You have to go to the north end and access the lake by the pit. I haven't been up there but there is smaller vehicles on the lake so the access must be ok?

Hi all. New to the site and just started fishing blackstrap again, after a few years of being absent. Followed alot of the posts on here and have gone out a few times in the past few weeks. Been having a blast slaying a ton of perch by the boat launches(hill), but have yet to hook onto any walleye. Do I need to find a different spot for walleye, or will they eventually show up around there?

Move, punch hole, fish, repeat.  You will run into them sooner or later.  ;)  this morning met up with a buddy looking to get into some more walleye action. Got out to our spot set up and started marking not long after. Had another great morning catching and missing walleyes. a few pike and a couple perch. Fairly steady action for 6 hours. A lot more traffic on the ice people driving everywhere.

Nice pictures guys.  Glad to see other people finally starting to catch.  Rip and I were getting to feel guilty.

The fish are out there, just have to move around.  But I think the advantage Rip and I have is that we can go out every 2nd day (or everyday like Rip.....lol), were as some people are stuck to just one day on the weekend (which makes it hard).  I have taken 5 days off without going out, for Xmas and company and it is driving me crazy.  And it's going to be another couple days before I can get out.

Thanx. I love the feedback and appreciate the tips. I haven’t fished blackstrap for many years. There’s a lot of people that won’t tell you the time let alone share any info. I am fortunate to be able to go out a couple times a week now that the kids are grown. So thanx again!

Cheers

I agree with Rip. I used to maintain that successful ice fishermen were either fully retired or had 90% of their professional ambition surgically removed. It is very nice just to have the time to try here and there using this and that. When I was working, I always thought Blackstrap had been fished out, or winter killed, or the fish wouldn't bite because they had been too pressured. These excuses seem to be little more than popular mythologies.

Today I thought, why not go see if the walleye were biting late afternoon on the NE side? As luck would have it, they were. 11 FOW.

This season so far, I found walleye at 10 to 15 feet of water, either in the morning till noon or around sunset. There is a few perch and pike in the mix.

Now I know this site gives license for a little bragging, and on occasion a touch of sentimentality. I'm going to push the envelope with a little of both.....

My wife responded to the question, "what do you want to do for New Year's eve?" with the answer, "why don't we go ice fishing in the evening?"

I really love that woman.

Wow Speck.....you must of thought you died and went to heaven.  I couldn't even talk a trade with you, as I wouldn't be able to offer you a two for one deal, so that means it would have to be one for one, and I would have to thrown in more cash then I have to make it a viable trade for you.

Good luck out there.....and remember when the two of you are in the pop up........you are there to fish.

jpicks and I did really well today. Brutal cold day to be out and the shack was a real blessing. We pretty much had action non-stop all day. We caught a number of good sized football perch, including the largest Perch I think I have personally seen. I’m sure Jon will post a picture of it shortly. We also caught a couple of decent Pike, including one around 30”.  The Walleye’s were cruising around most of the day, but didn’t seem too interested in biting. All in all very decent day on the Strap.

Happy New Year Everyone!

Took a father son team that were new to ice fishing out this am and braved the temps and the wind. Those two and my 7 year old son were able to ice 35 perch. Fairly steady action most of the morning and quit at 2. South end 24 fow. A couple pike cruising as well but weren’t  interested.

Shawno was spot on. It was a miserable day out on the strap, and despite a few hiccups to start the day (auger that wasn't happy,  and a drill that broke for my anchor pilot holes),  we managed to put more than our fair share of fish topside.  Iced a couple dozen perch and 2 pike.  Had another pike stare down my hook for literally 15 minutes, and also saw a few decent walleye cruise by but weren't interested.   Kept 3 perch for the pan and snapped a nice picture of Shawno's quality fish.

Nice pike!, I myself haven't seen any yet this year, maybe that's why the perch have been plentiful. jpicks were you fishing the north or south end?

New Year's Eve fishing was a little slow on the the south end. A half dozen perch were caught ranging in size from "wow" to "seriously?" A large pike made short work of my light perch gear, and what was probably a decent walleye broke my wife's heart halfway up to the surface.
Lots of lookers and hit and run artists.

Happy New Year to all.
