Title: Henry's 2018
Post by: muskyon46 on Aug 02, 2018, 03:53 PM
Ok so I know its a bit early for this but man have I had it with the heat and NO precipitation this year. All I can do is sit inside and think of ICE!!!! I will start working on my new sleeper (clamx200) soon and that will keep me going till this trip. Check your emails as I have sent out the 1st of many between now and December. I changed things a little this year. Tightlines

Hi Guys, Thanks Matt for putting this together again this year and all your efforts with planning. Post some pictures of the progress on the sleeper when you get going. I'm looking forward to hardwater season already for sure.
Hope everyone is having a great summer.

Its no problem, I had to change it up a little for how I was putting the room together, as last year got a bit hectic. As usual I tied to get the most bang for the buck for the group and it was great the way they treated us opening up the other rooms. This year will still be a good time and they are going to accomodate us just the same. I will get a post going of the x200 when I get it in the garage. One thing I forgot to mention in the email was to keep the gear swap thing going again this year, so everyone should bring some things they might be willing to trade with. Now I know not everyone wants to haul a bunch more stuff up there but if theres 1 or 2 things you might willing to trade then lets keep it going. I'll be looking hard at some of my stufff when I start taking the ice gear out this year

Guess I dont know how to take this, I know the big fish numbers have been declining for many years but our catch rates for our group have been fairly good numbers wise and atleast 98% of the fish we catch go back in great shape. We never really have had huge amounts of BIG fish, just the one here and there. Maybe 2-3 each year  :-\ Oh and on another note the peeps with underwater cameras there see a ton of fish that just dont bite

Let’s just say I put some skis under a lazy boy recliner among other things. Hopefully your surgery goes well! You will be missed except for in the big fish contest.

iI can see that I’m going to need to get busy with a couple of ideas to keep up with you. That Jaw Jacker idea of yours is 1st rate. Still looking for a new flip over, guess they won’t hit the stores until late Oct. New Clam units claim 50% more insulation. Might be better to wait. Love this cold weather!

Hey Joe, do hope you are feeling better today, that first day after the heavy duty hospital meds wear off is a butt kicker, that's when you feel all that sawing and drilling and heavy duty body mod pain... something about that deep bone pain that is not good for sure, but it will get better... Hopefully you can sleep through most of that nasty pain days... Will keep ya in our prayers... Later J

I actually find it funny that there seems to be some bad feelings toward ice fisherman up there.  We generally have a whopping 30-40 days that Henry's is frozen before closing for 5 months, spend a short weekend there, and almost always catch and release everything.  Even if it was ice fished heavily by others, I don't think anybody can clear the lake out in 30 days with a limit of 2 even if they went everyday.  If we catch 100 fish between 15 of us, well over 90% will be returned promptly health and unharmed.

Second, there is no such thing as bad fishing, plus I'm really just going up there to eat, play poker, make bad bets with Joe, and enjoy the hot tub.

Hi guys! May I ask where you stay at Henry’s lake?

We stay lakeside at Jareds wild rose ranch, not the best brookie area but the big hybrids and cuts are around. Travel by machine to good brookie areas is doable depending on the ice conditions from there

Is this the same Henry's Lake you guys fish?

https://www.eastidahonews.com/2018/06/fish-arent-surviving-in-henrys-lake-looks-to-be-a-very-bad-season/ (https://www.eastidahonews.com/2018/06/fish-arent-surviving-in-henrys-lake-looks-to-be-a-very-bad-season/)

Is it true that the season closes January 2 through Memorial Day? I can't see how icefishing could have a negative impact if you only get a month or so on the ice.

Yup, that's the place.  Yup, that's the season.  Careful studies have shown that the ice fishing doesn't have any significant negative impact.  If I remember right, the entire ice season catch is less than the Spring opening weekend.

It's a special place, worth a visit if you ever get the chance.

I am getting excited boys!  As you guys know, I have been making jigs and plastics. I have in mind to put up some sort of a contest if you guys want to. The rules would be that one of your rods would be baited with my jig and plastic. Biggest fish caught throughout the trip would receive a special prize package put together by myself.  Anybody interested in such a thing? I will Make the prize a fun one for sure.  Also, a guy could increase his odds by Fishing more than one pole with my baits. Most of all, I think this would be fun for me to see which colors and sizes work best for those monster trout!

Thanks for being willing to participate in helping me out with my homemade tackle testing. I am excited to see which baits perform best so that we can dial them in from there for the future. Also, thanks to all of you for checking on my health condition. I really appreciate it. In the words of Nacho Libre, "I am doing good, really good!" I made some plastics today. I have been making them on the smaller side hoping that they work with the jaw jacker set ups. I poured some jigs as well and will be painting them tomorrow. I will try to get some funky ones done up especially for Chris! Looking through my old pictures, I saw one from last year that had me landing two fish at one time and it reminded me of what makes this trip such a fun experience. I will try to post some pics of the jigs tomorrow.

I got the rumor second hand so I can't verify this, but that's what I heard.... I did see ice on Mantua yesterday around the boat ramp for 30-50' out from the ramp... Joe if you go, check the outlet... Safe ice there now.... I guess the state park is a little thin but I seen pictures of a fair group out on the ice there... So I'd think those windows could be picked up anytime now.... Good luck and stay safe... J

Well bought a NILS, two more Jaw Jackers, and my Dad is coming up with us this year as well!  This trip is pretty much all I can think about lately, so bring it on!

I am in the market possibly for another couple poles, in your opinions, what ice rods do you feel works best in a jacker?  I love my ugly sticks, but I did notice that the tips are a little flexy when set in the jacker, thoughts?

Happy to hear that your dad is coming up! When it comes to fishing rods, you might check out the ones that the Jaw Jacker boys sell on their website. Of course you could always do what really works and go with PINK. Why mess with success? ;D

Hey Slap, for the jaw jackers the "dock demon" at WallyWorld has worked great for me. Had them from my father in law and started using them on the jaw jacker when i got my first one.  They are no-frill and the reels they come with are even more ghetto cheap....but the length and stiffness work great paired with the jaw-jackers.  I totally admit, they are cheap...but hey, they work and I don't worry much about damaging them. Note...I think there are two versions of the "dock demon" that they sell, the ones I reference are the longer ones with spinning reels...grey and red colored rod. Oh...i did have to sand the foam butt of the rod that flares out so that it fits into the jaw-jacker.

On a side note I got all set up with converting to the 8 inch NILS.  Was debating on the Fuel M18 Drill or Rigid.  Ended up going with Rigid since they have a lifetime warranty on the drill battery and charger.  Right now if you buy the 9ah battery with charger from HD, you can get the 1,300lb torque drill free until February.  So $199 + tax out the door, which as close to how much just the 9ah battery cost for the Fuel.  Also Rigid 9ah batteries are going to sell for $89 on Black Friday at HD.  Couldn't pass it up.

I would probably stick to the KEN version also. Thats a good deal on the drill chris, I will look forward to seeing it in action. I just sent out what should be the last email for the trip. Its sounding like the ice is holding out at 6in for most of the lake with some thicker spots in the outlet. I belive we will have around 9-10in by the time we get there if not a little thicker so that should make travel alot easier than last year. Get your stuff together cause its getting close

That does it! I have two brand new Barbie Rod’s on the man room door that have a Matt and Chris’s name on them. I think that they will be required to be used during my plastic fishing contest for those two.  I will probably head up the Tuesday before the trip. Might even head up Monday after physical therapy. Thanks you guys for working so hard at your day jobs so that the rest of us can have nice roads to get to our fishing spots!

Depends how many miles that our fearless leader wants to take us? I thought about just bringing a four wheeler, but a snowmobile might be the ticket for heading long distances over pressure ridges and sketchy ice.

If this weekends storm drops more than 8in that sticks I will be bringing the sled, if its less than that I will be bringing the bike. Sleds good to go and all I need to do is chain up the bike. The good thing is with that cam at the rose we will have a pretty good idea on whats needed. Your right on the extended forecast. its showing 40-50% chance of snow while we're there but like we all know I'm not counting on that until about next monday to be 70% accurate

Those are awesome fish, however, Six inch auger is plenty big to get them through.  I run a six inch kdrill and have pulled some big Lake trout at the Gorge through them.

Although, ideally, overlapping two auger holes makes it much easier to get them out.

Ok so 1st on ice report has 2in in the west marina (kiddie pool) which is weird, 7-8in in the east marina, 8in on the main lake out of the east marina. The pressure ridge out of the east marina has been broke down and should freeze up well by Thursday. Snowmobiles can make it over no prob. The beach access we used last year of course has some docks in the way that we may be able to move like last year for wheeler access. If we can't move the docks the only access will be across the ridge out of the east marina so some planks will be needed. More to come

I got my jaw Jackers out and just waiting for the bell’s now! I will keep you guys posted. The pressure Ridge that I knocked down yesterday looks to have frozen pretty good last night.  Finally getting the fish dialed in. This afternoon was pretty good jigging in a tent. Jaw Jackers have been slow. Tomorrow I will bring another tent out to a new spot and see what that produces. They are all over the screen right now, but just don’t want to commit. Very frustrating! Hopefully in a couple of days  they will get out of their slump.  I think it is time to retire the Barbie Rods. I lost a couple of five pounders at the hole today.  Just thought I better give you guys a snow report. Might’ve gotten about 6 to 8 inches last night. Probably more like six. Right now there is between 10 inches and a foot of snow on the ice. For wheelers or sleds should be fine. Had good luck with fish this morning. Still catching some brookies which is surprising to me over here. Nothing of any size today yet. Catching them on some of my homemade presentations! To whoever is traveling today, stay safe! Ryan is coming up and will be there in a couple of hours. Not sure when Geezer is supposed to be here? Anyone else coming today?

Thats about what I was guessing was on the old gas pump there this morning. Looks like your making tracks over that ridge really good now that you got it stiffened up. Crazy the small brooks are in there. maybe I'll check one off the bucket list this year. LOL. Good to hear your homemade stuff is working cause I've got plenty of rods to load them up on. To my knowledge just Ryan was traveling today then the biggest group tomorrow and the rest on friday. I'll give you a call after i'm opff and see how its going. Be safe and leave some fish for the rest of us dang it

Today was a great one! Fished with one rod because I was lazy, but it ended up working out just fine. The fish came in three different waves. The first was about 830 in the morning for an hour and a half. The second was right about 1130  until 2 o’clock. The third was from about four to 7:00 PM. The biggest thing for me today was a good rod with a  sensitive tip because they were lite biters. Most fish work Caught without bait on plastics that I have made. Yellow and pink were hot colors As was Glow. I only caught one fish over 25 inches but there were some pretty good ones as well as quite a few small Brooke trout  and cutthroat. Ryan and Gail both made it safe. Ryan caught quite a few fish tonight. You guys be careful driving up tomorrow and the next day! Looking forward very much to seeing you all again. We moved some of the docks that were in the way and getting machines on and off the ice won’t be a problem. Both snowmobiles and four wheelers will be fine. There is quite a bit of water under the snow on the ice especially in some areas. Might be a good idea to check the ice as conditions warrant.

From about 515 to 6 o’clock this morning I have seen seven fish on the ice. Ryan is learning the struggles of having slept in a nice cozy tent on the ice! I’m not sure he’s even out of bed yet. LOL Gail just showed up and hopefully he will get the fish turned on as well. I’m fishing with the 1/8 ounce yellow plastic that I call a cutthroat combo. Knocking them dead!  Hurry up Boys, I need reinforcements quick! :icefish:

OK...safely back home from fantastic trip to Henry's. Thanks for all the great times to those that made it, and hope more can join the pilgrimage next year.

Caught a huge fish that would have smoked the competition...but caught it the day before it was eligible.  Congrats to SlapTheFish for taking home the $$ pot with a win by catching another lunker Saturday. Fun times for sure. Also got to take the new sleeper flip-over and the new to me quad for their maiden voyages and am very happy with both. Will make a few small tweaks to the flip over in prep for sleeping at the Gorge.

Looking forward to the other pics from the gang when they get home tomorrow, but here are are few of mine.

Thurs afternoon shortly after arriving.

Friday Afternoon...had to squeeze it a bit to get through the hole then into the measure box that BFTSkunkedAgain helped me measure it in. Glad he was there to witness it too so that the world can know it wasn't just another "fish story". released her back for someone else to catch later.

Damon, hey words and the pictures can't describe the beauty of that fish, I was so lucky to be there and see that thing fighting down under the ice, what a monster fish it was... I always heard an 8" hole is big enough for anything.... Not so sure about that anymore since you had to squeeze that fish through the hole to get it out... What a beauty...  What a great trip too, I thoroughly enjoyed it again this year, just sorry I missed the show of checking out everyone's modifications, seems I dropped the line in and fish started biting right off the bat, I ended up so busy catching fish that I didn't get to see many of the cool mods and work everyone had been doing... Biggest regret of the trip, but I sure had fun catching fish and those jigging jaw jackers seemed to work pretty well. Although most of the fish I caught was off the active rod I was jigging myself, the jjj's did pretty well too... Very fun trip and weather worked out okay as well... Thanks everyone and enjoyed the visits... Later J

Thanks to everyone for all the help and great times. This trip really was a fantastic one . Was personably my best for catching fish, lots of planters and even a couple of big ones. Congratulations to Slap the Fish for winning the pot! And to Damon for that beautiful lunker of his. Thanks to Joe for all the great plastics he passed out ( they catch fish ) and Matt thanks for the book of pictures it’s a real treasure. Hope to see you all at the Gorge!

Ok so I finally got a few pics to put up. Between me and my bro-inlaw we pulled probably 50 fish over the weekend with only maybe 8 of them being larger than all the dinks we all were catching. I'll start off with my bro-inlaw who had a blast on this trip. He had only been icefishing maybe a handful of times and was amazed with all the set-ups everyone had. His biggest fish came in at 21"

And a few of mine, biggest being 19in

These are the new set-up and scenery, I was really liking the new tent. It will work out great for the gorge. Sky's new tracked machine is a beast.

hey musky thats an awesome setup on your jaw jackers. which bubble box is that? does it work fine in super cold temperatures? thats a fix that i like more than putting some sort of cover over the hole. i see a bubble box on amaon for 9.99, i wonder if thatll work.

also, do you have any fixes for blowing snow or freezing triggers? a problem i have with my jaw jackers is the snow will blow over the jaw jacker on the trigger and then melt and freeze making the trigger stick. i find if it gets wet pretty easy when there is wind, and there is alot of wind in wyoming :)

Mines actually a different box I got at the bargain cave here when it was open but my friend uses the bubblebox and they work just the same here's a pic of the ones I have with my modified coat hanger/ zip tie set up. Not much we can do for that WY wind other than keep the hole clean and trigger dry. They are susceptible to freeze up as is every hook setter

Great video joe I finally got to watch it all in full tonight. Gotta say your the only man I know that leaves town with 3 tents fully loaded. That Gina rod worked great , good thing she keeps you set up with the best equipment while your comfy. Lol never gonna forget that lazy boy. I should have stuck around camp more this trip but the good ice was too good not to explore a bit.
No matter we all got our face time in at the room each night for sure and/ or lost a few $$ in poker. Best hand back + $5 I've ever had. Those that seen it know what im talking about. WHO honestly gets 5 flush's in 1 night.  Not this guy, just 4 t.o come in 2nd

Great pics Joe!  That trip will go down as one of the most memorable, even with having to change both bearings on my trailer on the way up, and the welds on the trailer giving out on the way back, there isn't anything that could have ruined my week.  Thanks to all the fellas that stopped at Malad summit to help figure out the situation fast.  Luke helped me weld it and get it off the trailer two days later and besides needing redecking, I think the trailers ready for more abuse.  Man those special plastics Joe made were awesome, I look forward to using them wherever I can.  Thanks again Joe for the wonderful side prize package and the winning rig.

And of course thanks most of all to Matt for running logistics and keeping this trip alive.  Look forward to next time.

Cheers,

Slap
