Kokanee through the ice 11/29/13
« on: Nov 29, 2013, 05:26 PM »
Had the day off today, so I met my buddy up for my first Kokanee action.  Got on the ice around 7am, and action was on until I got my limit around 11am.  Early bite was on a glow pink jig tipped with waxies, and later bite came off jigs tipped with raw shrimp.  Fish seemed healthy and pretty good size compared to previous seasons, and a few of the females still had some roe to harvest for making roe sacks.  Weather was awesome, and it was good to get a limit on my first Kokanee outing.

Flags up, gentlemen!!!

How do they taste after they are spawned out? I've only ever caught them in the silver ( jan-mar) phase.

I catch plenty at blue mesa when fishing for lake trout, they generally come through in schools 15 - 35 feet below the ice  and are FAST moving. Get a little spoon tipped with a waxy down there and you can catch them. Best eating fishing around.

Filleted them up and cooked some of them up tonight-- broiled with olive oil, onion, garlic, and butter.  Meat was great- mild, and not fishy at all.  I don't have a smoker, but they were great!

Got a bunch of roe for roe sacks, too.   ;D

The silvery ones do not need to be smoked only the spawners imo.
