Pickup some dacron backing line. TFH sells it and its cheap. Got some of the guys onto it a few years back when I managed the place. Works great and better than the specific product mentioned.

If you're spooling an HT Windlass tippy find some vinyl coated Dacron. I hate the vinyl coated stuff except for my Windlasses. With the spool exposed above the water conventional uncoated line will freeze into an icy unmanageable lump in no time. Wouldn't use the vinyl stuff for anything else due to its inherent stiffness but I do for the wind jobs.

No other kind of coating will save you either, not teflon/PTFE, "waterproofing", whatever. Vinyl is the deal. Woodstock and Mason are two vendors I have used.

Normally the fly line backing suggestion is great, just not for your application.
To fish or not to fish? That's a stupid question!

ya my other windless has the mason type line on it. been great but i got cleaned off at newell last winter by a big ol pike.might be time for something a bit more robust. as for line freezing up ive never had an issue.. usually just set my depth for the day and fish on..
