looks like people are already able to walk on top of the snow off MDB, the lake froze all the slush already?

Just checked a couple spots with the new ice that formed just before the snow, doesn't look good.

Diamond Point: slush along shore had frozen, spud went through with two light hits, weak snow ice. Didn't bother trying to get out to where the snow was, didn't feel like swimming; guessing no ice was made under the snow and maybe and inch there.

Basin Bay: lots of ice near shore, was there before the storm; slowly spudded my way out to the end of the chunk ice, about 60 yds or so and it thinned out quickly, spud going through easily again, didn't go further. Most of the bay is snow covered.

There are some areas with slush possibly all frozen but it probably isn't that thick, still lots of snow around and the ice under it isn't growing. Temps don't look good coming up this weekend through next week, upper 30s tomorrow even. Stay off anything new for sure at this point.

Thanks for the updates Capt.  I was trying to be  optimistic for the north end.  I havent checked any ice yet but it was all new and now snow covered so im guessing it will be much of what you described.

Pretty sure it was still open in Hague when we locked up down here Allen, so probably less ice up north.

Just another reminder, use your spuds.  Snow today made me lose track of where I wanted to set up.  Spud told me to turn around quickly.  Saw too many without them today.

Sweet.  Of course the car just decided to hiccup and throw a mean cylinder one missfire...let's hope it's a plug or a coil...so I can fish instead of replace a block... :(

I'm shocked we didn't read about someone going in this past weekend with the thin ice covered by snow ...  especially after reading that people were out all over out of MDB.

Don't assume that just because it wasn't on Ice Shanty or you didn't here it that it didn't happen. I know of an individual who went in at least up to his waist. Stepped on an inch of ice from 4 inches.
Too many people out there that don't know what they're doing.

You're not kidding ....  and i am sure the internet isn't helping either.

There was a story about fishing George on the Channel 13 news here in Albany and they quoted a fisherman saying they checked the ice by drilling holes every few feet   :o

We watched a guy go in at Schroon a few weeks ago when he walked straight across a huge pressure crack that everyone else walked way north to cross.

I am praying for a warmup now.   Perfect setup would be a few days in the 40's and then some nice arctic cold.

This snippit from that article really blew my flipping mind man!

So how can you tell for sure if it's safe?

"It's basically just a knowledge thing," Spinosa says, "You feel it, you know, you're body will tell you."

Just disregard anything you've ever learned about ice safety and go with your gut. According to this fool.

I gave up trusting my gut... and fishing on Valentine's day.  :P

Don't forget this gem (from a 20-something):

"I've seen guys out there with life vests," "Generally we don't use them but we've been (ice fishing) long enough to know if it's safe or not."

They start the story saying how rare it is for George to freeze.  If I recall correctly the only time in the past 8-10 years we didn't get on the main lake was 2012.  Add in the obvious grammar errors in the story, this may take the cake for worst journalism of the year.  Remember, these are the people responsible for delivering the "news"!

everything past the point of the island just froze last week, and probably has an inch or less of ice with a foot plus of snow on top of that.

NEVER GIVE UP HOPE .....  one crazy day will hold me over for a year  ;D

As bad as last year was (and we were just walking out a year ago) i landed my first ever salmon, had a first ice outing with double digits and one all out slammer day with many expletives uttered.

So heck yeah ... there' still hope!   ;)
