Been fishing more and more lately this winter after the purchase of my Helix 7. After some time spent on the water I am curious what others value the most on their trips to the lake. Aside from new shacks, fishing sonar, and augers what is important for you to have on the ice? Any certain brands or devices that make you fishing much easier?
Thank you in advance!!

Been around quite a while.
Where did the word ditto come from?
It comes from Italian ditto, a dialect variation on detto, meaning “said," the past participle of dice, “to say.” It was used in Italian as in il ditto libro, “the aforesaid book.” In English, it came to be used in the 17th century to avoid having to repeat words and phrases in accounting and commercial language.Dec 28, 2016

I think he meant he never heard the term Fish Whistle...
Besides augers and sonars, I'd say my Striker suit.
-
Yeah I quoted the wrong post, I was talking about the fish whistle
-
cigars are right up there....sunglasses, although I forget them more times than not, and something to eat/drink is important, although oft times forgot too....

Water

I should have caught that. Na I'm too old to catch onto things.
-
Fishing License? Unless you are on private water how can you fish without it?

Good one, I'm screwed if I don't have sunglasses.

Aside from auger/poles/flasher, I don't think I'd go back home for anything else except the fish whistle and contents to fill it. Even then, I may skip it and have a nice relaxing time once I get home. ;D

Gas money to get home.
I just need enough gas to get to the lake
-
Great question, I always seem to take too much every time!! Would like to learn to go with less!!

Besides my ice picks a good fishing buddy! Accidents can happen at any time of year, use caution

No worries, I’ve used the term “ditto” for over 50 years and now have the ability to impress anyone who questions my knowledge of the meaning and origins of the word. @)

TP and a baggie.

Hey I was amazed at how long it has been around. Who would have thunk it?

I try to take my boy as often as possible.

Over the years I've found it's best I don't forget my sense of humor....

This is NOT a one item question. There are a number of "important" items. If you take just a rod, how do you cut a hole, or what do you use as bait? However, I do get the concept. Being that you need more then one item, I would put my flasher at the top of the list!
Go back and read the original post. The "fishing gear" is already covered.
"Aside from new shacks, fishing sonar, and augers what is important for you to have on the ice?"

Most important thing (besides fishing essentials) would be water.
I also try to leave as much in town as possible, like thoughts about work, or bills, or cleaning, or housework, or anything else I stress about.
When I pack up and get ready to leave I go over my checklist. Boots, auger, rod, lure/bait, shack. If I have at least that much I know I can fish. And that is all I really need. Anything else is just a comfort.

One or both of my boys.
-
I agree with a previous post: Striker Ice bibs. I've been through the ice 5x and those things have helped save my life more than once. Wouldn't fish without them.
-
Gloves. Went out last weekend and forgot the gloves at home. Never realized how much you take them for granted until you don't have them.
-
Net for the bait and the skimmer.
smitty

The inflatable bar. Hands down

I stand corrected, thnx! My new answer would be "Respect". Respect for everyone else out on the lake or river trying to enjoy themselves and respect for the outdoors and Mother nature.
Agreed ^^^^, good answer. :)

snowshoes.
-
I generally treat my little day trip as if "what if" I am stranded.
So a few essential survival gear stuff.
Water proof container
First Aid kit
Camping kit
Lighting kit
Knife kit - well more than one knife.
Towing strap
Some tools at times like shovel or snow shovel
Food kit - usually water, instant ramen, some hotdogs/sausages.
Change of clothes/extra boot. - I know that one time I fell and got water logged boots. Water proof boots works both ways...keeps water in boots too.
I tend to over pack...but there has been too many times when I have been under prepared in the past. Learned that it's better to have and not need, then to need and suffer needlessly.

Remind me to never fish with Jaybes

Then you were alive at a time when schools used "ditto" machines and that interesting smell when tests got passed around.
Warm clothes.....I can think of many times that I wasn't dressed properly.

Took my wife to the shanty tonight. Last chance for this year. I'm good til next winter. And she caught a few gills. She liked watching the fish on cam..

There's no one item, but the top item on my list is cold weather suit.

Aside from all the essentials, a small first aid kit. Takes up minimal room, weighs next to nothing.
