Jigging for pike
« on: Dec 03, 2013, 05:56 PM »
Hey everyone was just curious what a good jig was for northerns.  I've always done pretty well just sinkin some large shiners  but this year I would like to have one on a dead stick while I jigged close by.  I've hear a good things about chubby darters, rapala jigging raps, and the lindy darter.  Thoughts?  Any one maybe work better for different times during the ice season?

Don't forget jigging a plain old red and white daredevl.  That's been very effective for me in the past.

You could try rattletraps, horizontally rigged swim baits, and my favorite larger roadrunner jig head with a large gary yamamoto curly tail.  I'm not a pike guy but that's what I'd try, and larger spoons, maybe an orange crushed ice Swedish pimple or Northland buckshot?

I've had a little luck with Jigging RAPs.  Pound the bottom, raise it up and gentle lift and fall.

I've used the giant chubby a little bit for pike, but not enough to have any luck with it yet. The #6 is killer for lake trout! I think it would be great for pike as well.

One of the lakes i fish has tons of pike.

I usually deadstick a minnow on a swedish pimple and figure the minnow swimming will work the jig  ….  i've caught a few pike that way.

They sure are fun on a little ice rod  ;D

I have been able to call Pike (and a couple of trout) in with rattle traps, rattle raps, chubbies and other lipless cranks but have never been able to make them take through the ice at 11 Mile.  I think a spoon would be my first choice for jigging.

I have most of my luck jigging spoons or jigs tipped with meat.
Fried eggs, hash browns, and a cup of joe.

Aggressive pull and slow drop jigging with a large green Mr twister works from time to time.  ;)
