First ice
« on: Dec 01, 2021, 11:27 AM »
Made a trip yesterday scouting for some safe ice, and found it. Returned this morning, and the rainbows were hungry. Hit 5 fish in about a hr and a half. This season I am trying to use all artificial baits, with the exception of live worms. Today’s success was all on small plastics, over 15ft of water jigged 2-5 feet below the ice. Ice I found was 3in across from all the holes I made. I only went out with a jigging rod and my jawjacker. Three jigging and two off the jawjacker. I doubled up at one point. Jigging rod had a nice jolt, and at the same time the jacker went off and was peeling off some line, both were nice looking. Seems to be a great start to a new season. Stay safe out there guys and ladies!!

That first trip is always nice. Bonus if a few fish were caught.

Very nice! Great start to the season, for sure!
Before you said what you were using, I was going to ask if you're the reason one bait place told me they sold the last of their live bait this morning lol.

Other than asking your GPS coordinates (pm sent) what exactly are you using for plastics? If I can't find little fishies by this weekend, I'll need to try something else. I mean, worm looking things like the summer bass guys use (I think I have some that someone gave me), or should I be looking for some other shaped/sized thing?Maybe I could cut one of those in half or a third?  I suppose I'll still be able to find dillies somewhere, either way.

Sorry (kinda) for the hijack, but I was coming to the site to ask bait advice anyway.

Thinkin 'bout cusk on the grill......

Was using small crappie tubes, I think mizmo was the brand. I also have alot of clam plastics, and euro tackle plastics. I haven’t used many of the euro tackle, but for clam I like the maki, and the spiki. Also the gulp smelt in the liquid have done okay, and the trout magnet kit. I think the key to the plastics is finding the right weight jig to the right weight plastic to give it a nice erratic movement, but still glide around on the downfall. Not just a straight drop down, just my experience

Thank you for the tips! I'll do a bit of looking around online. I don't expect to be anywhere near a real store before this weekend, but I'll consider it for the future. In the case of driving by a place by chance and having nothing but frozen solid bait that I forgot last weekend....lol

And thanks for the GPS coordinates! I'll just borrow your stuff this weekend when I show up at your spot. With my kid. Who really wants to catch a wallhanger.
