Now when you say leader your talking mono or flourocarbon because if they are line shy that is the only way to go right? thanks i can get my hands on emeralds and fatheads dont know bout leaches though might be kinda tough in the winter.   thanks for the info                           hard water

definitely some kind of mono leader, flouro definitely wouldn't hurt.  I have always been under the impression that 3"-4" emeralds (icicles) were the ticket for eyes.

Yes 3-4 " emeralds do the trick, do leeches really work in the cold? I know in the spring/summer they curl up tighter than hell when they hit the colder water.

I also use a leader about 6 ft in length.

I would stay away from flourocarbon IMO.  I think a mono design for ice fishing is the best bet.  I do a lot of steelhead fishing with flouro leaders in cold temps, and trust me flouro is no fun to work with in cold conditions.  Go with a light mono, 8 lbs. is probably good.  Clear water, try 6 lbs.

I use a 2-3 foot leader of 6 pound mono. Attach a small treble hook. I lke to use at least a 4 inch shiner. Sometimes smaller bait is better. I set right above weed beds in 5-12 feet of water. I try not to use any extra weight if I can.

Can't wait to get out there to do it again! :)
Just waiting for the hardwater.

I like big bait for walleyes at first ice.  Either BIG bass shiners or even 5-7 inch suckers and then as the season progresses and oxygen levels diminish I will start to downsize my bait accordingly....Never had too much luck with emeralds on walleyes for some reason.  I know alot of guys swear by them.  I catch alot of perch on emeralds though.

At times we hook two minnows behind dorsal fins really gets em kicking and they seem to wiggle better plus it is a meal, about all I can get around here are fatheads.
Even a bad day fishing beats a good day at work.

When using the shiners on your tip up. how far of the bottom or how far under the ice do you usually place your bait?

In my province we are only allowed dead bait so, for walleye we go with 3-4 inch shiners. I like to use a 4-5 foot of mono or fluorocarbon line and eather center punch the shiner or hook it once in the back. I also add a bead for color in red or yellow. I usually fish a foot to foot and a half off the bottom, but this year I will experiment with just a few feet under the ice for the walleye and see how they like it. :)

Have any of you ever tied a smelt for walleye? We all love them for set-line/tip-up pike but you don't hear them mentoned much for walleye. Wonder why?

WW, I've caught big walleye on large sardines when pike fishing but I think only one or two on a smelt.  I usually set two tip-up lines, one with a smelt and the other with a sardine or chub, and they almost always hit the sardine, I'm not sure why but it's interesting. Anyone else have similar results in regards to sardines vs smelt?

I like 4-5 inch shiners for big night time shallow walleyes. Master Angler you catch some big pike with sardines eh? I might just have to give that a try. 8)
