Tip Downs
« on: Dec 29, 2014, 12:17 AM »
I put my short 28 inch ice rod with reel on my tip down and it feels "heavy" at the rod tip, so heavy a fish would feel it easy.  Should I be using a longer rod to balance set-up?  The reels are small spinning reels but not the smallest.  Never used them but seemed to me you would want a balance set-up ???

Any help here is appreciated.

You're exactly right , bullpine, balance is the magic of a tip-down.

It can't be done with a spinning reel, due to the location of center-of-balance change.

What works perfectly is a schooly reel.

Nice BIGFISH .     ;)2

Pallet wood, oak is what I used.   ( Thank you Wally world, ha.)

Will that one stay down, once tripped ?  Or, does it stay balanced, thus giving a slight pull? Not good for the shy ones.

Those with the Schooly reels tip & stay with half a small paper clip hung on the tip for a test. Very sensitive !    :o

Wow, a very Merry Christmas, Eddie, enjoy.     ;)2

Oh, for true, Crappieguy is the man !

He and a few friends made several prototypes, and refined those. Then, they tweaked and tweaked until the precision obtained perfection.

The real beauty is the adjustment that can be simply done as different bait weights are employed. Just a hook, or a lure or live bait, perfect balance.

Well, all crappie are similar but different.

They may like something best in CO, or at a lower elevation like MI or Norway, another bait.     :woot:

So, help us out a bit and fill in your 'location'.     Thankx.    ;)2

It's all coming back now, my short memory, ha.   yup, jeez, shackled with the no live bait law.   Not sure if you looked at those links where a few baits were mentioned. So, my guess is a small red jig with a spike or two.  Knowing where they are and the suspended depth they are lurking helps a lot.
The big lake is frozen over from Sunny Side to Bottle Bay, a good sign.

You can use gulp minnows, not as affective as live but they do work.   Thanks for the kind words on our Tip Downs, I have now come up with a PCV frame that uses the same design, works really well and not worries about them getting wet.

Thanks for showing my Tip Downs.  I now make the frames out of PVC, they never get wet.

If anyone is interested, I do still sell them.   715-379-2376

Those are my tip Downs, I no longer make the frames out of wood, I switched to PVC.  If anyone is interested I still sell them.

A lot of people have copied our design, but no one else adds the safety line to keep from loosing poles.
