Can You Help My Daddy?
« on: Feb 13, 2007, 06:39 AM »

My name is Jonathan and I turned seven last month. I go ice fishing with my Daddy a lot in Colorado. I have caught quite a few trout this year, but I want a northern. I have my own tip-up, but I am beginning to wonder if my Daddy knows what he’s doing when he sets it up. He uses a homemade quick-strike rig baited with a frozen sucker. Daddy has caught four 18” to 20” northern on his tip-up when I have stayed home because of school, but I never have a flag when I am along. Do I need to find a new fishing partner or do you think there’s still hope for Daddy?

Jonathan,
Thats why they call it Fishing instead of catching!

Also, Dad cannot afford to have you land a 20 pounder until he does, so until then he has probably removed the hooks from your rig!

Try using frozen smelt or herring from 5-7" in length that is thawed and rigged on a single treble hook on a 12" 30# test leader.  The oilier fishes will draw in more pike, generally speaking.

I'm very glad to know that you have such a interest in this sport at such a young age! My 8 year old son loves fishing as well. He now is the proud owner of his own FL8. As far as pike go.....You are gonna catch alot of them with your fishing future ahead of you being a long one. When you do start to put it on your pop try not to rub it in. Or at least not until you get your driver's liscense ;D

Ahh Jonathon, all hope is not lost on your Daddy. Here is what you do; first, make sure you supervise all aspects of the setting out of the tip-ups and quickstrike rigs, we all know that kids know more than their parents. Make sure your Daddy is setting them up the same way in the same type of cover/area. When all is said and done, tell him you get the first flag, no matter what. Second, if the first doesn't work, start tripping your daddy's flag when he's not looking until he gets tired of running and says you get the next flag. ;D

I don't like it here, so I will probably be here for a while.........

From Jonathan's Daddy: Jonathan was really excited that so many of you sent him messages. We sat and read them together and he composed and typed his personal message back to you. He loves to go ice fishing and for a seven year old is truly on a quest to catch a northern. Its all that's on his mind when we go out together. We've probably spent 10+ days on the ice together since the new year. His Mom joins us sometimes. When he catches that northern we'll post the picture! Thanks to you all. I laughed so hard at some of the replies and some really touched our lives. Taking kids fishing is one of life's great pleasures.
