The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable,
a perpetual series of occasions for hope.

A totally tight line. No free spooling. I can see a lot of break-offs before you get to it.

Give your son a fish, and he will eat for a day.....teach your son to fish and eventually he'll end up kicking your @ss every time you fish together!!!

balanced tip ups with no spool have been common around here for a long time. They aren't meant to be used as unattended lines, but as the ultimate deadstick right beside you. balanced properly they will mark the lightest bites.

Interesting, different strokes for different folks!  The Burmese around here fish with anything from a Pringles chip can to lowering a stolen shopping cart over the bridge on ropes and using it for a dip net!

This is a great article on the balanced tip-ups.  I do use them from time to time on Simcoe, and it saved my outing once, as all of my other rods froze  quickly in the bitterly cold -35c we had last winter on the lake.  I would use a balanced tipup over this stick because I wouldn't have anywhere to hang it in my shelter.  The balanced tip-up sits close to the hole on the floor (easier on the neck to look down), very sensitive, and easy to handle once a fish is hooked.
Add a day to your life, go fishing.
