I like to use boiled linseed to treat exposed wood that is not painted. The linseed oil does not seal the wood but forms a water resistant barrier.  This barrier is more than skin deep, so surface scratches do not compromise the effectiveness of the linseed oil. The advantage of a linseed oil treatment is that the wood is still allowed to breath.  Any moisture getting past the oil, can and will dry back out.  Just one of many options.
take care,

Being a cabinet maker definitely Huntindave is right oil is the way to go
be it linseed, teak, lemon, marine based etc. will preserve the wood and not seal
will allow proper drying prolong rot and warpage. Allow complete dry time between coats
few coats should do it. Just be sure to soak used rag completely in water cause can combust and cause fire
dispose of properly

I would use a spar varnish for tipups.

if i was going to use spar i would thin it by 50%
a lot of plug builders use it before any hardware is installed on through wired salt water plugs
would be easy to renew annually if you needed to

Tung oil. Penetrates wood grain like nothing else, dries fairly hard but will not chip or scratch, doesn't yellow with age or get "white" when wet and touches up easily once done. Preferred wood treatment for marine environments.

... Mix spar urethaun cut with about 10%  mineral spirits will seal them..pay attention to the end grain. After that I paint with a few coats of gloss or semigloss black rustolium .. the black will absorb the heat and ice will never stick to your tipups.
The only time I learn something is when I'm not talking.
