colors from Southern Pro.   I use a small tetr totr jig in the tube to fish it horizontally, and fish it like a jiggin rap.  Waxworms work well with the droppers on the spoons.

Good luck

SMall shiners, worms, orange painted swedish pimples tipped with a minnow head. seen others do well with power bait dough as well.

I believe the official name is called an Emerald shiner. It basically  is a very small minnow(2-3 inches). The bad news is that it doesn't sound like we will be able to use Emeralds this year in NYS because of the VHS virus ???

Worms on a tip-up up near shore, around inlets is deadly.

I'm from NW Pa and Velveeta cheese is commonly used for trout.  I personally have never used it myself, but it must work as there are lots who do use it.

Yea, I guess if the fishing is slow, you could always snack on your bait.

I been using a green mitzy-ditzy sometimes tiped with a 1/4 of a orange powerbait ball on it.My buddy uses a yellow wireworm tiped with corn. I know a few guys who fish at another lake and they swear by velveeta cheese there.Everytime out last year and the two trips this year limited out with the smallest fish being 2lbs.

shrimp and worms,on a bait holder hook, and i find myself checking all the lakes around here for ice thickness  before driving the kids snowmobile on it too,our lakes only have about7" of not bad ice at 4000ft we had some -20c weather then some +c weather and have some 2 layers of ice amounting to 7' which isnt very good, even so there is alot of solid ice and its time to start on some rainbow quests,it was kind of a crappy day yesterday with the wind howling and trying to pick up my ice tent and standing in 3"of water but was probably my best fishing day all year as far as action goes, and i think i might go back tomorrow,Oh yeah I out fished my dad yesterday,he left at 5am as he says you gotta be there before light ya know, when i got to the lake he had one and just lost the 2nd but he told me to go to the other end of the lake,so he comes down to my end of the lake at about 2:30 to see how im making out and sees 4 fish on the ice and another coming out the tent door,he only got 2 for the day,and had to go home and tell my mommy that the kid out fished him,my pappy is a hard core never gets out fished fisherman, and that will be my 1 day of glory for the year and im loving it,if i go tomorrow ill post what i catch or dont catch
