Title: Safe Ice
Post by: nodakclam19 on Nov 28, 2013, 03:45 PM
Went out fishing Wed the 27th. Fishing on 6 inches of ice and caught over 100 perch between 3 guys. Kept just enough to have lunch and dinner on the hardwater. Another year begins.

We had good ice in northcentral Montana (around Great Falls) in early Dec. We now have questionable ice on several lakes.  Full size vehicles or 4-wheelers have gone throigh. Too many warm days & high winds. Winds from 60-90 mph the last two days!

winds like that will destroy ice if the temps get up there , I remember a couple of years back 24 -30 inches of ice the permies were going through ,  the temps and winds went up the ice would melt on top and act like a water saw around the shacks got ugly for a while , you could drill a hole 5' away and still have great ice , very educational

That happened to my shack on a lake in MN about 12 years ago.  60 degree day and wind got the water swirling around the fish house, under the nw corner my 8" hole opened up to an area about 3 feet in diameter.  had 21" of ice under the se corner.  Luckily a nasty cold front hit before mine fell through, but there was 5-6 shacks in the same area as mine that melted through and turned into bobbers.
