You have to punch a ton of holes on this lake.  I have not been here for three years.  But at that time there was 10-12" perch in schools.  Jump from hole to hole once you find them in a area.

I found that the freshwater shrimp worked the best.  Try using a green teardrop.  Find the deepest spot on the lake.

Good luck! I hope there is still a few nice ones left.

Warren,

I have been targeting trout this year with a ton of success.  Bellis Beach is great from 3:30 until after dark.  I have used a flash light to watch my line once it gets dark.  Biggest one this year just over 5lbs.  I have caught a few suckers as well that I thought were heavy trout. 10 years ago I caught perch over 10".  I don't know if they are all gone or not.  The trout are slowing down by the day. My next purchase will be an Underwater Camera.

I am getting frustrated looking for perch.  I have tried Long Lake and only caught a few to throw back in the hole.
It seems like our perch fishery needs another revamp. Mons lake use to be one of my favourite lakes only to find small ones again. Our government has to start stocking more lakes with small perch and Walleye.  There is too much pressure on them.  I only keep enough for a meal.  The rest will go back in the hole.

Pigeon seems to be overrun with large Walleye that I think are foraging on the small Whites.

It is also time to get rid of all Commercial fisherman.  I was at Garner 2 years ago in the spring only to see about 6 nets full of fish skeletons.  It is sad!!!

I have not gone to Hastings this year and have not fished it for 3 years.  One day we caught 20 10"-12" perch only to return the next day to the same spot and get little guys 4"-6" the next day and drilled 40 holes and not 1 keeper.

I sure hope some of the big ones have survived the low levels of the lake and low O2 concentrations.

I have not seen a pike in the lake and think the perch have had winter kill the last few years.

Good luck and Good fishing!

It is sad the way the Perch populations have decreased.

I usually don't fish for trout in the winter.I like to go for the big jacks and Perch in the winter.Summertime i fish mainly walleye and  sometimes Jack...although there is a old man who lives 10 minutes away from me that stocks 3 huge ponds full of beautiful MASSIVE trout. The old man charges 100 bucks a year to fish on his land but i tell u what i have never seen trout this big before....Average is 5lb's(No B.S)Beautiful looking fish. It's on the way to fort saskatchewan,I live in shpk.

I went a drilled some holes last year on Hastings...End of December and i was the only one who had been on the lake besides sleds...Water levels are down and i for one want the best perch lake back....I also liked it because i live so close but maybe one day it will regain it's fine form....I will take a trip out there before the season is done...I'll let u know what i find....But i heard it winter killed 2 years ago so it will be a while before it regains it's fishing.

I still have not heard of anyone trying it.  It had some winter kill 2 years ago.  There was a mess of fish laying on the beach after the thaw.

They did stock it again this year.  Is the government doing any research about stocking our lakes with perch and Walleye?

Don't dump a bunch into a lake only to have no O2 for the fish.

Has anyone been out to Hastings yet.  Are there any fish left or is the water level to low.  Last time I was out was 5 years ago and caught over 100 perch.  10 of them were between 10"-11" and full of eggs.

They stocked this lake with Perch again this year.

Kingfisher,

I am glad there are still some around in Hastings.  Went out to Long lake near Boyle on Sunday and we caught
16 perch between 10-12".

I took us most of the day to find out what to use. My son also saw some bigger on the cam but these guys are pretty smart and hard to entice.

I was there on Sunday with a buddy and our boys. We got skunked but we spoke to two locals that said that we probably weren't in the best of locations on the ice. We drove on but the snow was quite slushy in spots. There was easily 20+ inches of ice though. Definitely going to try it again.
