How Wrong Was I
« on: Jan 31, 2011, 01:13 PM »
Last night my 8 year old and I went smelting with a friend and his 9year old. None of them had ever been smelting before so after we got set up and hung out for a while we caught our first smelt. I explained that it is someting of a tradition to bite the head off the first smelt you catch. My buddie that caught it was hesitant to take a chomp so I did the deed. When our kids caught their first smelts they too did the deed and all was cool.
This AM I find out my buddies wife it BS at me because I bite the head off a smelt as did her son and she finds it simply barbaric. I was only trying to teach them part of what I understand as a long standing traditions for good luck (as I was taught). So the question is HOW WRONG WAS I?? ??? ???

the only thing you were wrong about was not pressuring your friend enough to bite the head off one himself.

I'll let my friend worry about that one.

We're really good friends so I'm sure we'll move beyond it quickly. Just made me feel like I was in the Wrong.

Tell her that was only part of the tradition of "smelting".  The other part is shot gunning a beer or two or three or four  or five until you get it right.

eating a smelt head is one thing.  having the kids tell "mom" is the other.
What happens in the shanty stays in the shanty.  i would say they are not ready for deer camp yet   ;D

Maybe your friend should grow a set! Its not like it was a live chicken. As soon as my boy is old enough he will be sharing in these traditions.

She'll get over it in time........She obviously isn't an outdoors person or otherwise she'd know the traditions! ;)
