Separate drill for anchors
« on: Dec 02, 2021, 10:15 AM »
Does anyone know if any regular cordless drill will work on drilling anchors into the ice?  I'm debating on if I want to spend the extra money on a semi decent drill or go with a lower model drill.  It's too much of a hassle unhooking my drill from my clam plate and my wrists hurt trying to drill the anchors by hand.  Good thing would be that with an extra drill comes with a battery to use in case my main one runs out of juice.

Any she shed picture hanging drill will work ..another option is to mount an ION® Quick Release / Ice Anchor Adapter. The ION adapter will mount right to the plate ..comes with the stub which mounts to your auger drill bit unit and the Ice anchot tool . I have one but have yet to use it on ice . Which drill set up are you running ? some times you can match the make with a brushed tool with low amp hour batteries ..so to keep it in the same platform.

These things run pretty much MSRP all season long ..they mabe tough to find ..

I use the Ion power head to screw in my anchors with the adaptor. It works ok but the power head is a little awkward.  I manhaul my gear a lot so dragging along a separate drill is not really attractive to me.

I use an 18 volt, brush type for anchors. I leave my 20 volt brushless on the Clam Plate.

One drill for me. I have adapters in both augers and I use an Eskimo ice anchor "widget" to screw those in. Keep everything in 1 bag. Takes no time at all to make the switch.

If you get good ice anchors like eskimo they screw in so easy and fast that no drill or extra drill will be needed.my shappell and polarbird ice anchors are crap compared to the eskimos.i replaced all my ice anchors with eskimo brand.

I use a separate brushless rigid drill for my anchors. Mainly cause I'm lazy and dont wanna disconnect my main drill from my auger.

I just take the battery from one drill to the other.

Agree with getting the Eskimo anchors. I have the adaptor and I seldom use it, can get a couple in by hand in the time to takes to put the adaptor on to run them in with the drill. I usually find myself drilling exploratory holes first then holes to fish in the shelter and switching between the kdrill and the adaptor takes more time than putting them in by hand.

I have an old bit brace too.  Wooden handles kind of bad when wet and frozen.

No need for an expensive drill. I use a small compact 12v drill. I think it has somewhere between 300-400lbs of torque

One drill for me.

One drill to rule them all, one drill to find them, one drill to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.

My thoughts too Reb. It literally takes me less than 15 seconds to remove the anchor adapter and connect drill to auger...and vice-versa.

I don’t think they have one that will work with the Clam plate but this is what I use. Super handy and you just have to make sure the quick chuck is secured one time instead of having to chuck the auger every time.

Here is a different solution-----the extra sharp screws in the pic are easy to get into the ice. (I just marked the pointy end with red so you can see it better. Being a camper, I naturally try to put these tent 'pegs' in on a 45deg angle as I would do for summer camping. A small light duty drill is quite sufficient.

Minimalist! What kind of men are you? Who has just one drill? Are you trying to tell me that with all the generators,  electronics & dogs we drag out on the ice it’s ridiculous to have a dedicated ice anchor drill? Sheesh 🙄

I would rather screw in anchors by hand then bring a separate drill or take my auger off the drill.but thats just me i guess.i only put 2 anchors in on opposite corners.1 in front and 1 in back, then one on the windy side to tie off.takes no time at all.eskimo ice anchors make all the difference.they go in effortlessly.

Lessee...1) I'm a "less is usually better" man. 2) I carry 1 drill 3) No generator or dogs...just a locator and heater. 4) Not sure why I would want or need to carry socks and underwear around in a bag for  weeks.

Next questions.

I use one drill, but I don't use a clam plate.  It's pretty easy to switch the auger for the ice anchor adapter.

Same. Auger adapter on each auger and clamped wooden discs on each for "auger savers". Switching to anchor adapter is easy.
