I use a improved clinch aswell. However, if you are doing straight onto braid you need to do a few granny loops to secure it from slipping. That's always worked for me

I am using the improved clinch.  When I was using braided line and a swivel, no leader,  I never lost a jig.
I switch to using  flurocarbon 10lb. line and have lost 2 jigs.  I am not sure if the knot is coming undone
or if the line is breaking at the eye of the hook.  Perhaps I should use 14 lb. flurocarbon line.

Thoughts?

Ya, I bet the 10 pound floro is just wearin out as the day progresses. Even fishjng walley with a lighter line then you hit a pike, similar wear happens and you usually got to re tie. Either up the size I.e 14 pounds, or make sure to check the strength of your knot after every fish. That's my best guesses anyways

What size treble hook for the stinger?

I was just using the packs you can get at Canadian tire. I think it depends on ur bait. If its wide at the point where it meets the treble, then use a bigger one. I was using minnows ad the treble met right at the peduncle of the caudal fin so I used a small treble not to interfere too much with the presentation of the minnow

Eztiaan, when you use your lx7 for lakers what screen do you use more ,the flasher or the sonar or both at the same time.
I have been using my Eagle sonar off the boat and sometimes it will pickup my hook and some times not.

I was using the both the  flasher display( so you can see entire water column) and also the vertical zoom ( with a zoom window of 20 ft. This way you could see more detail for the bottom twenty feet of the water column) at the same time. I found that to be the best. I focused on bottom twenty feet mostly, but sometimes you can make them chase for much further, that is when the flasher display comes in handy.i had some follow and hit just 10 ft under the ice. If they are following bait just keep really until either they stop or thy hit. Hope this helps.

Around 18 - 20 cm. of snow over night.  We will try to get to C.L. tomorrow.
For now I'll find the shovel and get to work.

Friday:  Had a good day catching 9 trout and many bites.  The Marcum LX7 makes a big difference.  Did get some interference from a Marcum LX 5 fishing near by.
The snow covering the ice heaves was a bit scarey but we got to our spot without incident.  Monday I'll take my grand son, 8 yrs., out for his first try for a Laker.

Good news:   Cold Lake was sunny and warm.

Bad news:  WE caught 3 fish between 6 of us,  2 over 65 cm.

Good news:  I caught 2 of the fish.

Cold Lake was a blast this year.  I made many new fishing friends and learned a few new techniques.

Have a great summer.

Well August is at an end.  I thought I would read over the posts of last winter.  Sure brings back some good memories.

I've started to gather some new gear for Lake trout fishing:  two Abu Garcia Ambassadeur reels (5500 & 5501) from Ebay, some hand crafted jigs, and my pride, a custom made 42" Drifter Stix rod.  I need to get a 10" auger for my Jiffy and a Striker Ice Jacket and bibs.  I dug the LX-7 out and charged the battery up.

At least 4 months to go but I am getting ready  .....    :icefish:

Has anyone tried "Little Cleo" lure  on Cold Lake for winter trout?
