Power Pro Braid ?
« on: Jan 01, 2010, 10:00 AM »
Have any of you guys/gals used braided lines for leaders? If so any thoughts, good, bad, otherwise? Was at the tackle shop & had a guy telling me the stuff was real good for Pike fishing.

Theres a ton of other posts on here about this, just search around and you'll see more than enough info.  Bottom line though is braid is garbage as a pike leader, heavy flouro, steel or titanium are your options.

I use braid for pike leaders all the time.

No problems so far.

I have been making pike leader for years out of fireline, powerpro, gorilla braid, spiderwire etc.

I have not had a bite off yet.

I went from steel leaders to braired 50lbs leaders 1st fish and I had a bite off , I was pissed . Then I had another flag and caught a 12lber with no problem. I think it's a crap shoot , I don't know what to think , probably try something different next year....

How is the braid for tangling on ice? Does it happen alot when your're piling it up? I use it on my soft water pike rod and I know that if it is given a chance to get a pile of it on the floor of the boat it can make some serious tangles. Doesn't seem to untangle from itself as easily as mono or flouro.

also gives some nasty cuts if the fish runs w/ the leader in your hand. steel or titainium is the way to go.

40# flourocarbon works very well for pike and musky fishing.
As an added bonus, you catch more fish when using it. IMO
Good flouro is as tough as nails.

Braid frays very easily and is not a good leader material.

I tried powerpro a few seasons back and hated it, not for pike, but in general.

I use powerpro all summer and love it, but at the time it was the worst ice braid I have ever used. I now use suffix braid, and after hearing guys recommend the powepro I will give it a second shot.

i used 30# power pro and it worked very well for me. great knot strength and very sensitive.i switched over to mono though because im targeting trout more and i think the braid is too visible

I would never recommend any kind of plastic for for pike leader material. I know lots of you "never get bit off"; my advice is to go play the lottery 'cause you are some lucky guys/gals.

If I were forced, any kind of superline would be my last choice of plastic and flouro would be my first, with a hard mono a close second. If you want to see what kind of risk you take with superline, get a new razor blade (pike teeth are that sharp) and lay the line over it and see how little pressure it takes to cut it, especially if it slides at all.

20# uncoated steel is my choice. Cheap, reliable, easy to work with and when they make invisible hooks I'll begin to worry about invisible leaders.

Just my opinion based on my experience, user mileage may vary.

Braid is more visible than wire, so why would you want to use it? In murky water, go with thin sevenstrand wire. In clear or lightly stained water, 20 pound fluorocarbon will greatly increase the amount of strikes you get over wire. Pike aren't always wire shy but they CAN be.
