What size hooks
« on: Feb 06, 2012, 08:01 PM »
What hooks and size do you use on your tip-ups for lakers. I went for lakers for the first time Sat. and got into some undersize ones and had a hard time releaseing them because they took it so deep, I was using smelt for bait. Thanks!

The size of the hook depends more on the size of the bait than the size of the fish.  I always expose the point of the hook......fish see no danger in that.  Since it is vertical fishing, you don't have to grab much of the bait to keep it on the hook so hook it lightly.  If the bait is large, use 2 hooks in tandem instead of a much larger hook.  Use the best quality hooks you can find.
