Checking Tip-Ups
« on: Feb 17, 2010, 09:58 PM »
How long do you typically wait without having a flag to check your tip-ups?  I have had a perch on the hook that has not poped the flag in the bait, and also stolen bait once in a while without a flag.

Thanks,

I usually check them every 45 minutes or so.  More often if the weather has them freezing in.

There have been lots of times when I got a flag right after checking my tip up.

I don't know, but maybe it had something to do with lifting the bait?

Hope this helps,

Wiener

A group of us were out last weekend and we checked about every 30-45 minutes. It was quite cold so they were icing pretty quick. Seemed like everytime we got out to check them we got a flag  either during the checking round or right after getting back in the shanty.

I usually check my tip ups every hour or so.

If I notice a heavy build up of ice, i will adjust and check them more frequently.

One thing I do regularly is check the to make sure the flag will release as the spool turns.  Our last pike trip, my son set the tip ups and when i checked them, it turned out 2 out of the 10 we had set would not release the flag.  Wouldn't you know....one of them had a pike on! :o
