I got a cousin down there in gulfport also a seabee but could not tell you doing what or where.  From what I here from him though he really likes it there and will try to keep his duty station there as much as possible.

There's a lot of great guys on here, I feel kind of silly, I did eight years in the Army reserves in Omaha, Ne.  530 mp bn. and didn't get deployed the entire time I was in.  My unit has been deployed four or five times since and was deployed to Iraq when I was in basic.  Great group of guys.  Thanks to all serviceman...  even the marines.  P.S. ...  I've never looked like the army guy in the marine picture, even as a reservist.

Why would you feel silly ???  The Reserves and National Guard play an important part of national security.

Hey Cheeks!! When were you in the the Med? I did the second half of the Iwo's last Med cruise; August 92-Nov 92. Just wondering if you were part of our battle group or the relieving battle group. We had Dick Cheney aboard during the multi-national exercise when that little incident with the Saratoga happened.

Anchors Away!
Mike
I was in the Med from Mar 95- Sept 95. I was in boot when you were there. And just to clarify, it's aweigh, not away. Glad to see such a Navy presence!! Guess you can't keep us from the water, even when it's frozen!! Cheeks out!!! 8)

U.S. Navy 1989-1993

I was a part the squadron VAW-113 with which we served on the USS Independence, USS Midway and the USS Carl Vinson ended being an E-3 (AMS3).

I did sign up for a 6 month stint with the Navy reserve but they had just closed the reserve airbase at Great Lakes so wasn't able to work on airplanes therefore I didn't re-up.

The Seabees have 2 types of duty stations, "Battalion" and "public works". The Battalion duty stations are Gulfport Miss. and Port Hueneme Ca. This is where most new bees end up right after basic training and its where they get their wings (hands on experience). Battalions are usually a 4 year tour where you are over seas for 6 months, then back at homeport for 6 months. Once you have completed this 4 year tour you are usually offered a "public works" which can be here or over seas, and usually last up to 3 years, after that you may have to go back to battalion.(not always). They try and rotate you stateside for a few years and then overseas for a few years....makes it fair for everyone. Your Uncle was most likely attached to the specwar(speacial warfare) group we have down there. They are mainly a seal support group.  Its a pretty cool gig! I said in a previous post that the seabees was one coolest jobs in the Navy, and this is why, there are so many oppurtunitys as a seabee. I was fortunate to be selected out of basic training to serve at the presidential retreat(camp david). There are a group of about 40 fulltime seabees who fully support the retreat. That was considered "public works" for me, so once my time was up, they sent me over seas....(Cuba)...lol, Had the best time of my life in Gtmo.........never wanted to leave, since they wouldnt keep me on the island, i just got out of the navy, my 5 years were up. Hope this helps some.................. .....Seabee
