How Wrong Was I

Last night my 8 year old and I went smelting with a friend and his 9year old. None of them had ever been smelting before so after we got set up and hung out for a while we caught our first smelt. I explained that it is someting of a tradition to bite the head off the first smelt you catch. My buddie that caught it was hesitant to take a chomp so I did the deed. When our kids caught their first smelts they too did the deed and all was cool.
This AM I find out my buddies wife it BS at me because I bite the head off a smelt as did her son and she finds it simply barbaric. I was only trying to teach them part of what I understand as a long standing traditions for good luck (as I was taught). So the question is HOW WRONG WAS I?? ??? ???

I would just keep telling her you were right until you find a new area to move to. ;D

when out teaching kids maine traditions you should first teach them this phrase. it will save alot of explaining back home.   ;D

HA HA good thing you don't follow my Fathers tradition not only did we have to bite the Head off but we had too SUCK OUT THE GUTS spit them down the hole.I bet she would have really flipped out!!
The only thing I hated about it was trying pick out the scales from my Teeth!! good times good times.. :thumbsup: :thumbsup: :sick:

Tell her that was only part of the tradition of "smelting".  The other part is shot gunning a beer or two or three or four  or five until you get it right.

eating a smelt head is one thing.  having the kids tell "mom" is the other. 
What happens in the shanty stays in the shanty.  i would say they are not ready for deer camp yet   ;D
