Title: Protecting your hand drill from the elements
Post by: grubdropper on Nov 12, 2019, 10:40 AM
Just bought a new lithium battery powered hand drill for my hand auger.  If it’s snowing or raining should you have something to cover up you hand drill to protect from moisture?   Maybe some kind of cover?   I never used one out on the ice before and I want to make sure it lasts.   Thanks for anyone’s input.

When not in use, I remove the battery from the drill and put inside my jacket to keep it warm. If snowing really hard, I put the drill inside a hut or cover it up with something.

I use a Pelican medium hard case to carry my drill, battery, charger, side handle and ice anchor bit. If conditions look nasty, I'll take the whole case out on the ice with me, minus the charger to save a little weight.

Similar. I made a couple of sleeves out of thin styrofoam sheets I had to cover the batteries. I'm more about keeping them dry than the cold. If they get wet...🙄

I just use a walmart bag as well. extremely light and can be put in your packet if not used. The only time I cover it, is if its snowing out hard other wise I dont. Dont forget contractors use these drill in all climates year round.

I wonder if a guy could find a random plastic drill case like the old dewalt black plastic suitcase style ones and just cut out a hole on the side to cover your drill while its still attached to your auger? just a thought. Or maybe even a zipper canvas/polyester bag kind of deal that would cover the drill.

I will admit to using a cheap nylon draw string bag...like the ones you put your shoes in.

This is a great idea! I bet we will be seeing these with brands on them in a year or two.

Nothing really. The only “protection” I use is the handle on my Clam Plate that keeps it off the ice. I don’t ice fish in rain heavier than a mist. However, it stays outside 100% when fishing regardless of other weather conditions. It’s been snow covered more times than I can count and in double digit negative temps. Milwaukee makes good tools.

Is it brushless? Brushless drills can operate in the rain just fine.

Most of my issues is the trip on the roadway to my local lake via ATV ..salt/sand ..I use a bungee and a Dollar Store poly Vac bag ..I also considered a auger cover as mine is mounted to a Clam Plate ..but have yet to do so ..while on the ice ..either inside my Jet sled with a storage bag..rod box etc laid across it to protect the drill.

I use the same thing. I bought a nylon drawstring bag for a sleeping bag. It goes over my drill and Clam plate. The auger rides on the front of my ATV and is always getting snow and slush on it.

not for nothing but these things are designed to be used in the harshest of elements if you've ever been on a filthy frigid job site in the middle of january in Minnesota you'll see guys tossing around their high end brushless tools that have been around for years.

Not saying taking care of your tools isn't admirable and prudent but I also don't think you have to baby them a whole lot even on the ice.  my M18 I do nothing and we are going on 4 years now of ice use.  Its used the other 8-9 months for all sorts of other stuff as well.  I don't throw it around but I have no issue letting it set there.

Ditto -  I am one of the guys from Minnesota and fish on the Canada border. No special care needed. I leave the drill and the battery (12 AH) outside in 30 below and have had no issues.

I slip mine in a canvas bag with a hand warmer. Probably don't need to, but it gives me peace of mind.
